Product detailed description
BKK Fangs-63 UA #8 is the smallest size in the Fangs-63 range of all-round forged 3X treble hooks. Its main role is to provide more robust rigging for compact hardbaits that do not yet need the greater working gape of size #6. Specific reference examples include 60 mm sinking stickbaits weighing approximately 7–9 g. This figure indicates a real area of use, but it is not a fixed conversion between lure length, weight and hook size.
More than body length determines whether #8 is the correct choice. Body width and thickness, hook-hanger positions, split-ring size, number of treble hooks, buoyancy and the weight of the original rigging also matter. A slim 60 mm stickbait may need a different hook from a crankbait of the same length with a bulkier body. The points must remain exposed and the hook must rotate freely without repeatedly striking the lure body.
The 3X designation describes the hook’s construction and wire class, not an exact load rating in kilograms or a claim that it will carry precisely three times the load. In the same nominal size, it is a more robust choice than the 2X Fangs-62. This additional reserve is the main reason to move to Fangs-63, but the greater weight and resistance of a 3X hook can also have more influence on a finely balanced lure.
The Fangs-63 geometry is based on a bend inspired by the traditional O’Shaughnessy shape. BKK combines it with a forged construction, regular eye and three needle-sharp points with standard barbs. This combination is designed to provide working versatility and secure hook hold within the 3X range; the actual result also depends on point sharpness, split-ring condition and the setup of the complete rig.
On a compact hardbait, size #8 must provide enough clearance between the points and the sides of the lure. On a model fitted with two trebles, also check that the front and rear hooks do not lock together during casting, twitching or on the fall. Test the lure in the water after replacement: check the buoyancy of a floating lure, the neutral position of a suspending model, and the sink rate and angle of a sinking stickbait.
Within the Fangs-63 range, #6 is the next larger option. #8 makes sense when a smaller profile and less influence on the balance of a compact hardbait are the priorities. Move to #6 when #8 does not provide enough working gape or its points remain too close to the lure’s sides. Physical comparison must confirm the decision because there is no fixed lure-length or weight boundary between these two sizes.
Fangs-63 UA #8 and Fangs-62 UA #8 share the same size number but perform different construction roles. Fangs-62 is the 2X version in the same family and makes more sense when lower rigging weight and sensitive preservation of the lure’s action matter more. Fangs-63 is the 3X choice for a greater strength reserve. The #8 designation alone does not guarantee the same overall height, gape or weight, so compare both hooks directly before replacement.
Size #8 can also be compared with Sting-32 MT. Sting-32 is a 2X range intended for freshwater and light inshore use, with an inward-turned Combat Point and a matt finish. Fangs-63 UA instead adds 3X construction, needle points in the Fangs geometry and an Ultra-Antirust coating. The choice is therefore not simply between a “weaker” and “stronger” hook; the fishing environment, lure action and required point geometry also matter.
The Ultra-Antirust coating provides increased corrosion resistance and gives #8 a natural role in saltwater, although the hook can also be used in freshwater. The corrosion-resistant finish does not replace inspection after impact with rock or another hard obstruction. Mechanically damaged coating, a damaged eye or a blunt point are reasons to replace the hook even when no corrosion is visible at first glance.
Treble-hook sizing is not dimensionally standardised between manufacturers or construction ranges. Fangs-63 UA #8 is therefore not an automatic replacement for every original hook marked #8. Compare overall height, working gape, shank length, wire diameter, eye and weight. Only a subsequent test in the water will show whether the lure has retained its original action and position.
After saltwater use, rinse the hook with fresh water, allow it to dry completely and inspect all three points, barbs, eye, forged profile and split ring. Store hooks with an Ultra-Antirust coating separately from lead items. Return them to the tackle box only when dry, so residual moisture does not impair the condition of the hook or other metal tackle.
| Size | Pack | Position in the range | Typical lures and applications | When to choose Fangs-63 instead of Fangs-62 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #8 | 8 pcs | Smallest 3X size in the range | Compact hardbaits and sinking stickbaits; verified examples: 60 mm / 7–9 g | When the small lure can genuinely carry the more robust 3X rigging and Fangs-62 #8 does not provide the required strength reserve |
| #6 | 8 pcs | Small all-round inshore size | Minnows, stickbaits and smaller swimming poppers; verified examples: 65–125 mm / 15–31 g | When more working gape than #8 is required, but #4 could unnecessarily affect the lure’s action or buoyancy |
| #4 | 8 pcs | Compact working 3X size | Stickbaits, smaller topwaters and compact metal lures; verified stickbait examples: 85 mm / 24–28 g | When Fangs-62 #4 preserves the lure’s action, but the expected load calls for a greater 3X strength reserve |
| #2 | 7 pcs | Medium working 3X size | Poppers and sinking stickbaits around 10–12 cm; verified examples: 105 mm / 25–40 g | When #4 does not provide enough gape or reserve, but #1 would add unnecessary weight to the lure |
| #1 | 7 pcs | Power-oriented size for medium topwaters | Stickbaits and poppers; verified examples: 130–140 mm / 30–55 g | When Fangs-62 #1 does not provide the required reserve and the lure can carry the heavier 3X treble without losing its intended action |
| 1/0 | 6 pcs | Large all-round 3X size | Larger floating and sinking stickbaits and topwaters; verified examples: 140 mm / 43–55 g | When #1 does not provide enough gape, but the lure body and buoyancy do not yet require 2/0 |
| 2/0 | 6 pcs | Large working 3X size | Bigbaits, glidebaits, large stickbaits, topwaters and robust metal lures | When 1/0 does not provide enough clearance around a wider body; always compare the actual dimensions with the original rigging |
| 3/0 | 5 pcs | Largest size in the range | The largest hardbaits and topwaters, plus heavy saltwater rigging that can carry a 3X profile | For maximum working gape within Fangs-63; not automatically as a replacement for a specialised heavy-duty treble hook |
This version contains 8 treble hooks in size #8. SAF does not include the exact weight of one hook in the product parameters without carrying out its own physical weighing. Check all three points before first use and repeat the inspection after contact with rock, metal or another hard obstruction.
For more detailed guidance on size, working gape and the effect of hook weight on the lure, see our BKK Fangs-62 UA treble hook size guide. The article provides a lighter 2X reference map; when moving to Fangs-63, physically compare the dimensions again and test the heavier 3X rigging.
Fangs-63 UA #8 is the right choice when a compact hardbait matches the proportions of the smallest size in the range and you also need the strength reserve of a 3X construction. The reference example of 60 mm and 7–9 g provides a starting point, but the final decision must always be based on the original rigging, body width, point clearance and a test of the lure’s action. If the 3X hook unnecessarily suppresses the lure’s movement, Fangs-62 in the same size or the differently constructed Sting-32 MT is the logical alternative.
Frequently asked questions – BKK Fangs-63 UA #8
Is #8 the smallest size in the BKK Fangs-63 UA range?
Yes. #8 is the smallest size offered in the Fangs-63 UA range. It is intended for compact lures that can carry the more robust 3X construction without an unwanted change in action.
Are 60 mm and 7–9 g fixed limits for size #8?
No. They are a specific reference example for sinking stickbaits, not a universal range. Body width, original hook, buoyancy, split ring, number of hook hangers and retrieve style also determine the correct choice.
When should I choose the larger Fangs-63 UA #6 instead of #8?
Choose #6 when the points of #8 remain too close to the lure’s sides or the hook does not provide enough working gape. Always compare #6 with the original rigging and check the lure’s action in the water after replacement.
How does Fangs-63 UA #8 differ from Fangs-62 UA #8?
Fangs-63 has a more robust 3X construction, while Fangs-62 belongs to the 2X class and usually adds less weight to a sensitive lure. The same size number does not guarantee the same dimensions or weight.
What role does Sting-32 MT play compared with Fangs-63 UA #8?
Sting-32 MT is a 2X alternative for freshwater and light inshore use, with an inward-turned Combat Point and a matt finish. Fangs-63 offers 3X construction, different geometry and an Ultra-Antirust coating.
Can a 3X treble hook in size #8 change the action of a small hardbait?
Yes. Compared with a lighter original hook, it can change the centre of gravity, buoyancy and sink rate. Test the lure after replacement and also check that the two trebles do not lock together or catch the body.
How should I care for Fangs-63 UA #8 after saltwater use?
Rinse it with fresh water, allow it to dry completely and inspect the points, barbs, eye, coating and split ring. Store hooks with an Ultra-Antirust coating separately from lead items.
