VMC 6198 TI
VMC 6198 TI jig hooks combine a 60° bend with a tin-plated finish for casting your own saltwater jig heads. The deep hybrid bend provides room for bulkier soft plastics, while forged high-carbon steel and a Needle Sharp point combine strength with a sharp point for the hookset.

The VMC 6198 TI Heavy 60° Hybrid Jig Hook is designed for casting your own jig heads for saltwater lure fishing and vertical jigging with soft plastics. Whether you fish paddle tails or slender sandeel-style baits, it lets you match the hook to the lure’s body and the head weight to the depth, current and drift. Its protective finish is intended for use in salt water.
TI stands for Tin: a tin-plated finish. This coating protects the hook’s steel core during saltwater use. In a suitable mould, you can choose TI as the saltwater equivalent of VMC 7161 BN in the same hook size. This allows you to keep the same mould and select the finish to suit freshwater or saltwater fishing.
French manufacturer VMC combines high-carbon steel, a forged construction and a Needle Sharp point in this series. Forging helps the hook resist opening under load, while the sharp point helps initiate penetration during the hookset. Choosing the hook before casting means choosing the component that will carry the load when you play a fish.
Room for deeper-bodied soft plastics – the deep hybrid bend accommodates bulkier lure bodies while leaving space for the hook point to become exposed during a take. What matters is the clearance remaining after rigging, not simply the lure’s overall length.
The 60° bend towards the eye helps determine the position of the line attachment within the jig head. Line tension acts through the eye, and its position relative to the centre of gravity affects how the rig tilts during the retrieve. The head’s shape and weight, the soft plastic, the current and your retrieve all contribute to the lure’s action.
For casting, choose a jig head mould designed to accept this hook. Match the hook size to the lure’s body and the mould’s specifications; a heavier head for deeper water does not automatically require a longer shank. After saltwater fishing, rinse your finished jigs in fresh water and let them dry thoroughly before storage.
Frequently asked questions about VMC 6198 TI
What advantage does the TI finish offer in salt water?
Tin plating provides the steel core with a protective surface for saltwater use. Rinsing and drying the hook after fishing remain part of normal care.
Can TI be used in the same mould as VMC 7161 BN?
Yes, in a suitable mould with the same hook size. You can choose the BN finish for freshwater fishing or the tin-plated TI finish for saltwater use.
Why is a deep bend useful for bulkier soft plastics?
It provides room for a deeper lure body and allows that body to compress during a take. The soft plastic must still leave sufficient clearance in the bend and must not cover the hook point.
How do I choose a hook for a sandeel-style soft bait?
Compare the length and depth of the lure’s solid body with the hook, and choose an appropriate point exit position. Leave the flexible rear section free to move and make sure the hook size is compatible with the mould.
Is a tin-plated hook made from stainless steel?
The core is high-carbon steel protected by a tin coating. Rinse and dry your jigs after fishing, then check the point and the condition of the finish before using them again.
