The TETRA APS 100 Black Air Pump is a diaphragm air pump used to fluidise coating powder. A preheated jig head, cheburashka weight or sinker can then be dipped briefly into the aerated layer. It is an aquarium air pump used in fluid-bed coating setups; it does not heat the casting or cure the coating.
Maximum airflow is 100 l/h, power consumption is 2.5 W and the pump has one outlet. Use an airline with a 4 mm internal diameter, commonly designated 4/6 mm. Adjust airflow with the supplied air-control valve. The stated flow is the manufacturer’s rating; the filter, airline and powder fill affect actual fluidisation.
APS 100 is sufficient for powder paint in the standard Amigo Fluid Bed for Lead Coating Paints. It can also supply Medium with powder paint. For a larger fill in Amigo with the extension, we recommend APS 400 with suitable outlet joining and regulation into the single inlet. Choose a stronger air source for XL.
APS 100 is for powder paint, not rubberized coatings. For more air during powder coating, choose the TETRA APS 400 Black Air Pump, which can also supply two Amigo or Medium beds from separate outlets. Rubberized coatings require Hailea; neither APS 100 nor APS 400 lifts them adequately.
Adjust the airflow to the powder’s behaviour. It should move gently and evenly. If it stays still, check that the powder is dry, inspect the airline and filter, and confirm that the coating is suitable. Reduce any airflow that blows powder out. Black and white versions of the same model have the same rated performance.
Recommended workflow
- Place the pump horizontally in a dry, stable, clean location away from hot castings and airborne powder.
- Connect the single outlet to the bed with suitable airline and an air-control valve.
- Add a suitable fill of compatible powder, switch on and increase airflow gradually from a low setting.
- Once fluidisation is even, coat a test piece. Follow the coating instructions for preheating and any final baking.
The pump alone does not determine coat thickness or durability. Clean metal, casting temperature, dipping time and the coating’s curing process also matter. Steady airflow is one part of the complete coating setup.
Safe connection: Follow Tetra’s instructions. Protect the unit from moisture, powder and radiant heat; do not cover it or modify its electrical components. Unplug it before disconnecting airlines or cleaning. Wear eye and hand protection when coating, avoid inhaling dust and follow the coating manufacturer’s instructions.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Can the pump supply rubberized coatings?
No. Neither APS 100 nor APS 400 lifts rubberized coatings adequately. Use Hailea, ideally with XL and optionally the XL extension.
Which beds can APS 100 supply?
Amigo and Medium with powder paints. For a larger fill in Amigo with an extension, we recommend APS 400. APS 100 is not recommended for XL.
Do Black and White have different outputs?
Not within the same model; only the housing colour differs.
Is airline supplied with the pump?
Tetra’s instructions list airline as a separate accessory. Also check the contents of your selected fluid bed.
