Product detailed description

Sportex Magnus Mastergrade Travel RS-2 solves the problem of packing a separate long shore rod and a separate shorter boat-spinning rod. SPORTEX lists working lengths of 300 and 240 cm for model MT3005. The longer configuration provides greater reach from rocks, piers or beaches; 240 cm is easier to handle on a boat while remaining long enough for active casting around ledges, shallows and vegetation.

The five-piece Helicore blank uses high-performance Toray T1100 carbon to combine a slim diameter, fast response and progressive power transfer. Stainless FUJI KW SIC guides are protected for saltwater use, the FUJI DPS seat secures a spinning reel and the Duplon handle provides reliable grip during casting and the fight. A rubber cross-gimbal butt and SEAGUIDE D-Hook keeper complete the Mastergrade specification.

The nominal 90 g figure has a manufacturer-stated 38–110 g tolerance. This is more informative than the single figure in the product name: the lower end suits smaller metal jigs, slim minnows and stickbaits, the middle is a versatile saltwater-spinning zone, and the upper part covers heavier compact lures in current. Always calculate actual lure weight after hooks and rings are fitted.

In the 300 cm configuration the rod suits shore casting from beaches, piers or rocks where line must be held above surf and a lure controlled at distance. At 240 cm it is more practical from a boat when casting at schools of smaller tuna, bonito, jacks or other pelagic fish. It is not a heavy tuna or GT rod; its strength is travel versatility inside the 38–110 g tolerance.

For fast descent and long casting, use pilks and compact speed jigs; for active work in the upper water layer, explore saltwater stickbaits. A slim compact lure usually casts more efficiently than a bulky profile of the same weight. Match the choice to the rod configuration, clear casting space and target fish.

Mastergrade Travel is not a substitute for a short heavy jigging rod. It is more versatile on the coast than Magnus Jigging and casts more effectively from a boat than Travel Boat, but regular vertical work with 150–300 g lures calls for Magnus Mastergrade Jigging or Spiral Jigging. For maximum shore reach and frequent casting, Shore Jig & Cast is more specialised.

The rod has five pieces and an 82 cm transport length. Assemble the two working lengths only in the manufacturer-intended configuration and according to the supplied section arrangement; never omit a different section at random. Keep joints clean, align them correctly and check guide orientation during fishing.

Variant comparison — Sportex Magnus Mastergrade Travel RS-2 5-Piece Saltwater Rod

Version Model Length Weight / power class Pieces Transport length Rod weight Guides Reel / reel seat Recommended use
300/240 cm / 90 g / Travel – Spinning Reel MT3005 300 / 240 cm 90 g; tolerance 38–110 g 5 82 cm 363 g 10 Spinning reel / FUJI DPS Travel spinning from shore and boat; 300 cm for reach, 240 cm for handling.

This product has one MT3005 model but two manufacturer-listed working lengths. Start with 240 cm on a boat or in restricted space; use 300 cm from shore and for longer casts. The 38–110 g tolerance makes it a travel spinning all-rounder, not a rod for lowering heavy rigs into deep water.

The weight of a hand-finished rod may vary by up to 8% due to manufacturing tolerance. Always assess gram ratings and pound classes together with lure shape and resistance, depth, current, drift speed, line diameter and reel-drag setting.

A carbon blank conducts electricity. Never use the rod during a thunderstorm or near overhead power lines. Maintain a safe distance from electrical conductors during transport and assembly; contact between a carbon rod and a live source can cause a life-threatening injury.

After every saltwater session, remove the reel and rinse the rod with a gentle stream of fresh water. Wipe it down, separate the sections and let everything dry completely. Regularly inspect guide inserts and frames, section joints, the reel-seat thread, handle and butt. Do not allow salt to dry in the thread or around the guides, and do not use a pressure washer.

SPORTEX provides a 10-year extended manufacturer's warranty on the blank. Activation requires registration of the rod within 30 days of purchase and retention of the receipt. The extended warranty applies to the blank; other components and damage caused by overloading, impact or improper handling remain subject to the standard terms.

Frequently asked questions — Sportex Magnus Mastergrade Travel RS-2 5-Piece Saltwater Rod

Why does the manufacturer list 300/240 cm?

Model MT3005 is designed around two working lengths. The 300 cm setup helps shore casting, while 240 cm is more practical from a boat. Use only the manufacturer-intended section arrangement.

Is the rod suitable from a boat?

Yes, particularly in the 240 cm setup for active spinning. Shorter Mastergrade Jigging, Spiral Jigging or Seamaster Travel Boat rods are better for heavy vertical jigs and deep-water rigs.

Which lures fit the 38–110 g tolerance?

Smaller metal jigs, slim minnows and stickbaits at the lower end, versatile saltwater spinning in the middle and heavier compact lures at the top. Calculate actual fitted weight and resistance during the retrieve.

Which fish suit this travel all-rounder?

Depending on the destination: pollack and coalfish, coastal predators, bonito, jacks and small to medium pelagic fish. Choose Tuna Spin for deliberately targeting larger tuna and GT Popper for GT.

Which reel should I use?

Use a suitably sized saltwater spinning reel with a durable drag and line capacity for the destination. The rod has a FUJI DPS seat and is not designed for a multiplier reel.

Are five pieces a disadvantage while fighting fish?

A short-section rod requires clean, carefully assembled joints, but it is engineered as a complete system. Full seating, rotation checks and staying within the stated tolerance are the important points.

How is the 10-year warranty activated?

Register the rod with SPORTEX within 30 days of purchase and retain the receipt. The extended warranty applies to the blank, not automatically to guides, reel seat and handle.
