VMC 6169 BN is a specialised large jig hook designed for casting heavy saltwater jig heads. SAF offers it in size #16/0. Its robust round-wire construction and Black Nickel finish are suited to large soft plastic lures and heavy jig heads used for deep-water saltwater fishing.

With VMC 6169, you are not choosing between a conventional size range as you would with smaller jig hooks. Size #16/0 forms the basis of a specific system for large lures and heavy molds. The key factors are compatibility with the mold cavity, the size of the soft plastic lure and the jig-head weight required for the actual depth, current and drift.

Heavy jig heads are particularly useful when a large soft plastic lure must reach the working depth quickly and remain under control despite boat movement or stronger current. A 300, 350, 400 or 500 g jig head is therefore not automatically a “better” or “stronger” option – the correct weight depends on the actual fishing conditions.

VMC 6169 BN #16/0 – a large saltwater jig hook for heavy jig heads and correspondingly large soft plastic lures.

F148 – 300 / 350 g – a mold for heavy saltwater jig heads fitted with VMC 6169 #16/0.

F214 – 400 / 500 g – an even heavier option for deep water, stronger drift and situations where a large lure must be kept at the required depth.

When selecting a soft plastic lure, place the hook alongside its body and check the actual hook-point position. With a hook of this size, the shank must not extend unnecessarily far into the active section of the lure, while enough free space must remain between the lure body and the hook bend for a reliable hook-up.

A large soft plastic lure does not by itself determine the required jig-head weight. Depending on depth and drift, the same lure may be used with a 300 or 500 g head. The hook primarily determines how the lure is rigged, while jig-head weight determines how effectively the complete setup reaches and remains in the required depth.

VMC 6169 BN is designed primarily for anglers who cast their own heavy saltwater jig heads. With castings of this size, it is especially important to test the hook position inside the mold before pouring lead. The shank and eye must sit correctly in the prepared grooves and the mold must close completely without placing pressure on the hook.

For VMC 6169 #16/0, SAF offers matching molds for F148 300 / 350 g and F214 400 / 500 g. These are specific hook-and-mold combinations, so there is no need to estimate compatibility purely from the appearance or dimensions of another large jig hook.

Always test the exact hook-and-cavity combination dry before casting. With heavy jig heads, even a difference of a few millimetres in shank or eye position can create a much bigger problem than with small jigs, because the mold contains a large volume of molten metal and must close correctly and completely before pouring.

A finished jig head fitted with VMC 6169 #16/0 is intended for large saltwater soft plastic lures – especially large shads, twister-style lures and other soft baits used in deeper water. Typical applications include Norwegian and other northern saltwater fisheries, where heavy setups are used for species such as large cod and halibut.

With large soft plastic lures, also check how securely the bait is held on the jig head before lowering the setup. A large lure creates considerable resistance during descent, presentation and a strike. If the jig-head design does not provide sufficient mechanical bait retention, the connection between the head and the soft plastic can be reinforced with a suitable adhesive.

The Black Nickel finish is identified by the BN designation. After saltwater fishing, rinse the finished jig head with fresh water, allow it to dry thoroughly and check the hook point, eye and surface condition before the next use.

VMC 6169 is not a universal substitute for a large size from another jig-hook series. Shank, bend and eye geometry must match the specific mold. If you are casting smaller or lighter jig heads, browse other designs and sizes in our main jig hooks category.

Frequently asked questions – VMC 6169 BN

Which VMC 6169 size does SAF offer?

SAF offers VMC 6169 BN in size #16/0. It is a very large jig hook designed primarily for heavy saltwater jig heads and large soft plastic lures.

What does BN mean on VMC 6169?

BN refers to the Black Nickel finish.

What jig-head weights is VMC 6169 #16/0 designed for?

At SAF, we use it with molds for very heavy saltwater jig heads. Mold F148 produces 300 and 350 g heads, while mold F214 produces 400 and 500 g heads.

Is VMC 6169 #16/0 compatible with mold F148?

Yes. Mold F148 is designed for 300 / 350 g jig heads and lists VMC 6169 #16/0 as the compatible hook.

Is VMC 6169 #16/0 compatible with mold F214?

Yes. Mold F214 produces 400 / 500 g jig heads and is designed for VMC 6169 #16/0.

How do I choose between a 300, 350, 400 and 500 g jig head?

Select the weight according to depth, current strength, boat drift, lure size and presentation. The aim is not automatically to use the heaviest head, but the lightest weight that still allows the lure to reach the working depth and remain under control.

What soft plastic lures are suitable for VMC 6169 #16/0?

The hook is intended for large saltwater soft plastic lures. Before rigging, place the hook alongside the actual lure and check the hook-point exit position, free space inside the bend and whether the shank leaves the active part of the lure free to move.

Is VMC 6169 intended only for Norway?

No. It is designed for heavy saltwater jigging setups in general. Norway is a typical application because of deeper fishing grounds, drift and fishing for large saltwater predators, but the actual conditions determine whether this type of setup is appropriate.

Can I replace VMC 6169 with another hook in size 16/0?

Not automatically. The same numerical size does not guarantee identical shank length, bend geometry, wire diameter or eye position. Always verify the actual fit of the specific hook inside the mold before casting.
