Product detailed description
BKK Monster Circle 8/0 is a very important working size in the Monster Circle range. Within this series, it represents the first clearly stronger heavy-duty circle hook for larger fillets, chunk bait, smaller to medium dead bait, bigger pieces of baitfish or more robust saltwater bait presentations. It is not as large as the trophy sizes 12/0, 14/0 or 16/0, but it already has enough strength and working space for serious saltwater bait rigs.
In Norwegian fishing, size 8/0 makes great sense for halibut drift rigs with reasonably large bait, bigger cod, ling and situations where smaller sizes such as 5/0 or 6/0 may no longer be ideal. If you are using a larger fillet, a stronger piece of baitfish or a bait that needs more space around the hook, 8/0 is often a very practical step between the smaller universal sizes and the larger trophy hooks from the BKK Monster Circle range.
In global saltwater fishing, BKK Monster Circle 8/0 is suitable for stronger bait rigs targeting fish such as tuna, amberjack, grouper, kingfish, sharks and other saltwater predators, depending on the bait size and the whole setup. It is a size for situations where you no longer want a light hook, but also do not need an extreme big-game hook. It fits drift fishing, bait fishing and more robust dead-bait or live-bait presentations.
A circle hook works differently from a standard J hook. It is not designed for a hard strike, but for steady pressure on the rig. As the fish takes the bait and the setup comes under tension, the hook rotates out of the mouth and tends to catch in the jaw corner. With size 8/0, it is important that the hook is not completely buried in the bait, but also that it is not unnecessarily large compared to the bait being used.
BKK Monster Circle uses Ultra-Antirust coating for saltwater use, a sharp needle point and heavy-duty wire construction designed for strong saltwater species. The straight eye and in-line point geometry support the typical corner-of-mouth principle of a circle hook, where the hook sets in the jaw corner under smooth and controlled pressure.
Choose size 8/0 when you need a strong circle hook for larger bait, but do not want to move into the bigger sizes designed for truly bulky dead bait. For smaller fillets, compact pieces of baitfish and lighter presentations, 5/0 or 6/0 may be the better choice. For larger halibut dead bait, stronger rigs and heavier fish, it makes sense to move up to 10/0 or 12/0.
If you are not sure how circle hooks work, we recommend starting with the Circle Hooks category. To compare more BKK single hook models, use the BKK Single Hooks category. And if you are looking for a version made specifically for drift presentation and reduced rig twisting, also compare it with BKK Monster Circle Drifting Special.
Frequently asked questions – BKK Monster Circle 8/0
What is BKK Monster Circle 8/0 best used for?
Size 8/0 is suitable for larger fillets, chunk bait, smaller to medium dead bait and stronger saltwater bait rigs. In Norway, it makes sense for halibut drift rigs, big cod and ling. Globally, it can be used for fish such as tuna, amberjack, grouper, kingfish or sharks, depending on the bait and setup.
Is BKK Monster Circle 8/0 suitable for halibut fishing in Norway?
Yes. Size 8/0 is a very practical choice for halibut rigs with reasonably large bait. It is not as extreme as 12/0, 14/0 or 16/0, but it already offers enough strength and size for serious dead-bait or drift fishing.
What is the difference between 8/0 and 10/0?
Size 8/0 is more practical for larger, but still relatively compact bait. Size 10/0 fits bulkier dead bait, stronger fillets and larger halibut rigs better. If you want a strong hook without overloading the bait, 8/0 is often a very good compromise.
What bait size should I use with 8/0?
A 8/0 hook suits larger fillets, chunk bait, smaller to medium dead bait or a stronger piece of baitfish. The bait should not cover the point and bend in a way that prevents the circle hook from rotating correctly into the jaw corner during the bite.
Why should I not strike hard with a circle hook?
A circle hook is designed to work under steady pressure. As the fish loads the rig, the hook rotates out of the mouth and catches in the jaw corner. A hard classic strike can reduce this effect, especially when using larger bait and when the hook needs enough room to rotate properly.
