Torpedo sea jig heads

Torpedo sea jig heads are specialised jig heads for longer and narrower soft baits, saltwater spinning in Norway, faster sinking, more stable lure control and better contact with the bait in current or during drift. They make the most sense with narrow-profile ZOOM Baits, but they also work very well with other longer soft plastics of a similar shape.

Torpedo sea jig heads are specialised jig heads for situations where a standard soft bait jig head is no longer enough. Their main purpose is to work with longer and narrower soft lures, where you need faster sinking, more stable tracking and better control of the bait in current, depth or drift.

The torpedo shape helps the lure reach the working depth faster and keeps it running more calmly in line. In saltwater spinning in Norway, this makes sense especially around edges, kelp, current, deeper water, boat drift and shore fishing situations where a longer soft bait has to stay stable even when depth or drift speed increases.

These jig heads have a very strong connection with ZOOM Baits. Longer and slimmer profiles such as G-Tail, Magnum II or Ol’ Monster need a jig head that does not make the front of the lure unnecessarily bulky, while still keeping the right balance between head, hook and soft bait length. That is why torpedo jig heads are so often used together with ZOOM Baits in practice.

This does not mean they are made only for one brand. The most important factors are the shape, length and profile of the soft bait. Torpedo heads make sense with worms, eel profiles, sandeel-style lures, slimmer shads and other longer soft plastics where you want to keep a clean lure axis and good contact during retrieve or drift.

In this category you will find smaller and lighter torpedo jig heads as well as stronger models such as SAF Bullet Torpedo. Smaller versions make sense for shorter soft baits, lighter presentation and situations where you do not need such a long hook. Larger Bullet models with a 7/0 hook are a more logical choice for longer saltwater soft baits, where a smaller hook can feel undersized and may not match the length of the lure properly.

The way the soft bait is fixed to the head is also important. Some torpedo jig heads use a classic collar, while more advanced models use a lower reverse bait keeper. With long and narrow soft baits, a lower bait keeper can be a major advantage because it helps hold the lure in place without unnecessarily tearing the nose of the bait when it is pushed all the way to the head. The lure sits cleaner, deforms less and the whole setup looks more natural.

Choose the weight according to depth, current strength, drift speed, soft bait size and the way you want to fish the lure. Lighter torpedo heads make sense in shallower water, calmer conditions and slower presentation. Heavier versions help when you need faster sinking, better lure contact and more precise control in the water column or close to the bottom.

The colour of the jig head also has a practical role. Red versions work as a stronger contrast point at the head of the lure, while black heads are mainly about silhouette, compact profile and a clean connection with darker soft baits. In saltwater spinning, colour is not just about visibility – it is about how the whole setup looks in the water, under specific light conditions and with a specific retrieve style.

Within the SAF structure, this category is kept separate on purpose. It does not cover all saltwater jig heads in general, but a specific type designed for longer slim soft baits, faster sinking and more precise control. If you are building a setup around ZOOM Baits, longer soft plastics or selected slimmer soft lures from the SAF PLASTI-X range, this is the right category.

Frequently asked questions – Torpedo sea jig heads

When should I choose a Torpedo head instead of a classic jig head?

Choose a Torpedo head mainly when you are fishing a longer and narrower soft bait and need faster sinking, more stable tracking and better lure control in current, depth or drift. With slim saltwater soft baits, it often feels more natural than a rounder or bulkier jig head shape.

What soft baits are Torpedo jig heads suitable for?

They work best with longer and narrower soft baits – especially ZOOM Baits, worms, eel profiles, sandeel-style lures, slimmer shads and similar soft plastics. The key factor is the lure profile, length and retrieve style, not only the brand name.

Are Torpedo jig heads only for ZOOM Baits?

No. ZOOM Baits are a very strong and natural match for this category because their long slim profiles work extremely well with torpedo jig heads. However, Torpedo heads can also be used with other soft lures of a similar shape when you want faster sinking, a cleaner lure axis and better control of the whole setup.

What is the difference between a smaller Torpedo head and SAF Bullet Torpedo?

Smaller torpedo jig heads make sense for shorter soft baits, lighter presentation and more delicate setups. SAF Bullet Torpedo is a stronger option for longer saltwater soft baits, where the larger 7/0 hook better matches the lure length and gives the whole setup a more reliable functional balance.

Why does hook size matter with longer soft baits?

With a longer saltwater soft bait, the hook needs to match the length and profile of the lure. A hook that is too small can feel undersized on 15 cm and longer baits and may not provide enough contact on the strike. A larger hook often fits the lure size and saltwater spinning style much better.

Which Torpedo head weight should I choose?

Choose the weight according to depth, current, drift speed, soft bait size and retrieve style. Lighter versions work well in calmer water and shallower areas, while heavier torpedo heads help when you need the lure to sink faster and stay under better control.

Is red, black or natural colour better?

It depends on the lure and conditions. A red head works as a stronger contrast point, while a black head is mainly about silhouette and a compact connection with darker soft baits. Natural or less visible colours make sense when you want a softer and less aggressive presentation.

What fish and situations are Torpedo jig heads made for?

Torpedo jig heads are mainly suitable for saltwater spinning in Norway, fishing longer soft baits for pollack, cod and other saltwater predators. Stronger models with larger hooks can also provide enough reserve when you come into contact with a smaller halibut, but the main role of this category is precise control of longer soft lures.
