Cutbait Herring is a deep-water softbait for halibut fishing and big cod, built to track steadily at depth and under drift. The Blue Mackerel pattern focuses on practical visibility: strong contrast (dark back / light belly) and a clean silhouette that remains readable in depth and reduced light.

Why mackerel
Technically, a mackerel pattern is useful when you need (1) a high-contrast profile in the water column and (2) consistent visibility against the bottom during drift. Combined with a heavier head, the lure holds its line and stays in the strike zone more reliably than lighter setups.

What we keep from the original Savage Gear foundation
Developed for large arctic predators with “under-skin” detailing and stable behaviour at depth. Heavy-duty forged hooks are intended for confident hook-ups and strong fights.

SAF on-the-water notes:

→ Pick by depth & drift: 270g is a solid all-rounder for typical fjord depths and moderate drift. If you lose bottom contact, move up to the 25cm / 460g version.
→ Retrieve: work close to bottom. Short lifts (20–60cm), controlled drops on a tight line, and pauses. The goal is staying in the same depth band, not pulling the lure high.
→ Stinger: halibut often contact the rear section first – a stinger increases conversion on tail taps.
→ Scent dip: useful when fish test the lure or commit slowly; scent can extend holding time and improve hook-ups. See scents.
→ Go heavier: for stronger drift, more depth or fishing below 100m for big cod, the 25cm / 460g “big brother” is the better tool.
