Product detailed description
BKK Fangs-63 UA 3/0 is the largest size in this versatile 3X range. It is intended for the biggest hardbaits, topwater lures and heavy saltwater rigging that requires maximum working gape within the Fangs-63 family. Its role begins where size 2/0 is shielded by a wide lure body or does not provide enough clearance for a clean hook-up.
With size 3/0, a physical check is essential. Compare the overall height, gape, shank length, wire diameter, eye and weight with the original rigging. The hook must swing freely on the split ring and its points must project clear of the lure body. On a hardbait fitted with multiple hooks, also check the distance between the trebles during casting and an aggressive retrieve.
The 3X designation describes the wire and strength class of the construction. It is not an exact load rating in kilograms and does not mean that the hook is three times stronger than another model. Fangs-63 is a more robust alternative to the 2X Fangs-62 range, but the actual strength of the complete setup also depends on the split ring, leader, knot, drag setting and the way the fish is played.
The geometry is based on the traditional O’Shaughnessy bend. BKK combines it with a forged shank, regular eye and three needle-sharp barbed points. The shank length is designed for different hardbaits, including topwaters, minnows and crankbaits. Before use, check that the eye moves freely on the split ring.
BKK uses its proprietary BKK-81WV high-carbon steel. The Ultra-Antirust (UA) coating increases corrosion resistance and gives Fangs-63 a primarily saltwater role, while the hook can also be used in freshwater. After saltwater fishing, rinse the hook with fresh water, allow it to dry completely and inspect the points, eye and coating.
BKK explicitly recommends storing Ultra-Antirust hooks separately from lead items. Do not leave them in direct contact with pilkers, sinkers or other lead components in the tackle box. Replace any blunt, bent or mechanically damaged point; an intact-looking coating alone does not confirm that the point remains sharp.
On the largest topwater lures and hardbaits, size 3/0 provides clearance around a bulky body that a smaller hook may lack. At the same time, it has a greater effect on the lure’s at-rest position, centre of gravity and drag. On a popper, monitor its position on the surface and the way the cup works; on a large stickbait, check stability and response to twitching.
In heavy saltwater rigging, size 3/0 can be used on robust lures for shore and rock lure fishing when it matches the original hook. Neither target species nor lure weight alone determines the correct size. The entire system matters: lure, split ring, leader, drag setting, rod and the way the fish is played.
Fangs-63 3/0 is the heaviest size in the range and creates the most drag. It can alter buoyancy, sink rate, centre of gravity and the rhythm of the lure’s movement. Test the lure in the water before fishing and confirm that the benefits of greater working gape and the 3X construction outweigh any loss of the intended action.
In the same nominal size, Fangs-62 UA 3/0 is the lighter 2X option. Fangs-63 UA 3/0 adds the extra strength and more robust profile of a 3X construction but also places more weight on the lure. The choice is not about one model being universally better; it depends on whether the specific lure needs lower weight or additional strength.
Sting-32 MT is not available in size 3/0, and its light freshwater role is far removed from this application. At 3/0, compare primarily the 2X Fangs-62 with the 3X Fangs-63. If the expected load exceeds the all-round role of Fangs-63, choose a specialised heavy-duty model for the specific fishing method.
Size 2/0 is the less bulky working option for large bigbaits and topwater lures. Size 3/0 provides the maximum gape available in the Fangs-63 range and makes sense only when the proportions of the lure genuinely require it. A larger size number is not automatically the safer choice.
Fangs-63 UA 3/0 is not automatically a direct replacement for every treble hook carrying the same size designation. Hook sizing is not dimensionally standardised between manufacturers or construction ranges. Compare the overall height, working gape, shank length, wire diameter, eye and weight, then test the lure’s actual behaviour in the water.
The BKK Fangs-63 UA comparison table shows the practical role of all eight sizes and explains when the stronger 3X construction makes sense compared with the lighter 2X Fangs-62 UA. The specific dimensions and weights in the table are verified examples of recommended rigging, not a universal conversion chart for every lure.
| Size | Pack | Position in the range | Typical lures and applications | When to choose Fangs-63 instead of Fangs-62 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #8 | 8 pcs | Smallest 3X size in the range | Compact hardbaits and sinking stickbaits; verified examples: 60 mm / 7–9 g | When the small lure can genuinely carry the more robust 3X rigging and Fangs-62 #8 does not provide the required strength reserve |
| #6 | 8 pcs | Small all-round inshore size | Minnows, stickbaits and smaller swimming poppers; verified examples: 65–125 mm / 15–31 g | When more working gape than #8 is required, but #4 could unnecessarily affect the lure’s action or buoyancy |
| #4 | 8 pcs | Compact working 3X size | Stickbaits, smaller topwaters and compact metal lures; verified stickbait examples: 85 mm / 24–28 g | When Fangs-62 #4 preserves the lure’s action, but the expected load calls for a greater 3X strength reserve |
| #2 | 7 pcs | Medium working 3X size | Poppers and sinking stickbaits around 10–12 cm; verified examples: 105 mm / 25–40 g | When #4 does not provide enough gape or reserve, but #1 would add unnecessary weight to the lure |
| #1 | 7 pcs | Power-oriented size for medium topwaters | Stickbaits and poppers; verified examples: 130–140 mm / 30–55 g | When Fangs-62 #1 does not provide the required reserve and the lure can carry the heavier 3X treble without losing its intended action |
| 1/0 | 6 pcs | Large all-round 3X size | Larger floating and sinking stickbaits and topwaters; verified examples: 140 mm / 43–55 g | When #1 does not provide enough gape, but the lure body and buoyancy do not yet require 2/0 |
| 2/0 | 6 pcs | Large working 3X size | Bigbaits, glidebaits, large stickbaits, topwaters and robust metal lures | When 1/0 does not provide enough clearance around a wider body; always compare the actual dimensions with the original rigging |
| 3/0 | 5 pcs | Largest size in the range | The largest hardbaits and topwaters, plus heavy saltwater rigging that can carry a 3X profile | For maximum working gape within Fangs-63; not automatically as a replacement for a specialised heavy-duty treble hook |
This version contains 5 treble hooks in size 3/0. SAF does not include the exact weight of one hook in the Product Parameters without its own physical weighing. Before first use, check all three points and repeat the inspection after contact with rock, metal or another hard obstruction.
For a more detailed look at size, working gape and the effect of hook weight on lure action, also see the BKK Fangs-62 UA size guide. The article provides a lighter 2X reference map; when moving to Fangs-63, physically compare the dimensions again and test the heavier 3X rigging.
BKK Fangs-63 UA 3/0 is intended for anglers who need the maximum working gape and extra strength available within this versatile 3X range. Correct use is confirmed by matching it to the original rigging and testing the lure in the water; for extreme methods, it may not replace a specialised heavy-duty hook.
Frequently asked questions – BKK Fangs-63 UA 3/0
Which lures suit BKK Fangs-63 UA 3/0?
It suits the largest hardbaits, topwater lures and heavy saltwater rigging where size 2/0 does not provide enough clearance around the body. Always compare it with the original treble hook.
Does size 3/0 have a fixed lure-length or weight range?
No. A universal conversion is not safe for this size. Body width, working gape, buoyancy, original rigging and the lure’s behaviour in the water determine the correct choice.
What is the difference between Fangs-63 3/0 and Fangs-62 3/0?
Fangs-63 is the more robust 3X option with extra strength. Fangs-62 is the lighter 2X option and generally has less effect on the lure’s buoyancy, centre of gravity and action.
When should I choose 2/0 and when 3/0?
Use 2/0 when it provides enough gape and you want to minimise hook weight. Consider 3/0 when a wide lure body shields the points of a 2/0 hook or restricts its free movement.
Is Fangs-63 3/0 a heavy-duty GT treble hook?
It is the largest size in a versatile 3X range and can suit some heavy saltwater applications. It is not, however, an automatic substitute for a specialised heavy-duty model in every extreme fishing method.
Will size 3/0 change the action of a large topwater lure?
It can have a significant effect. The change in weight and drag may alter the lure’s at-rest position, centre of gravity and response during the retrieve. Test the lure directly in the water.
How should I care for Fangs-63 UA 3/0 after saltwater use?
Rinse it with fresh water, allow it to dry completely and inspect the points, eye, split ring and coating. Store hooks with an Ultra-Antirust coating away from items made of lead.
