Product detailed description

SaBoFlex Aqua Blue is a concentrated pigment paste for colouring plastisol when making soft-plastic fishing lures. It gives clear base plastisol an aqua-blue to turquoise shade with a pearlescent metallic effect. This is a colour concentrate designed to be mixed into plastisol – not ready-to-use plastisol, an airbrush paint or a surface coating.

Aqua Blue belongs to the SaBoFlex Pearls/Metallics effect range. It is not the same as Standard Blue, Fluo Blue or Transparent Blue: these names refer to different product ranges, and their optical properties should not automatically be attributed to Aqua Blue. The finished shade also depends on the amount of colour used, the base plastisol, the thickness of the lure, other additives and the lighting conditions. The colour of the concentrate in the bottle should therefore not be treated as an exact guide to the appearance of the finished casting.

The correct method for this SaBoFlex colour is to add it drop by drop to hot plastisol. Before processing, uncoloured transparent base plastisol appears milky or cloudy, making it difficult to judge the colour intensity accurately. Once it has been heated to the clear working state specified by its manufacturer, you can see the change after each small addition and build up the colour gradually.

We do not specify a fixed number of drops per 100 g. Drop size varies with the dispensing nozzle, while the finished shade also depends on the particular plastisol and the thickness of the casting. Start with a small amount: a shade that is too light can be intensified, but colour that has already been added cannot be removed. For repeatable results, record the quantity of plastisol, the colour dose and all other additives used.

Mix the colour first, then dose it

SAF workshop tip for easier homogenisation: we recommend placing 2 clean, completely dry stainless-steel mixing balls in the 50 g bottle and 2–3 in the 250 g bottle. They help redistribute settled pigment more quickly and make the paste uniform before dosing. Do not use lead balls or ordinary steel that may corrode. Mixing balls are not included with the colour.

  1. First stir the base plastisol thoroughly from the bottom, then heat it to the clear working state specified by its manufacturer; do not overheat it.
  2. Shake or stir Aqua Blue thoroughly before dosing so that its colour and consistency are uniform throughout the bottle, with no settled layer remaining at the bottom.
  3. Add a small amount of colour drop by drop to the hot plastisol, then stir the mixture slowly but thoroughly.
  4. Check the shade on a thin, cooled drop or a test casting. Build up the intensity gradually with further drops.
  5. Add glitter only at the end. Record the proven ratio of colour to plastisol so that you can reproduce the shade in your next batch.

Complete soft bait making range and workshop guide

Aqua Blue can be used as the main colour of the entire lure, as a separate layer in a laminated lure, or for a contrasting back, flank or belly. Suitable heat-resistant glitter can be used to adjust the size and colour of the reflections; however, according to the instructions for this colour, glitter should be added only after the plastisol has been coloured. Test every new combination in a small trial batch first.

The 50 g option is practical for trying the shade for the first time, making smaller batches or equipping a workshop that uses several colours. The 250 g bottle makes more sense for regular production or repeated use of the same recipe, offers better value per gram and is easier to homogenise by shaking because of the greater mass of its contents. The concentration and the plastisol-colouring method remain the same for both pack sizes.

Storage and packaging appearance

The pigment paste and base plastisol are not the same material and should not be treated identically in storage. In SAF workshop experience, Aqua Blue remains easier to work with in cooler conditions than plastisol itself, but the manufacturer does not publish an exact minimum storage temperature. The colour should therefore not be regarded as frost-resistant. Store it upright, tightly closed and dry at a stable room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat sources and frost. If the sealed bottle has become cold, allow it to return naturally to room temperature before opening, then shake it thoroughly. Do not warm it on a radiator, hot plate or in a microwave oven.

Packaging notice: Especially after transport, a light oily film may appear around the thread or leave a mark on the label, even when the bottle is closed. If there is no visible loss of contents, this surface trace does not affect the use of the colour; we apologise for any marking of the label. After dosing, wipe the bottle neck and thread, retighten the cap firmly and store the bottle upright, ideally in a washable tray or sealed bag.

Working safely with hot plastisol

  • Hot plastisol can cause severe burns. Wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, clothing that covers your arms and legs, and closed footwear.
  • Work on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Ensure effective ventilation, ideally with local exhaust ventilation directly at the source. Follow the safety and temperature instructions provided by the plastisol manufacturer and do not overheat the mixture.
  • If the safety data sheet for the plastisol being used, or an assessment of the working conditions, requires respiratory protection, select a mask and filter suitable for the specific substances and conditions. An ordinary particulate dust mask may not protect against gases and vapours.
  • The container, dispensing nozzle and mixing tools must be clean and completely dry. Prevent water and other unsuitable liquids from coming into contact with hot plastisol.
  • Close the bottle tightly after use, keep it out of reach of children and follow the current product label and safety data sheet.

Frequently asked questions about SaBoFlex Aqua Blue

Should Aqua Blue be added to cold or hot plastisol?

This particular SaBoFlex colour should be shaken thoroughly and then added drop by drop to hot plastisol. In practice, it is best to work with a clear, heated base because the change in colour intensity becomes visible immediately after mixing. Always follow the specific instructions supplied with other brands and types of colourant.

How many drops should I use per 100 g of plastisol?

The manufacturer does not specify one universal ratio for Aqua Blue. Start with several small additions, stir thoroughly after each one and check the shade on a cooled sample. Once you achieve the desired result, record the exact quantity of plastisol and the colour dose for the next batch.

What will the finished lure look like?

Aqua Blue produces an aqua-blue to turquoise shade with a pearlescent metallic sheen. Its intensity and, to some extent, its overall visual character vary according to the dose, the base plastisol, the thickness of the lure, any added glitter and the lighting. A cooled test casting – rather than the colour in the bottle – is therefore the best guide to the final result.

Is Aqua Blue fluorescent, UV-active or transparent?

These properties are not documented for Aqua Blue and cannot be inferred from the shade name. If you specifically require a fluorescent or transparent blue, choose a colour from the Fluo Blue or Transparent Blue range. For a UV effect, use a product for which the manufacturer explicitly states this property.

Can I add glitter to the coloured plastisol?

Yes. First mix Aqua Blue to the required intensity, then add the glitter at the end. Use only glitter designed for plastisol processing temperatures and test every new combination in a small batch first.

How should I store Aqua Blue, and what does an oily mark on the label mean?

Store the bottle upright, tightly closed and dry at a stable room temperature, protected from frost. If it has become very cold, leave it sealed and allow it to return naturally to room temperature, then mix the contents thoroughly again. With this type of pigment paste, a light oily film may appear around the thread or leave a surface mark on the label, especially after transport. If there is no visible loss of contents, this trace does not affect the use of the colour.
