The Lyman Digital Lead Thermometer 2867797, listed here as Casting Therm, checks casting alloy temperature. Its 6-inch probe is 152.4 mm long, approximately 15 cm. It provides access to the bath while keeping your hand farther from the molten surface.
The display switches between °C and °F, with a Hold button to retain a reading. Hold freezes the displayed value rather than continuing to show temperature changes; return to live measurement when monitoring the bath.
Use the thermometer to observe cooling after adding an ingot and to repeat conditions with the same mould and alloy. Wrinkled surfaces or incomplete details can have several causes, including mould temperature, cleanliness, venting and pouring technique. Raising the heat alone is not a universal remedy.
Practical procedure
- Prepare the power supply, select units and check the permitted range in the supplied instructions.
- Use a clean, dry probe and immerse only the designated measuring section. Protect the body and connection from heat.
- Measure within the bath without resting the probe against the wall or bottom, which can distort the reading.
- Wait for the reading to stabilise, use Hold if needed and record the result.
It is useful with equipment such as the RCBS Easy-Melt 240 V with its digital controller. This is a measuring instrument rather than a controller; it does not switch the heater or replace furnace safety devices.
Power is supplied by one 9 V battery. The supplier lists a −50 to 1000 °C measuring range, up to 2.5 readings per second and up to 200 hours of battery life. Battery life varies with use and battery condition. Check whether a battery is included with the particular delivery. Follow the supplied manual for range, accuracy and operating limits; probe length alone does not establish suitability for every deep vessel.
Use dry metal and dry tools. Water or moisture can cause molten metal to spatter violently. Wear eye protection, heat-resistant gloves, protective clothing and closed footwear. Provide effective extraction or ventilation and keep food, drinks, children and pregnant people away. Lead and contaminated dust are toxic. Wash your hands after work, clean surfaces and dispose of residues appropriately.
