Detailed information

Product detailed description

SPRO IRIS Shocktail 40 cm – Yellow Steel is a large soft lure for presenting a substantial mouthful to halibut and big cod in Norway. The unrigged 40 cm lure weighs 140 g, and adding a screw-in jig head creates a rig with a considerably larger profile than the 30 cm version. We recommend this size when you want to work a chosen area with a bulky baitfish silhouette.

Choose the 40 cm version primarily for the size of the presentation. Its larger body also creates more water resistance and puts more load on the rod during the retrieve. The same head weight may therefore provide different levels of control on the 30 cm and 40 cm lures. What matters is how the complete rig behaves in the actual current and drift; a length of 40 cm does not determine its fishing depth.

SAF recommended setup for the 40 cm version – Pair this size with a SAF Screw Head Natural 150–500 g and a Savage Gear Big Fish Stinger 9/0 / 100 kg. This is our recommended saltwater combination for targeting halibut and cod. This product includes one unrigged soft lure; the screw-in jig head and stinger are sold separately.

The Shocktail combines a fish-shaped profile, large 3D IRIS eyes and a long, curved tail with a flowing swimming action. The pectoral fins help stabilise the body, while water movement activates the soft tail. Straight rigging is particularly important with a lure of this length: a misaligned head or an overtight stinger can affect its action and cause unwanted rolling or spinning.

Yellow Steel adds a yellow body, a more orange underside and darker markings across the back to the substantial profile. It offers an alternative to natural baitfish patterns when you want to try a different visual presentation while keeping the same retrieve. Compare colours in the same fishing zone; a brighter colour does not replace suitable weighting and control of the lure.

The stated 140 g refers to the soft lure alone. When choosing your rod and the rest of your tackle, also account for the jig head and rigging components. The table shows the combined lure and head weights for both sizes; the bold figures apply to this 40 cm version.

SAF Screw Head Natural Shocktail 30 cm / 60 g Shocktail 40 cm / 140 g – this product
150 g 210 g 290 g
200 g 260 g 340 g
300 g 360 g 440 g
400 g 460 g 540 g
500 g 560 g 640 g

The table excludes the stinger and any additional connecting components. The finished rig will therefore be slightly heavier. These are approximate totals based on the stated component weights: a 40 cm Shocktail with a 300 g head weighs approximately 440 g, while a 500 g head brings the total to 640 g before adding the stinger.

Take the weight of the complete rig into account when choosing your rod. With a 400–500 g head, you are already working a heavy setup, and the large body adds further resistance during each lift. Choose a head weight that allows controlled presentation in the conditions. If the required weight or resistance is too much for your tackle, consider the 30 cm version and check its action and your contact with the lure again.

The SAF Screw Head Natural lets you adjust the weight without changing the length of the lure. Lighter heads are useful when the current and drift allow you to maintain contact; heavier heads help with the descent and control in more demanding conditions. The weight you need depends on the conditions, not just the depth. Watch the angle of your line, the way the rig sinks and your ability to keep it in the target zone.

Position the screw in the centre of the lure’s nose and screw the head in along the body’s centreline. For the 40 cm version, we recommend the Savage Gear Big Fish Stinger 9/0 / 100 kg. Attach it to the designated eye on the head and position it along the body without stretching the soft lure or allowing the hook or stinger material to interfere with the tail. In this setup, the screw holds the lure body and the stinger hook provides the hook-up.

Draw the completed rig through the water beside the boat before lowering it. Check that it swims straight, the tail moves freely and the hook is correctly positioned. After contact with a fish or the seabed, inspect the screw, stinger and connecting components. The 100 kg rating applies to the stinger; the strength of the complete setup also depends on the leader, knots and other components.

Start with a controlled descent and a smooth presentation in the zone where you expect fish. Once you have established the position of the seabed, lift the lure above it and alternate longer, steady lifts with slow winding and short pauses while maintaining contact. The large body does not require constant sharp rod movements; first see how it works at a gentle pace in the current drift.

When targeting halibut, use the substantial profile to work drop-offs and slopes. For cod, also explore the water above shoals of baitfish or the depth where you are getting bites. If fish follow the lure without taking it, adjust the pace or offer the smaller 30 cm version. Base changes in lure size on the response of the fish, not simply on the depth.

When to choose 40 cm and when to choose 30 cm – The 40 cm version presents a considerably larger mouthful; the 30 cm version offers less water resistance and a body that is 80 g lighter. With the same 200 g head, that means approximately 340 g versus 260 g before adding the stingers. We recommend a 7/0 stinger for the 30 cm version and a 9/0 stinger for this 40 cm model.

Frequently asked questions

Does the pack contain a fully rigged lure?
No. It contains one IRIS Shocktail 40 cm soft lure in Yellow Steel. The SAF Screw Head Natural and recommended 9/0 stinger are sold separately.

When should I choose 40 cm instead of 30 cm?
When you want to present a substantially larger baitfish profile and your tackle can handle the weight and water resistance of the rig. Choose 30 cm for a smaller mouthful and easier handling.

Which stinger do you recommend for the 40 cm version?
The Savage Gear Big Fish Stinger 9/0 / 100 kg. We recommend the smaller 7/0 stinger for the 30 cm Shocktail.

How much does the Shocktail weigh with a 300 g or 500 g head?
Approximately 440 g with a 300 g head or 640 g with a 500 g head. In both cases, add the weight of the stinger and connecting components.

Is the 40 cm version automatically better for deep water?
No. Its larger body creates more resistance, and maintaining your target depth depends on the complete rig and the conditions. A 30 cm lure with a suitable head can sometimes be easier to control.

Do I need to jig this large lure aggressively?
Start with smooth lifts and slow winding while maintaining contact. Adjust the intensity to the lure’s action, the drift and the response of the fish; sharp, aggressive movements are not essential.
