Product detailed description
VMC 7154 BN 1/0 is a short, reinforced Fireball jig hook for casting compact jig heads and building vertical fishing rigs. Its Aberdeen profile, 90° eye and 2X Strong construction are combined with a Short Shank. In a Fireball rig, the hook stays close to the head instead of extending far through the bait as a conventional long-shank jig hook would.
The 2X Strong designation identifies the reinforced construction. This is useful where a compact hook needs a greater strength reserve than a light jig hook. It does not specify a breaking strain in kilograms. When choosing a mould, the wire diameter matters as well as the hook's nominal size: the groove must accommodate the hook without forcing the two halves shut.
The 7154 uses high-carbon steel, a forged construction and a Needle Cone point. The short shank, hook bend and 90° Flat Eye Jig eye together determine how it sits in the casting. A 90° eye alone is therefore not enough to establish compatibility with a mould intended for a different VMC model.
Size 1/0 is the smaller of the two sizes in the SAF 7154 range. Its smaller bend suits smaller bait and a compact vertical presentation. A smaller size does not mean fine wire: this version also has 2X Strong construction. Leave the point exposed and enough clearance inside the bend. If bulkier bait needs more room, compare size 2/0 and check the specific mould at the same time.
Verified Fireball moulds for size 1/0
- Your Mold F152 – Fireball jig heads in 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 g; the supplier specifies VMC 7154 1/0 and explicitly excludes size 2/0.
- Your Mold F231 – Fireball jig heads in 25, 30, 35 and 40 g; the supplier lists both VMC 7154 1/0 and 2/0, with a preference for 2/0 to suit the bait.
The stated weights are for lead castings. Before pouring, dry-fit the 1/0 hook in the selected cavity: the shank, bend and eye must sit correctly and the mould must close fully without pressure on the hook. Other Fireball moulds are not automatically compatible.
The short shank keeps the 1/0 rig compact while leaving more of the bait free. This is the practical reason for choosing a Fireball hook rather than selecting a conventional jig hook by size number alone. Use size 1/0 with F152. F231 allows either size to be selected according to the bait; size 2/0 provides a larger bend. A change to another 90° model, or to a 60° jig hook, requires a fresh check of the mould fit.
BN means a Black Nickel finish
This VMC 7154 has a Black Nickel finish. The finish is part of the hook specification; it does not change the 90° geometry, the Short Shank design or the mould compatibility.
After fishing, clean and dry the hook before storage. Check the point and the condition of the finish after contact with hard bottom or stones, and replace a damaged hook.
The pack contains 10 VMC 7154 BN hooks in size 1/0. Use them to prepare a batch of Fireball heads with the same hook geometry. Melting equipment and head coatings belong to the casting workflow; they do not determine whether a particular hook will fit a mould.
Frequently asked questions – VMC 7154 BN 1/0
When should I choose 1/0 instead of 2/0?
Choose 1/0 for smaller bait and a compact presentation, provided the point remains exposed with sufficient clearance. It is also the correct size for the F152 mould. F231 is specified for both sizes, although the supplier prefers 2/0 to suit the bait. Head weight alone does not determine hook size.
Which moulds are verified for VMC 7154 BN 1/0?
The verified moulds are Your Mold F152 for 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 g heads and Your Mold F231 for 25, 30, 35 and 40 g heads. F152 takes size 1/0, not 2/0. F231 is specified for both sizes. Always dry-fit the hook and check that the mould closes fully before casting.
What do 2X Strong and Short Shank mean?
2X Strong identifies the reinforced hook construction; Short Shank means a short shank. This combination suits compact Fireball heads and vertical rigs. The 2X marking is not a stated load rating in kilograms.
Can I replace it with any other 90° jig hook?
No. Even at the same nominal size, another model can differ in wire diameter, shank length, bend and eye position. Check the exact model and size against the mould specification. A 60° hook also has a different geometry.
What finish and pack size does this product have?
The hook has a Black Nickel finish and is supplied as 10 hooks in size 1/0. BN is the finish designation; it does not mean that the hook is made from stainless steel.
