Product detailed description
Sportex Magnus Mastergrade Spiral Jigging RS-2 is a specialised short rod for vertical fishing with a multiplier reel. Its eleven guides do not begin and end on one straight axis: the line is transferred in a spiral from the top of the blank to below it. Under heavy load, the line therefore creates less sideways rolling force, the setup feels more stable in the hand and the angler spends less effort countering torque.
The foundation is a lightweight Toray T1100 Helicore carbon blank with a specialised upper-section joint and progressive power distribution. Spiral-mounted stainless FUJI KW SIC guides are protected for saltwater use, the trigger-style FUJI TCS seat secures a multiplier reel and a split Duplon handle provides a firm grip. A rubber cross-gimbal butt and SEAGUIDE D-Hook complete the offshore power build.
This rod requires a multiplier reel, not a spinning reel. The trigger and spiral guide train are engineered for a reel mounted above the blank. After the transition guides, the line runs below the blank; this is not an assembly error or a rotated section. Align each section by the intended guide path and do not attempt to straighten the spiral.
SJ1920 and SJ1930 are sold and specified by specialist retailers as 20 and 30 lb versions. These figures are boat-rod power classes, not 20/30 g casting weights. The generic official SPORTEX table uses a gram-labelled column, but product variants, specialist listings and the rod design confirm the pound-class interpretation. The English multivariant therefore deliberately retains 'lb' and does not invent a precise gram range.
The 20 lb class is the more responsive and lighter choice for active work, shallower water and moderate current. The 30 lb class adds reserve for a heavier jig, deeper water, faster drift and stronger fish. Choose actual lure weight by depth, current, profile resistance, line and drag; without a published manufacturer tolerance, one universal gram ceiling would be misleading.
Spiral Jigging is naturally paired with vertical metal jigs worked below the boat. The 20 lb class adds sensitivity and reduces fatigue for light to medium jigging; 30 lb provides more reserve in deeper water, stronger drift and with larger lures. In tropical water it can target jacks, amberjack, grouper and smaller tuna; in northern water, cod, coalfish, pollack and redfish.
Select vertical metal lures from pilks and speed jigs. A long slim jig suits faster work through the water column, while a compact or asymmetric profile creates a stronger fall and slower presentation. Match assist hooks and strong rings to drag pressure; without a published gram tolerance, select weight conservatively by class, depth and current.
Compared with a conventional baitcast Mastergrade Jigging rod, Spiral uses different guide geometry and focuses on reducing torque under load. Conventional Jigging provides nominal 100–250 g options and standard spinning-reel models as well; Spiral makes sense for an angler who already knows a multiplier is required and prefers a stable line path below the blank during the fight.
Variant comparison — Sportex Magnus Mastergrade Spiral Jigging RS-2 2-Piece Rod
| Version | Model | Length | Weight / power class | Pieces | Transport length | Rod weight | Guides | Reel / reel seat | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 190 cm / 20 lb / Spiral – Multiplier Reel | SJ1920 | 190 cm | 20 lb power class | 2 | 139 cm | 219 g | 11 | Multiplier / FUJI TCS | More responsive active jigging, shallower water and moderate current; lighter lure work. |
| 190 cm / 30 lb / Spiral – Multiplier Reel | SJ1930 | 190 cm | 30 lb power class | 2 | 139 cm | 226 g | 11 | Multiplier / FUJI TCS | Deeper water, stronger current, heavier jigs and more reserve for offshore predators. |
Choose 20 lb for more responsive active jigging and moderate conditions; select 30 lb for deeper water, current and heavier lures. Both models are 190 cm long, transport at 139 cm, have two pieces, 11 spiral-mounted guides and a trigger-style FUJI TCS seat. 'lb' is deliberate in the multivariant and table — these are not 20 or 30 g rods.

The weight of a hand-finished rod may vary by up to 8% due to manufacturing tolerance. Always assess gram ratings and pound classes together with lure shape and resistance, depth, current, drift speed, line diameter and reel-drag setting.
A carbon blank conducts electricity. Never use the rod during a thunderstorm or near overhead power lines. Maintain a safe distance from electrical conductors during transport and assembly; contact between a carbon rod and a live source can cause a life-threatening injury.
After every saltwater session, remove the reel and rinse the rod with a gentle stream of fresh water. Wipe it down, separate the sections and let everything dry completely. Regularly inspect guide inserts and frames, section joints, the reel-seat thread, handle and butt. Do not allow salt to dry in the thread or around the guides, and do not use a pressure washer.
SPORTEX provides a 10-year extended manufacturer's warranty on the blank. Activation requires registration of the rod within 30 days of purchase and retention of the receipt. The extended warranty applies to the blank; other components and damage caused by overloading, impact or improper handling remain subject to the standard terms.
Frequently asked questions — Sportex Magnus Mastergrade Spiral Jigging RS-2 2-Piece Rod
What is a spiral guide layout?
The guides transfer the line from the top of the blank to below the rod. This reduces the blank's tendency to roll sideways under load and makes the setup more stable.
Does a spinning reel belong on this rod?
No. The trigger-style FUJI TCS seat and spiral guide train are designed for a multiplier or compatible baitcasting reel.
Do 20/30 mean casting weight in grams?
No. The versions are 20 and 30 lb power classes. They are not 20/30 g spinning rods, and no fictitious gram range is created without a published tolerance.
Which class should I choose?
Choose 20 lb for more responsive active jigging in moderate conditions, or 30 lb for deeper water, current, heavier jigs and larger fish.
How does it differ from baitcast Mastergrade Jigging?
Spiral takes the line around and below the blank to reduce torque. Conventional baitcast Jigging uses a standard guide path and specific nominal 100–250 g ratings.
Which lures make sense for Spiral Jigging?
Use vertical metal jigs, speed jigs and pilks with matching assist hooks. Select profile and weight by depth, current, drift speed and the 20 or 30 lb class; SPORTEX does not publish a precise gram range.
How do I assemble a spiral rod correctly?
Follow the natural guide path around the blank, fully seat every joint and do not try to align all guides in one straight line. Check section rotation during fishing.
