Dead On Plastix Cocoa from the Dye of the Dead range is a concentrated liquid plastisol colour for making soft plastic lures. It creates a warm cocoa-brown to brown-amber colour base for natural soft plastic lures, darker body sections and your own laminates. Add the colour concentrate to your base plastisol; it is neither ready-to-use plastisol nor a surface paint for finished lures. The manufacturer describes the Dye of the Dead range as non-phthalate.
Its key feature is NO-BLEED, which reduces colour migration. When differently coloured layers are in contact, colour can gradually move between them and alter their shade. - Shake the closed bottle of Cocoa vigorously for at least about one minute to make the contents uniform.
- Add a small amount of colour first. Follow the instructions for your plastisol and the current colourant guidance on when to add additives and how to process the mixture.
- Mix thoroughly with a clean, completely dry tool.
- Make a small test casting with a thickness similar to the lure you intend to make.
- Allow the sample to cool and assess the shade, intensity and appearance when held up to the light.
- If you need a stronger shade, add further small doses and check again. Write down the ratio that works.
- Add glitter and other effect additives separately; after adding them, test the complete final recipe as well.
For smaller batches, use borosilicate glass containers, such as a 250 ml measuring cup or a 500 ml measuring cup. Clean, dry stainless steel mixing balls can help homogenise colours; choose their size and number to suit the bottle.
Which bottle size should I choose?
- 10 ml – for testing a shade, small batches and workshops using many different colours.
- 30 ml – a versatile size for regular hobby use and smaller production runs.
- 100 ml – for frequent use, larger batches and recipes where Cocoa is a staple workshop colour.
