Product detailed description
Sportex Magnus Mastergrade GT Popper RS-2 Travel is designed for anglers flying to GT, jacks, tarpon and other tropical predators who need a power popping rod in an 85 cm package. The three-piece build keeps transport compact while the rod remains purpose-built for forceful casting, active surface-lure work and high load during the fight.
The high-performance Toray T1100 Helicore blank recovers quickly after the cast and retains progressive reserve in the lower section. Eight stainless FUJI KW SIC guides are protected for saltwater use, a FUJI DPS seat secures the spinning reel and a high-quality Duplon handle supports long popping sessions. The rubber cross-gimbal butt provides stable bracing, while the SEAGUIDE D-Hook stores the hook safely.
The 230 cm / 150 g model is the more versatile travel choice. Its 70–182 g tolerance covers medium to large poppers and stickbaits, while a 403 g rod weight is more comfortable for all-day casting. The 245 cm / 220 g model has a 98–248 g tolerance, longer lever and 434 g weight; it belongs with larger lures, longer casts and situations where maximum reserve is the priority.
For both versions, select lures from saltwater lures for Norway and tropical fishing and keep size and actual weight inside the tolerance of the chosen model. Upgrade factory popper hardware with correctly sized BKK Raptor-Z heavy-duty treble hooks or BKK Lone Diablo singles, and check both split and solid rings.
Beyond surface poppers, the rods also work with sinking stickbaits for saltwater spinning. Keep complete lure weight inside 70–182 g on the 150 g model and 98–248 g on the 220 g model. A sinking stickbait is useful when fish ignore surface disturbance or hold deeper; a popper remains the first choice for actively locating GT and jacks at the surface.
The two-piece GT Popper 230 cm / 150 g is 8 g lighter and has fewer joints, but transports at 156 cm. Travel is the clear airline choice; the standard model is more logical when transport is not restrictive. Choose Tuna Spin for more versatile metal jigs and water-column work, or Shore Jig & Cast for coastal range with lighter lures.
Clean, fully seated joints are critical on a three-piece power rod. Align every section before fishing, check guide rotation during the day, then rinse and dry all sections separately. Always remove or cover a lure with large hooks during transport.
Variant comparison — Sportex Magnus Mastergrade GT Popper RS-2 Travel 3-Piece Rod
| Version | Model | Length | Weight / power class | Pieces | Transport length | Rod weight | Guides | Reel / reel seat | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 230 cm / 150 g / Travel – Spinning Reel | MP2319 Travel | 230 cm | 150 g; tolerance 70–182 g | 3 | 85 cm | 403 g | 8 | Spinning reel / FUJI DPS | Versatile travel popping and stickbaits; the less tiring choice for long fishing days. |
| 245 cm / 220 g / Travel – Spinning Reel | MP2519 Travel | 245 cm | 220 g; tolerance 98–248 g | 3 | 85 cm | 434 g | 8 | Spinning reel / FUJI DPS | Larger poppers, longer casts and maximum reserve for trophy GT and large jacks. |
For most trips and long days with a popper, 230 cm / 150 g is the better all-rounder. Choose 245 cm / 220 g when lures genuinely exceed roughly 100 g, a longer lever is required and higher in-hand weight is acceptable. Both versions transport at 85 cm; the difference is working range, reach and fatigue.

The weight of a hand-finished rod may vary by up to 8% due to manufacturing tolerance. Always assess gram ratings and pound classes together with lure shape and resistance, depth, current, drift speed, line diameter and reel-drag setting.
A carbon blank conducts electricity. Never use the rod during a thunderstorm or near overhead power lines. Maintain a safe distance from electrical conductors during transport and assembly; contact between a carbon rod and a live source can cause a life-threatening injury.
After every saltwater session, remove the reel and rinse the rod with a gentle stream of fresh water. Wipe it down, separate the sections and let everything dry completely. Regularly inspect guide inserts and frames, section joints, the reel-seat thread, handle and butt. Do not allow salt to dry in the thread or around the guides, and do not use a pressure washer.
SPORTEX provides a 10-year extended manufacturer's warranty on the blank. Activation requires registration of the rod within 30 days of purchase and retention of the receipt. The extended warranty applies to the blank; other components and damage caused by overloading, impact or improper handling remain subject to the standard terms.
Frequently asked questions — Sportex Magnus Mastergrade GT Popper RS-2 Travel 3-Piece Rod
Which version is more versatile?
The 230 cm / 150 g model. It is lighter, less tiring and its 70–182 g tolerance covers a large proportion of common poppers and stickbaits.
When should I choose 245 cm / 220 g?
Choose it when you regularly use lures above roughly 100 g, need longer casts and want maximum reserve for large GT or jacks.
Will both models fit the same luggage?
Yes, both have an 85 cm transport length. Still verify the outer dimension of the actual case and the limit of the specific airline.
How does it differ from the two-piece GT Popper?
The standard 230 cm model transports at 156 cm, has fewer joints and weighs 395 g. Travel has three pieces and an 85 cm transport length for airline convenience.
Which hooks should I fit to poppers?
Use strong BKK Raptor-Z trebles or Lone Diablo singles matched to lure size, buoyancy and target fish. Rings and leader must be matched as well.
When should I use a sinking stickbait instead of a popper?
Use one when fish hold below the surface, follow without striking or ignore strong surface disturbance. Stickbait weight must remain inside the selected rod's tolerance and its hardware must match GT or jacks.
How should I care for the joints after saltwater use?
Rinse with fresh water, separate and dry every section. Joints must remain free of salt and sand; check full seating and guide alignment during fishing.
