Detailed information

Product detailed description

SPRO IRIS Shocktail 30 cm – Yellow Steel is our recommended starting size in this range for halibut and cod fishing in Norway. It combines an elongated fish profile with a lively tail, while the unrigged soft lure weighs just 60 g. Rigging it with a screw-in jig head lets you adjust the weight to the drift and the depth you want to fish without changing the size of your lure.

The 30 cm version offers a substantial mouthful with less weight and water resistance than the 40 cm model. It is a practical starting point for fishing drop-offs, slopes and the water above the seabed when you do not need the largest profile in the range. Its smaller body makes the rig easier to work during longer sessions, although the jig head remains the main factor determining the overall weight.

SAF recommended setup for the 30 cm version – Pair the Shocktail with a SAF Screw Head Natural 150–500 g and a Savage Gear Big Fish Stinger 7/0 / 100 kg. We recommend this combination based on our experience fishing for halibut and cod in Norway. This product includes one unrigged soft lure; the jig head and stinger are sold separately.

How the Shocktail works and when to choose Yellow Steel

The fish-shaped body, large 3D IRIS eyes and long, curved tail combine a defined silhouette with a flowing swimming action. The pectoral fins help stabilise the body, while water movement activates the soft tail during the retrieve. Adjusting your retrieve speed or the length of each lift changes the intensity of the action. For a straight swimming action, the jig head must sit in line with the body, and the stinger must not stretch the lure or restrict its tail.

Yellow Steel combines a yellow body with a more orange underside and darker markings across the back. It offers a brighter alternative to natural baitfish patterns when you want to change the visual presentation. Try it with the same head weight and a similar retrieve to your previous colour. If the rig is not staying in the zone where fish are feeding, adjust the weight or presentation first; changing colour alone will not solve that problem.

How much does the Shocktail weigh with a SAF Screw Head?

The stated 60 g is the weight of the unrigged 30 cm soft lure. The table adds the lure and jig head weights and lets you compare both sizes. The bold figures apply to this 30 cm version.

SAF Screw Head Natural Shocktail 30 cm / 60 g – this product Shocktail 40 cm / 140 g
150 g 210 g 290 g
200 g 260 g 340 g
300 g 360 g 440 g
400 g 460 g 540 g
500 g 560 g 640 g

The weights in the table exclude the stinger and any additional connecting components. The finished rig will therefore be slightly heavier. These are approximate totals based on the stated component weights: for example, a 30 cm Shocktail with a 200 g head weighs approximately 260 g before adding the stinger.

Choose the head weight according to depth, current, drift speed and the water resistance of the complete rig. Use enough weight to maintain controlled presentation in your target zone. If the current sweeps the lure away, a large bow develops in the line and you lose contact, switch to a heavier head. In calmer conditions, you can reduce the weight. The head weight you need may therefore change throughout the day, even at the same depth.

Rigging with a screw-in jig head and a 7/0 stinger

Position the tip of the screw in the centre of the lure’s nose and screw the head in straight, keeping it aligned with the body. Attach the recommended Big Fish Stinger 7/0 to the designated attachment eye on the head and position it along the body. The screw-in head holds the soft lure and provides the weight, while the stinger hook provides the hook-up. The stinger must not bend the body, and the hook needs enough clearance to take hold.

Before lowering the rig into deeper water, check its action beside the boat. The Shocktail should not roll or spin because of misaligned rigging. After a bite or contact with rocks, inspect the area around the screw, the hook and the stinger material. Replace damaged components before fishing the rig again.

Working the lure for halibut and cod

During a drift, lower the lure under control, establish the position of the seabed and then work it above the bottom. Start with smooth lifts, slow winding and short pauses while maintaining contact. The tail works as the lure moves through the water, so there is no need for constant sharp rod movements. Adjust the pace gradually and watch how the fish respond.

When targeting cod, also explore the water above a drop-off or a shoal of baitfish. If bites come higher in the water column, you do not need to return to the seabed after every retrieve. For halibut, use a steady, controlled presentation and stay alert as the lure approaches the boat.

When to move from 30 to 40 cm – Choose the larger Shocktail when you want to present a bulkier baitfish profile and a more substantial silhouette. With the same head, the 40 cm soft lure adds 80 g, and we recommend a 9/0 stinger for that version. If you simply need better control of your fishing depth, first adjust the head weight on the 30 cm model; change lure size when you want to change the size of the mouthful.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is included?
One SPRO IRIS Shocktail 30 cm soft lure in Yellow Steel. The screw-in jig head and stinger are not included.

Which stinger do you recommend for the 30 cm version?
The Savage Gear Big Fish Stinger 7/0 / 100 kg, paired with a SAF Screw Head Natural. For the larger 40 cm Shocktail, we recommend the 9/0 version.

Is 30 cm a suitable size for halibut?
Yes. Rigged with a screw-in jig head and the appropriate stinger, it is a suitable option for targeting halibut. Match the lure size to the available prey and the activity of the fish.

How much does the lure weigh with a 300 g head?
Approximately 360 g before adding the stinger and connecting components: a 60 g soft lure plus a 300 g screw-in jig head.

Should I choose the 40 cm version for deeper water?
Not automatically. A heavier head on the 30 cm lure may provide the control you need. Choose the 40 cm version primarily when you want a larger profile.

What should I change if the fish are not responding?
First check your fishing depth and make sure the rig swims straight. Then change the retrieve speed, distance above the seabed or colour one at a time, so you can identify what makes a difference.
