Product detailed description

Dead On Plastix Junebug from the Dye of the Dead range is a concentrated liquid plastisol colour for making soft plastic lures. It produces a deep, dark purple to grape shade. Add the colour concentrate to your base plastisol; it is neither ready-to-use plastisol nor a surface paint for finished lures. The manufacturer describes this range as non-phthalate.

Its key feature is NO-BLEED, which reduces colour migration. When differently coloured layers are in contact, colour can gradually move between them and alter their shade. Junebug is designed to greatly reduce this unwanted transfer. This is useful for laminated, two-colour and multicolour lures, especially when combining a dark back with a light belly and aiming to keep the layers visually separate over time. Always test the complete combination with your chosen plastisol, second colour and additives.

NO-BLEED for clean laminates – greatly reducing unwanted colour migration helps keep dark layers visually separate from light and contrasting parts of the lure. It does not guarantee zero migration under every condition.

Junebug is a colour base for your own recipes. The classic fishing colour often combines dark purple with green glitter, but the colour itself contains no glitter. To create this look, add SaBoFlex Glitter Green separately. Other plastisol glitters, such as Purple, Blue, Black or Holographic Silver, let you adjust contrast and sparkle. Always use additives suitable for plastisol processing temperatures.

Junebug is a base, not a finished recipe – adjust the intensity of the dark purple shade and the type and amount of separately added glitter to suit your lure.

The final shade depends on colour dosage, plastisol type, lure thickness, other additives, lighting and the transparency of the layer. The same mix can therefore look different in a thin tail and a thick body. Neither a photograph nor the concentrate in the bottle is an exact colour chart for the finished lure. Judge the result on a cooled test sample of the appropriate thickness. Junebug is a standard Dye of the Dead shade; without an explicit manufacturer declaration, we do not describe it as UV Neon, Pearl or Metallic.

Dosage and shaking

For standard Dye of the Dead shades, the manufacturer gives a guideline of 40–50 drops per 1 US cup of plastisol. Its reference colour samples use approximately 25 drops per 1/2 cup. These figures describe the manufacturer’s samples and dosage guidance, rather than a fixed recipe for every lure. Drop size can vary with the bottle and dispensing tip, including our 10, 30 and 100 ml bottles.

We therefore do not give a fixed conversion to drops per 100 g of plastisol. Start with a smaller amount, mix thoroughly and increase the intensity gradually. The manufacturer recommends shaking the bottle vigorously for at least about one minute before use. Once you have adjusted the shade on a cooled sample, record the amount of plastisol, the colour dose and any other additives. Use the same dosing method when repeating the recipe.

Workshop procedure

  1. Prepare and mix the base plastisol according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Follow the specified processing conditions when heating and do not overheat the mixture.
  2. Shake the closed bottle of Junebug vigorously for at least about one minute to make the contents uniform.
  3. Add a small amount of colour first. Follow the instructions for your plastisol and the current colourant guidance on when to add additives and how to process the mixture.
  4. Mix thoroughly with a clean, completely dry tool.
  5. Make a small test casting with a thickness similar to the lure you intend to make.
  6. Allow the sample to cool and assess the shade, intensity and appearance when held up to the light.
  7. If you need a stronger shade, add further small doses and check again. Write down the ratio that works.
  8. Add glitter and other effect additives separately; after adding them, test the complete final recipe as well.

For smaller batches, use borosilicate glass containers, such as a 250 ml measuring cup or a 500 ml measuring cup. Clean, dry stainless steel mixing balls can help homogenise colours; choose their size and number to suit the bottle.

Which bottle size should I choose?

  • 10 ml – for testing a shade, small batches and workshops using many different colours.
  • 30 ml – a versatile size for regular hobby use and smaller production runs.
  • 100 ml – for frequent use, larger batches and recipes where Junebug is a staple workshop colour.

All three bottle sizes contain the same colour at the same concentration. Choosing a different volume changes the amount available, not the strength of the colourant.

Lamination and twin injection

Use Junebug for a dark back, a contrasting body section or a separate colour layer. For twin injection, prepare the two coloured mixtures separately. The injector setup can use the Twin Adapter / T-ADAPTER and Double Clamp / T-KLAMMER; check compatibility with your particular injectors and mould. NO-BLEED helps reduce subsequent colour migration, while forming a sharp boundary also depends on the mould, temperatures and injection technique. Check a new colour pairing both after cooling and after storing the sample.

Storage and safe handling

Store the colour upright, tightly closed and at a stable room temperature, away from direct sunlight and temperature extremes. Shake thoroughly before every use. Follow the current product label and safety instructions for precise storage conditions.

When working with hot plastisol, wear safety glasses and heat-resistant gloves. Provide effective ventilation, ideally extraction at the source, and do not overheat the plastisol. Containers and tools must be clean and completely dry; keep water away from the hot mixture. Keep colourants and other workshop materials out of the reach of children and follow the instructions supplied by the manufacturers of your plastisol and additives.

Dead On Plastix Junebug: frequently asked questions

What does NO-BLEED mean for Dead On Plastix Junebug?

The colour is designed to greatly reduce unwanted colour migration between adjacent plastisol layers. It helps keep colours separate in laminates; it is not an absolute guarantee for every mixture and every condition.

What shade does Junebug produce?

A deep, dark purple to grape shade. The exact appearance depends on dosage, plastisol, lure thickness, additives and lighting. Assess it on a cooled sample.

Does Junebug contain green glitter?

No. Junebug is the colour base itself. Add the green glitter commonly used in classic Junebug recipes separately to achieve your preferred look.

How much colour should I use?

The manufacturer gives a guideline of 40–50 drops per 1 US cup and approximately 25 drops per 1/2 cup of plastisol for its reference samples. Drop size varies with the dispensing tip, so start lower and add gradually. We do not give a fixed conversion per 100 g.

How long should I shake the colour before use?

The manufacturer recommends shaking vigorously for at least about one minute. The contents of the bottle must be evenly mixed before dosing.

Is Junebug suitable for laminated lures?

Yes. Reduced migration is particularly useful with a dark back and light belly or other contrasting layers. Always test the full combination of colours, plastisol and additives.

Is Junebug a UV, fluorescent or metallic colour?

Junebug is a standard Dye of the Dead shade. The manufacturer does not identify it as UV Neon, Pearl or Metallic in the referenced information, so we do not attribute UV, fluorescent, pearlescent or metallic properties to it.

Can I combine Junebug with other colours and glitter?

Yes. Use additives suitable for plastisol and start with a small trial batch when developing your own recipes. Adding another colour can change both the shade and the mixture’s migration behaviour. The NO-BLEED property cannot automatically be assumed for every combination.
