SAF PLASTI-X X-RAY represents a very specific branch of our handmade soft bait range, built mainly for saltwater fishing in Norway. In terms of shape, this is a slim, no-tail, smelt-style concept that does a very good job of imitating the kind of prey saltwater predators regularly pick up in the water column – small baitfish, slender marine creatures and narrow elongated forage. That is exactly where the strength of the X-RAY series lies. It does not behave like an overly aggressive soft bait, but like a natural, lively and highly effective lure for moments when you want to show fish something believable and deadly at the same time.
The X-RAY series is, in our view, a real treat especially for pollock, coalfish, cod and other saltwater species that actively feed in the water column or respond well to a worked lure away from the bottom. One of the biggest advantages is that these baits are not limited to one single style of fishing. They work very well for vertical jigging, but at the same time they are also excellent for classic spinning from the boat, including longer casts and actively covering water. You do not have to fish them only near the bottom – X-RAY also makes a lot of sense for pelagic fishing, where you want to work the lure through the water column and search for active fish.
That is exactly what makes X-RAY such a versatile saltwater soft bait. In one situation you can work it more subtly and naturally, while in another you can speed things up and let it behave like a slim, lively mouthful for fish reacting to movement, silhouette and direction changes. Compared to classic paddle-tail soft baits, the smelt-style no-tail construction has a different character in the water – it feels less mechanical and often gives saltwater predators a cleaner, more natural and very attractive signal.
One of the big strengths of the SAF PLASTI-X X-RAY series is also the way these baits are built. We make them from quality material, they are laminated, fitted with glued eyes and overall they feel more solid and more durable than many ordinary serially produced soft baits. Thanks to their slightly stronger construction, they also handle real saltwater use extremely well. X-RAY is therefore not just a lure that can catch fish, but a lure you can keep fishing for a long time. That is exactly why it becomes such an interesting alternative for anglers who like classic zoom-style soft baits in Norway, but want something a bit tougher, more durable and better suited to hard use on the boat.
Although the main home of the X-RAY series is clearly the sea, it can also have its place in freshwater fishing, especially wherever a slimmer, no-tail and more natural-looking profile makes sense. But the centre of gravity of this whole series is clearly built around the north – Norway, saltwater predators and fishing situations where functionality, durability and real fish-catching ability matter more than theory.
If you are looking for a properly built saltwater soft bait with a more natural silhouette, very good durability and broad use from vertical jigging to classic spinning from the boat, then SAF PLASTI-X X-RAY is exactly the kind of lure that deserves a place in your Norway tackle box.
