Gamakatsu JIG 22
Gamakatsu Jig 22 is a classic 90° jig hook with a round bend and Nickel finish, designed for casting your own jig heads and fishing with soft plastic lures. SAF offers sizes #2, #1 and 1/0–5/0, covering smaller lures and lighter setups through to larger soft baits for predatory fish.
Gamakatsu Jig 22 is a classic jig hook with a 90° eye and round bend, designed primarily for making jig heads and fishing with soft plastic lures. The range covers sizes #2, #1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0, allowing you to rig anything from smaller minnows and shads to considerably larger soft baits used for predatory fish.
Do not choose jig-hook size according to jig-head weight alone. The main factors are the length and body depth of the lure, the point where the hook should exit the bait and the amount of free space available within the hook bend. The same soft plastic lure can be used with several different jig-head weights depending on depth, current and the required rate of fall.
One of the strengths of the Jig 22 range is its broad size coverage at the smaller end. Sizes #2 and #1 make it possible to build more compact jigging setups for smaller lures, while sizes 1/0 to 5/0 progressively cover standard and larger soft plastic baits. This series uses a Nickel finish.
#2–#1 – smaller soft plastic lures, compact jig heads and setups where shorter hook placement is required.
1/0–3/0 – a versatile range for common minnows, shads and other soft plastic lures used in standard jig fishing.
4/0–5/0 – larger soft plastic lures and setups requiring a longer shank and larger hook bend.
When selecting the size, place the hook alongside the lure and determine in advance where the hook point should exit through its back. A hook that is too short can position the point unnecessarily far forward, while an excessively long shank may extend into the active part of the lure and restrict its action. Use the numerical size as a guide and always make the final choice by matching the hook directly to the specific lure.
With deeper or wider-bodied soft baits, also check the free space inside the hook bend. Once rigged, there must be enough clearance between the lure body and the hook for a reliable hook-up. Two soft baits with the same overall length may therefore require different Jig 22 sizes because of differences in their body profile.
Gamakatsu Jig 22 is also suitable for anglers who cast their own jig heads. Before serial casting, place the exact hook size into the mold without lead and check the fit. The shank and eye must sit correctly in the prepared grooves and both halves of the mold must close completely without resistance.
A 90° eye does not mean that all jig hooks with the same eye angle are interchangeable. Different hook series may vary in shank length, hook gap, bend position, wire diameter or the distance between the eye and the hook axis. Compatibility should therefore always be checked for the exact hook size and the exact mold cavity.
This also applies when comparing it with Gamakatsu Jig 90. Both series use a 90° eye orientation, but Jig 22 has its own geometry, size range and Nickel finish. The same numerical size therefore does not automatically mean identical dimensions or the same fit inside a mold.
For making your own jig heads, browse our range of jig head molds. Before casting, always work with the exact combination of mold, jig-head weight and hook size rather than relying only on the general 90° hook specification.
Each Gamakatsu Jig 22 size is listed as a separate product, making it easier to match the hook precisely to your lure and jig mold. Other hook geometries, sizes and finishes can be found in our main jig hooks category.
Frequently asked questions – Gamakatsu Jig 22
Which Gamakatsu Jig 22 sizes does SAF offer?
The range includes sizes #2, #1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0. Each size is listed as a separate product.
How do I choose the correct Jig 22 size for a soft plastic lure?
Place the hook directly alongside the lure and check the hook-point exit position, shank length, body depth and free space within the hook bend. The overall lure length alone is not enough to determine the correct hook size.
Does jig-head weight determine the hook size?
No. Jig-head weight is selected mainly according to depth, current, rate of fall and presentation style. Hook size should primarily match the soft plastic lure being used.
Is Gamakatsu Jig 22 suitable for casting your own jig heads?
Yes. Before casting, always check the exact hook size directly in the mold. The hook must sit correctly in the prepared grooves and the mold must close completely.
Is Gamakatsu Jig 22 compatible with every mold designed for 90° jig hooks?
No. Eye angle is only one element of hook geometry. Shank length, bend shape, wire diameter, hook gap and eye position may differ, so compatibility must always be verified directly in the specific mold.
What is the main difference between Gamakatsu Jig 22 and Jig 90?
Both series use a 90° eye orientation, but they differ in geometry, size range and finish. Jig 22 is offered from size #2 to 5/0 and uses a Nickel finish, while Jig 90 is a separate series with its own dimensions and construction.
What finish does Gamakatsu Jig 22 use?
Gamakatsu Jig 22 in this European series is supplied with a Nickel finish.
