The Lyman Lead Pot 2867795 is a separate cast iron vessel for melting and pouring lead. Its stated 10 lb capacity is approximately 4.5 kg. The pouring lip helps direct metal and the flat bottom supports stable positioning on a suitable surface.
It has no built-in heater, thermostat or bottom-pour valve. A suitable external heat source is required. The original general reference to any heat source does not establish safe use on every stove; verify support, load capacity and the heating arrangement.
The capacity is the mass of lead, not a volume in litres. Leave sufficient room for safe handling. Adding metal cools the bath, so allow it to melt completely and stabilise before continuing.
Practical procedure
- Choose a stable non-combustible workspace and a heat source suitable for a cast iron melting vessel.
- Use clean, completely dry metal of known composition and follow both the vessel and heater instructions.
- Take metal with suitable dry tools and check the charge before pouring.
- Switch off the heat and allow everything to cool safely before moving or cleaning it.

Use dry metal and dry tools. Water or moisture can cause molten metal to spatter violently. Wear eye protection, heat-resistant gloves, protective clothing and closed footwear. Provide effective extraction or ventilation and keep food, drinks, children and pregnant people away. Lead and contaminated dust are toxic. Wash your hands after work, clean surfaces and dispose of residues appropriately.
