Westin CudaKid

The Westin CudaKid 180EFS is a slim sinking stickbait measuring 18 cm / 57 g, built for active saltwater fishing. Its extra-fast sink and long-casting profile make it a sharp tool for tropical and subtropical predators hunting baitfish – barracuda, snapper, amberjack and bonito. Five colours are available; below we explain how to work the lure and how to choose the right colour for the conditions.

Westin CudaKid 180EFS is a saltwater sinking stickbait with a long, slim body, a length of 18 cm and a weight of 57 g. It is not an all-round lure for every situation. It is a specific tool for fast, active fishing on predators that chase baitfish in the water column and just below the surface. Its shape and action imitate a juvenile barracuda trying to escape larger hunters, and that fleeing profile is exactly what can trigger reaction strikes from snapper, bluefish, amberjack and adult barracuda.
The 180EFS tag means extra-fast sinking. Unlike floating stickbaits, the CudaKid drops quickly into the strike zone and lets you cover the upper and middle water column without wasting time. The slim body keeps resistance low, helps with long casts and stays controllable in wind, current and broken surface. This matters when you need to reach feeding fish, cover water around a reef edge or keep the lure working properly in moving water.
CudaKid should not be confused with a metal jig or pilker. A jig or pilker is primarily a vertical lure, often fished deeper and closer to the bottom. CudaKid is a hard saltwater stickbait for horizontal work in the water column. You animate it with the rod, let it sink, speed it up again and mix escape movement with pauses. It is not made for deep vertical jigging, heavy bottom fishing or classic deep-sea pilking. Its strength is active fish in the upper and middle layers.
The lure shines in shore casting from rocky coastlines, over reefs, in currents, along drop-offs, from harbour piers and in open water around baitfish schools. It primarily targets tropical and subtropical predators such as barracuda, snapper, bluefish, amberjack, bonito, Spanish mackerel and smaller jacks. In colder waters it can work as a secondary option for pollack, coalfish, mackerel or active cod feeding in the water column, but it is not a substitute for a jig or pilker when the fish are deep or bottom-oriented.
The construction is built for saltwater pressure. The long, slim body is reinforced with full through-wire construction, and the lure is armed with two corrosion-resistant 4X Ultra stainless trebles. In saltwater fishing, weak hooks and poor hardware are usually the first things to fail, especially around reefs, rocks and strong current. If you want to upgrade or replace the hooks, use a strong saltwater treble such as BKK Raptor-Z size #1.
Work the CudaKid actively. A faster retrieve can bring fish in, but the lure performs best when you mix speed with rod action. Use jerk & pause, longer rod sweeps, a count-down sink to the chosen depth, controlled drops and deep walking under the surface. Many strikes come when the lure changes pace, flashes its side or starts to fall after a sharp movement. A straight retrieve can work, but it does not use the full potential of this lure.
Choose the colour by water clarity, light and fish mood. Sardine is the natural baitfish option for general use. Ghost Sardine is a subtle translucent choice for clear water and more cautious fish. Barracuda is the most direct juvenile-barracuda imitation with a long predatory silhouette. Redhead Zebra Glow is made for low light, stained water and situations where glow and contrast help the lure stand out. Zombie Cuda is the aggressive reaction colour with a pink head and strong contrast when you need to provoke a strike.
In practice, it makes sense to carry one natural colour and one trigger colour. Start with Sardine, Ghost Sardine or Barracuda in clear water and bright conditions. Switch to Redhead Zebra Glow or Zombie Cuda when the light drops, the water gets stained, the surface breaks up or fish only follow the lure without committing. CudaKid is not the most universal lure in the box, but in the right situation it is exactly the kind of sinking stickbait that can force a hard reaction strike from a fast saltwater predator.

Westin CudaKid – FAQ
What is the Westin CudaKid?
Westin CudaKid 180EFS is an 18 cm / 57 g extra-fast sinking saltwater stickbait built for long casting and active fishing in the water column. Its shape and action imitate a juvenile barracuda fleeing larger predators.
Which species is the CudaKid designed for?
It is primarily designed for tropical and subtropical predators hunting baitfish – barracuda, snapper, bluefish, amberjack, bonito, Spanish mackerel and smaller jacks. In colder waters it can also work for pollack, coalfish, mackerel or active cod feeding in the water column.
How is CudaKid different from a jig or pilker?
A jig or pilker is mainly a vertical lure, often used deeper and closer to the bottom. CudaKid is a sinking stickbait that works horizontally in the water column. It is animated with the rod, mixed with pauses and controlled sink phases, and aimed at active fish rather than bottom-oriented fishing.
How should I work the Westin CudaKid?
Use an active retrieve with jerks, rod sweeps, pauses and controlled drops. Count it down to the required depth, then work it with speed changes and deep walking under the surface. Most strikes come on a change of pace or during the fall.
Which colour should I choose?
Use Sardine, Ghost Sardine or Barracuda in clear water and natural baitfish situations. Choose Redhead Zebra Glow or Zombie Cuda in low light, stained water, current or when you need a stronger visual trigger. A practical setup is one natural colour and one bright reaction colour.
Does CudaKid make sense in cold-water fishing?
Yes, but only in specific situations. It can work for pollack, coalfish, mackerel or active cod when they are feeding in the water column. It is not the right choice for deep bottom fishing or classic heavy pilking.
Which hooks are suitable for CudaKid?
The lure comes with two corrosion-resistant 4X Ultra stainless trebles. For replacement or stronger saltwater use, choose a robust treble hook such as BKK Raptor-Z size #1. Strong hooks matter when fishing around reefs, rocks and current.
