Detailed information

Product detailed description

BKK Fangs-62 UA 1/0 is the first aught size in the Fangs-62 range and sits practically between size #1 and the larger 2/0. It is intended for situations where you need a wider hook gape and more secure contact with the fish than the numbered sizes provide, but do not want to burden the lure with an unnecessarily heavy 3X or 4X treble. Size 1/0 is a sensible choice for large hardbaits, jerkbaits, stickbaits, topwater lures, larger spoons and metal lures, as well as large articulated pike streamers.

The 2X designation describes the wire and strength class. Fangs-62 is not the lightest fine-wire treble, but neither is it a heavy-duty model designed for extreme saltwater fishing. It is a medium-duty construction: stronger than delicate 1X hooks, yet lighter and less intrusive than the 3X Fangs-63 or 4X Raptor and Viper ranges. This balance matters when replacing a factory-fitted treble. The hook needs to withstand the expected load without unnecessarily altering the lure's centre of gravity, sink rate or action.

The geometry is based on the traditional O'Shaughnessy bend. BKK combines it with a forged construction and needle-sharp barbed points. Forging increases the strength of the heavily loaded section of the hook, while the long, gradually tapered points promote initial penetration. With any treble hook, however, the complete system determines the result: point sharpness, correct hook size, split-ring strength, drag setting and the angle at which the fish strikes the lure all play a part.

The hook is made from BKK-81WV high-carbon steel and protected by an Ultra-Antirust (UA) coating. This finish was developed with an emphasis on corrosion resistance in saltwater, making Fangs-62 well suited to saltwater lure fishing and lighter inshore applications. It is equally useful in freshwater for pike, zander and other predators. A corrosion-resistant coating does not make the hook maintenance-free: after fishing in saltwater, rinse the hooks with fresh water, allow them to dry completely and inspect the finish for damage.

Size 1/0 is particularly useful where a lure needs a larger hook but its freedom of movement still matters. On large jerkbaits and hardbaits it provides a wider effective gape. On stickbaits and topwater lures it can improve the chance of finding a secure hold when a fish attacks from the side or below. It can also be used on spoons and lighter metal lures, provided that the lure's design can carry a 1/0 treble without losing its natural fall or repeatedly fouling against the body.

SAF recommendation for lighter pilkers and compact metal jigs: Fangs-62 UA can also be used as a replacement treble on lighter metal lures when the lure size, expected fish and fishing style are appropriate for a 2X hook. Its advantages are the corrosion-resistant finish and lower weight compared with genuinely heavy-duty saltwater trebles. An excessively heavy hook can restrict the flutter and lateral movement of a smaller pilker, while an undersized hook may not provide sufficient gape. The correct fit should therefore be judged against the lure body itself, not from lure weight alone.

SAF field tip — large pike and saltwater streamers: size 1/0 works particularly well on tied lures, stinger rigs and large streamers dressed with long fibres. During slower retrieves, a relatively light treble can ride more horizontally in line with the fly and flow with the fibres instead of hanging beneath the pattern like a heavy sinker. Hair, fur and synthetic materials are then free to move more naturally, and the hook interferes less with the streamer's horizontal profile. Based on SAF's physical comparison, size 1/0 is best suited to larger pike or saltwater streamers measuring approximately 25 cm. For a pike streamer around 20 cm, size #1 is generally the better choice. This is an approximate guide because material volume, stinger position, lure buoyancy and the required hook gape also matter.

When replacing the original treble, compare more than the number stamped on the packet. Look at the overall height, gape width, shank length and weight. Hook sizing is not standardised between manufacturers. Two hooks carrying the same size designation can differ in geometry and mass. On a floating or precisely balanced hardbait, a heavier hook can alter buoyancy; on a slow-sinking lure it can change the sink rate; and on a spoon or pilker it can affect the character of the fall. The safest approach is to place the replacement beside the original hook and then test the lure's action in the water.

The differences between neighbouring sizes are practical. #1 is the better option when you want a smaller hook profile and less weight on the lure; based on SAF's physical comparison, it is also a good match for pike streamers around 20 cm. 1/0 adds gape and is the main working size for larger pike or saltwater streamers around 25 cm and appropriately sized large hardbaits. Choose 2/0 when the lure body is more substantial and a 1/0 may not open sufficiently around it. Moving up in size is not automatically safer: an oversized treble can catch on the lure body, restrict its movement or tangle with a second hook.

Fangs-62 UA 1/0 is not intended to replace heavy-duty trebles for the largest GT, tuna or extreme popping applications. If maximum resistance to opening is the priority and hook weight does not compromise lure action, a stronger Fangs-63, Raptor or Viper model may be more appropriate depending on the technique. Fangs-62 has a different role: to provide a reliable 2X treble with strong corrosion protection and no unnecessary weight penalty.

How to choose a BKK Fangs-62 UA size

The table is an approximate map of the complete range. It is not a fixed conversion between lure length and hook size. Before making the final choice, always check the physical proportions of the lure, the original hook, the split-ring size and the hook's freedom of movement.

Size Pack quantity Position in the range Typical lures and applications When to consider this size
#16 8 pcs Smallest size in the range Micro lures, very small hardbaits and delicate metal lures When the smallest possible hook and minimal effect on lure action are the priorities
#14 8 pcs Very fine size Tiny minnows, crankbaits and small spinners or spoons When #16 appears too small but the lure still requires lightweight hardware
#12 8 pcs Small all-round size Small hardbaits, crankbaits, spoons and compact metal lures For small lures that can carry a 2X hook without losing action
#10 8 pcs Light working size Smaller minnows, crankbaits, spoons and lighter metal lures When you need more gape than #12 while still keeping weight down
#8 8 pcs Small-to-medium all-rounder Hardbaits, crankbaits, smaller jerkbaits, spoons and metal lures For common smaller lures where finer sizes do not provide enough gape
#6 8 pcs Medium working size Medium hardbaits, spoons, smaller topwater lures and streamers When you need a middle ground between the finesse of #8 and the wider working gape of #5 or #4
#5 8 pcs Intermediate size for fine adjustment Medium hardbaits, spoons, metal lures and small-to-medium streamers When #6 is too small but #4 already changes the balance or catches the lure body
#4 8 pcs Medium all-round size Medium-to-large hardbaits, jerkbaits, spoons, metal lures and streamers For lures that need a clearly wider gape without moving into the largest hook sizes
#3 7 pcs Larger intermediate size Larger hardbaits, jerkbaits, topwater lures, metal lures and stinger rigs When #4 does not offer enough gape and #2 already appears too prominent
#2 7 pcs Larger working size Larger jerkbaits, spoons, lighter pilkers, large streamers and stinger rigs For larger lures where gape matters more than the smallest possible hook profile
#1 6 pcs Largest numbered size Large hardbaits, jerkbaits, topwater lures, metal lures and pike streamers around 20 cm When you need a large hook but 1/0 may add unnecessary weight to the lure or streamer
1/0 6 pcs Main large all-round size Large jerkbaits, stickbaits, topwater lures, metal lures and larger pike or saltwater streamers around 25 cm When #1 does not provide enough gape but you still want the lighter character of the 2X range
2/0 6 pcs Very large size Bulky hardbaits, topwater lures, large metal lures and substantial streamers When the lure body requires a wider gape than 1/0 provides
3/0 5 pcs Largest size in the range The largest lures, large topwater lures, hardbaits and bulky stinger rigs When maximum gape within the 2X range is the priority; not as a substitute for 3X or 4X heavy-duty hooks

This variant contains 6 treble hooks in size 1/0. Before first use, check the sharpness of all three points and repeat the inspection after any contact with rocks, a metal boat hull or another hard obstacle. Replace a dulled or mechanically damaged hook; an apparently intact finish does not necessarily mean that the points have retained their sharpness.

BKK Fangs-62 UA 1/0 is intended for anglers looking for a large, sharp and corrosion-protected treble with a sensible weight. Its main strength is not extreme bulk, but a balanced combination of 2X construction, a wide working gape, a forged body and broad use ranging from large hardbaits and lighter metal lures to pike streamers.

Frequently asked questions — BKK Fangs-62 UA 1/0

Which lures suit size 1/0?

Size 1/0 is a sensible choice for large hardbaits, jerkbaits, stickbaits, topwater lures, larger spoons and metal lures, as well as large articulated pike streamers. Always check that the hook does not restrict the lure's action or repeatedly catch on its body.

What is the difference between sizes #1, 1/0 and 2/0?

#1 is the smaller and lighter option. 1/0 provides a wider gape and is a versatile choice for large lures. 2/0 suits bulkier lure bodies around which a 1/0 may not leave sufficient clearance. Hook sizing is not standardised between manufacturers, so always compare the replacement directly with the original hook.

Is Fangs-62 UA 1/0 suitable for pike streamers?

Yes. Based on SAF's physical comparison and practical experience, size 1/0 is best suited to larger pike or saltwater streamers measuring approximately 25 cm; for a pike streamer around 20 cm, size #1 is generally the better choice. Its favourable strength-to-weight balance allows the hook to ride more in line with the fibres during a slow retrieve instead of pulling the tail of the fly straight down. Material volume, stinger position and the buoyancy of the individual pattern must also be considered.

Can I use this treble hook in saltwater?

Yes. The Ultra-Antirust finish is designed to provide increased corrosion resistance in saltwater. After fishing, rinse the hook with fresh water, allow it to dry completely and inspect both the points and the coating for damage before using it again.

Is size 1/0 also suitable for pilkers?

It can be suitable for lighter pilkers and compact metal jigs when the lure size, target fish and fishing method are appropriate for a 2X hook. This is not an automatic recommendation based on lure weight. The treble must not unnecessarily suppress the lure's fall, catch on its body or become the weakest part of the complete rig.

Can a replacement treble change the action of a hardbait or another lure?

Yes. Differences in weight, shank length and gape affect the centre of gravity, buoyancy and sink rate. On carefully balanced lures, compare the new hook with the original and test the lure's action in the water after fitting it.

When should I choose a stronger treble than Fangs-62?

Choose a stronger 3X or 4X model for heavy-duty fishing for very large fish, extreme popping or situations where resistance to opening matters more than hook weight and the finesse of the lure's action. Fangs-62 is a versatile 2X range, not a hook for extreme fishing for large GT and tuna.
