Cutbait Herring is a deep-sea soft bait for halibut and large cod, designed for stable performance at depth and during drift. The Green Mackerel version is built on a natural mackerel look – darker back, lighter belly, and a readable silhouette that works in clear water and in reduced light at depth. The 20 cm / 270 g version is a versatile choice for fjords and moderate drift when you want to keep the lure working close to the bottom for as long as possible.
Why mackerel
The mackerel pattern is technically effective in two situations: (1) when you need a visible profile in the water column, and (2) when you want the lure to stand out against the bottom during drift. With Green Mackerel, the pattern often shines when you want a more natural look (fjord water, low light, changing visibility) while still keeping the bait clearly “readable” from distance. Combined with a 270 g head, the lure tracks with a stable path and stays in the working zone more reliably than lighter setups.

Cutbait Herring was developed for targeting large fish in Arctic waters, with emphasis on a realistic look (detailed “under-skin” colouring) and predictable behaviour at depth. The rigging uses robust forged hooks built for powerful hooksets and demanding fights.
→ Depth and drift selection: 270 g is a versatile choice for standard fjord depths and moderate drift. If you start losing bottom contact even with 270 g, move up to the heavier 25 cm / 460 g version.
→ Retrieve: keep the lure primarily in the near-bottom zone. Short lifts (20–60 cm), a controlled drop on a tight line, and a brief pause work best. The goal is to hold the lure in the same zone, not to lift it unnecessarily high.
→ Stinger: halibut often strike the rear part of the bait – a stinger significantly increases hook-up ratio, especially on tail bites.
→ Scent / dip: useful when fish take the lure cautiously or only “taste” it. Dipping in scent can extend holding time and increase the number of solid hook-ups. See the Scents category.
→ Heavier option for tougher conditions: for strong drift, greater depths, or fishing below 100 m for large cod, stepping up to 25 cm / 460 g makes sense thanks to higher inertia and better tracking.
