Product detailed description

Sportex Magnus Mastergrade Tuna Spin RS-2 is designed for active offshore spinning where fish are searched across open water with metal jigs, stickbaits, pencil baits and poppers. Compared with a dedicated GT Popper it is more versatile throughout the water column, yet retains the backbone and components required for tuna, jacks, wahoo and other powerful pelagic predators.

The Toray T1100 Helicore blank transfers power quickly during the strike and works progressively during the fight. Eight stainless FUJI KW SIC guides are protected against saltwater corrosion, a robust FUJI DPS seat secures the spinning reel and the Duplon handle supports repeated casting. A rubber cross-gimbal butt assists bracing, while the SEAGUIDE D-Hook stores the hook safely.

The 235 cm / 150 g model has a 62–174 g tolerance, weighs 367 g and is more practical for frequent casting with medium lures. The 250 cm / 200 g model has a 95–258 g tolerance, weighs 403 g and uses its longer lever for extra range and power with bulkier lures. For long days without a genuine need for 200 g-class lures, the lighter model is more sensible; choose the stronger version by actual lure weight and target fish.

For metal and hard lures, start with saltwater lures for Norway and tropical fishing. Factory trebles can be upgraded with correctly sized BKK Raptor-Z heavy-duty hooks or BKK Lone Diablo singles and strong rings. For tuna, braid, leader, knots and hardware must handle the same pressure as the rod.

When casting at a feeding school, compact metal jigs and sinking stickbaits for saltwater spinning are practical because they reach the required distance and depth quickly. Use a popper or floating pencil bait when tuna are active on the surface. Actual fitted weight must remain inside the rod tolerance and all hardware must match the intended drag pressure.

Tuna Spin is not intended for prolonged vertical lowering of a heavy jig below the boat; a 180–190 cm Mastergrade Jigging or Spiral Jigging rod is more ergonomic for that. It is also less specialised for repeated aggressive popping than GT Popper. Its strength is versatile offshore casting and controlling fish in open water.

The lure tolerance assumes a smooth casting technique and suitable terminal setup. With a heavy stickbait or metal jig, inspect the knot, leader and rings before every casting sequence. Do not set the drag only by the line maximum; it must match rod angle, hook strength and the space around the boat.

Variant comparison — Sportex Magnus Mastergrade Tuna Spin RS-2 2-Piece Rod

Version Model Length Weight / power class Pieces Transport length Rod weight Guides Reel / reel seat Recommended use
235 cm / 150 g / Standard – Spinning Reel TS2318 235 cm 150 g; tolerance 62–174 g 2 170 cm 367 g 8 Spinning reel / FUJI DPS More versatile offshore spinning, medium metal jigs and stickbaits, with less casting fatigue.
250 cm / 200 g / Standard – Spinning Reel TS2519 250 cm 200 g; tolerance 95–258 g 2 185 cm 403 g 8 Spinning reel / FUJI DPS Larger lures, longer casts and more reserve for big tuna and pelagic fish.

For versatile offshore spinning and long casting sessions, 235 cm / 150 g is the starting choice. Select 250 cm / 200 g when lures regularly exceed 100 g and additional reach and reserve are required. The stronger model's extra 36 g is noticeable during all-day casting.

The weight of a hand-finished rod may vary by up to 8% due to manufacturing tolerance. Always assess gram ratings and pound classes together with lure shape and resistance, depth, current, drift speed, line diameter and reel-drag setting.

A carbon blank conducts electricity. Never use the rod during a thunderstorm or near overhead power lines. Maintain a safe distance from electrical conductors during transport and assembly; contact between a carbon rod and a live source can cause a life-threatening injury.

After every saltwater session, remove the reel and rinse the rod with a gentle stream of fresh water. Wipe it down, separate the sections and let everything dry completely. Regularly inspect guide inserts and frames, section joints, the reel-seat thread, handle and butt. Do not allow salt to dry in the thread or around the guides, and do not use a pressure washer.

SPORTEX provides a 10-year extended manufacturer's warranty on the blank. Activation requires registration of the rod within 30 days of purchase and retention of the receipt. The extended warranty applies to the blank; other components and damage caused by overloading, impact or improper handling remain subject to the standard terms.

Frequently asked questions — Sportex Magnus Mastergrade Tuna Spin RS-2 2-Piece Rod

Which model is more versatile?

The 235 cm / 150 g model. Its 62–174 g tolerance covers a broad selection of cast lures and the lower rod weight causes less fatigue during long sessions.

When do I need 250 cm / 200 g?

When lures regularly exceed 100 g, extra casting distance is required and larger tuna or other powerful pelagic fish are deliberately targeted.

Is Tuna Spin suitable for poppers?

Yes for poppers within its tolerance, but GT Popper is more specialised for sustained aggressive work with large poppers. Tuna Spin is more versatile through the water column.

Is it suitable for vertical jigging?

Occasionally, yes, but its length and build focus on casting. Choose shorter Mastergrade Jigging or Spiral Jigging for regular vertical boat work.

Which lures suit tuna fishing?

Compact metal jigs and sinking stickbaits for reaching a feeding school and selected depth quickly; poppers and pencil baits when tuna are active at the surface. Weight and hardware strength must match the selected rod and drag pressure.

Which hooks should I fit to hard lures?

Use BKK Raptor-Z trebles or Lone Diablo singles matched to lure size and action, with suitable rings and leader. Hardware that is too heavy must not ruin lure movement.

Which reel belongs on the rod?

A powerful saltwater spinning reel with a high-quality drag, rigid axle and line capacity suited to the target fish. The rod uses a FUJI DPS seat.
