Product detailed description

Sportex Magnus Mastergrade GT Popper RS-2 is a purpose-built rod for repeated power casting and working large surface lures. At 230 cm it provides enough leverage for a popper or stickbait while remaining shorter and easier to control than Shore Jig & Cast. Its core role is tropical fishing for GT, large jacks, tarpon and other fish that strike hard and immediately test the blank, drag and terminal hardware.

The Toray T1100 Helicore blank combines fast recovery after the cast with progressive power transfer during the fight. Eight stainless FUJI KW SIC guides are protected for saltwater use, the FUJI DPS seat accepts a powerful spinning reel and the Duplon handle remains secure in a wet hand. A rubber cross-gimbal butt enables stable bracing, while the SEAGUIDE D-Hook keeps the lure away from ceramic guide inserts.

Model MP2329 has a nominal 150 g rating and a manufacturer-stated 75–185 g tolerance. The lower limit matters as much as the upper one: a popper that is too light may not load the blank effectively and will be less precise to work. With large lures, calculate actual weight after hooks and rings are fitted, and also consider frontal resistance during the retrieve.

The rod belongs with robust poppers and stickbaits from saltwater lures for Norway and tropical fishing. To upgrade factory trebles, use correctly sized BKK Raptor-Z heavy-duty treble hooks or BKK Lone Diablo single hooks. Check split-ring strength as well — hardware between lure and fish must not be the weakest point.

Beyond surface poppers, the rod also works very well with sinking stickbaits and saltwater spinning lures. The complete lure must remain inside the 75–185 g tolerance and its action should match the target: a slim stickbait supports faster work through the water column, while a bulky popper creates stronger surface disturbance. In both cases, use the actual weight after hooks and rings are fitted.

Compared with GT Popper Travel, the two-piece MP2329 has a longer 156 cm transport length but fewer joints and weighs 8 g less than the 230 cm travel model. Choose Travel when airline packing demands an 85 cm package. When transport is not limiting and a pure two-piece performance build is preferred, this model is more logical. Tuna Spin is more versatile with metal jigs and water-column lures, but GT Popper is the more precise choice for sustained work with large poppers.

A power popping rod is not permission to pull without thought. Set drag pressure to match the line, leader, hooks and fishing location; always check the area behind you and the condition of every ring before casting. Large trebles are hazardous during handling — use long pliers and gloves, and fully remove or safely cover the lure during transport.

Version Model Length Weight / power class Pieces Transport length Rod weight Guides Reel / reel seat Recommended use
230 cm / 150 g / Standard – Spinning Reel MP2329 230 cm 150 g; tolerance 75–185 g 2 156 cm 395 g 8 Spinning reel / FUJI DPS Power popping and stickbait fishing for GT and other large tropical predators.

MP2329 is the only two-piece version on this product card: 230 cm, nominal 150 g, with a 75–185 g tolerance. Choose it when casting performance and sustained work with large poppers matter more than compact airline transport. GT Popper Travel MP2319 provides the same nominal rating with an 85 cm transport length.

The weight of a hand-finished rod may vary by up to 8% due to manufacturing tolerance. Always assess gram ratings and pound classes together with lure shape and resistance, depth, current, drift speed, line diameter and reel-drag setting.

A carbon blank conducts electricity. Never use the rod during a thunderstorm or near overhead power lines. Maintain a safe distance from electrical conductors during transport and assembly; contact between a carbon rod and a live source can cause a life-threatening injury.

After every saltwater session, remove the reel and rinse the rod with a gentle stream of fresh water. Wipe it down, separate the sections and let everything dry completely. Regularly inspect guide inserts and frames, section joints, the reel-seat thread, handle and butt. Do not allow salt to dry in the thread or around the guides, and do not use a pressure washer.

SPORTEX provides a 10-year extended manufacturer's warranty on the blank. Activation requires registration of the rod within 30 days of purchase and retention of the receipt. The extended warranty applies to the blank; other components and damage caused by overloading, impact or improper handling remain subject to the standard terms.

Frequently asked questions — Sportex Magnus Mastergrade GT Popper RS-2 2-Piece Rod

Which lures is the rod designed for?

Primarily large poppers and stickbaits within 75–185 g, plus other cast lures whose weight and heavy-duty hardware match the setup.

Is 150 g the maximum weight?

No. It is the nominal figure; SPORTEX states a 75–185 g tolerance. Calculate actual weight after hooks and rings are fitted and consider lure resistance.

How does it differ from GT Popper Travel?

The two-piece model has a 156 cm transport length, fewer joints and a 395 g rod weight. Travel has three pieces and an 85 cm transport length for airline luggage.

When should I choose Tuna Spin instead?

Choose Tuna Spin for more versatile casting with metal jigs, stickbaits and water-column lures. GT Popper is more specialised for repeated work with a large popper.

Which hooks and rings should I use?

Use correctly sized heavy-duty BKK Raptor-Z trebles or Lone Diablo singles and matching strong rings. A hook that is too heavy must not ruin lure action or buoyancy.

Is the rod also suitable for sinking stickbaits?

Yes, provided the complete lure remains inside the 75–185 g tolerance. A sinking stickbait extends use below the surface, while repeated power work with large poppers remains the rod's primary specialisation.

Which reel should I use?

Use a powerful saltwater spinning reel with a rigid axle, suitable capacity and a high-quality drag. The rod has a FUJI DPS seat and is not designed for a multiplier reel.
