Cutbait Herring Atomic Mackerel 460 g is a heavy deep-water soft bait designed for targeted fishing of halibut and large cod. Use it when you need to keep the lure close to the bottom in strong drift, heavy current, or deeper water where lighter versions stop working.

Atomic Mackerel – why aggressive colours work
The mackerel contrast (dark back / lighter belly) creates a highly readable silhouette in the water column. In greater depths, low light or stained water, this stronger profile is often the trigger that makes fish commit to the strike.

Weight vs depth: the key to success
Halibut are extremely sensitive predators. An overweighted lure in shallow water can feel unnatural – fish detect the centre of gravity, vibrations and swimming action. In deeper water, however, higher weight is essential to reach the feeding zone. The rule is simple: always choose the lightest weight that still reliably holds depth in the given drift.

Hook setup: at 460 g a stinger is almost essential
With longer and heavier lures, big fish often strike from behind. The main head hook may not always convert the take. Adding a tail stinger significantly increases hook-up ratio. Keep in mind the higher risk of bottom contact – precise drift control becomes even more important.

Fine-tuning for maximum performance: scent and added glitter
To get the most out of the lure, combine the mackerel colour with a matching mackerel scent. The colour + scent profile becomes crucial on tough days when fish are cautious. A smart upgrade is also added screw-in glitter spikes, which go directly into the soft body and add subtle visual stimulus without affecting the rig. For scent trails, you can also use scents matched to your target species.

After-fishing care: a simple rule that saves money
After every saltwater session, rinse the lure thoroughly with fresh water – ideally right at the marina when washing the boat. This removes salt that shortens the lifespan of both metal components and the soft material.

Long-term storage tip (this really makes a difference)
After rinsing, allow the lure to dry completely. Only then store it in a sealed bag and lightly coat it with a neutral lubricant. Worm Oil is ideal – virtually odourless, so it won’t stink up your car or home, while keeping the soft bait flexible, supple and stable. Properly treated, the lure remains in excellent condition for many years without drying out or cracking.
