Cutbait Herring is a deep-sea soft bait designed for halibut and large cod, built for stable performance at greater depths and in strong drift. The Green Mackerel version is based on a natural mackerel look – darker back, lighter belly, and a readable silhouette that works in clear water and in reduced light at depth. The 25 cm / 460 g version is intended for situations where lighter heads lose bottom contact and you need more weight to stay in the productive zone.
Why mackerel
Mackerel is one of the most energy-rich and commonly hunted prey species for halibut and large cod in the North Atlantic. From a technical perspective, the mackerel pattern excels in two situations: (1) when you need a strong profile in the water column, and (2) when you want the lure to stand out against the bottom during drift. At 460 g, the lure holds a stable track in stronger current, reaches working depth quickly, and maintains better contact during vertical presentation.

Cutbait Herring was developed for targeting big fish in Arctic waters, with emphasis on a realistic look (detailed “under-skin” colouring) and controlled behaviour at depth. The lure is rigged with robust forged hooks designed for powerful hooksets and reliable fish control during the fight. The overall construction is intended for deep water and forceful vertical fishing.
→ Depth and drift selection: 25 cm / 460 g is the right choice for stronger current, deeper areas, and fishing below 100 m for large cod. If you lose bottom contact with lighter versions, this weight brings control back.
→ Retrieve: keep the lure primarily in the near-bottom zone. Short technical lifts (20–50 cm), followed by a controlled drop on a tight line and a brief pause, work best. The goal is to keep the bait in the strike zone, not to lift it unnecessarily high above the fish.
→ Stinger: large halibut often strike the rear part of the bait – adding a stinger significantly improves hook-up ratio, especially during hard attacks in deep water.
