Product detailed description

The Mottled Black shade is perfect when you want your lead to “blend in” on gravel, rocks and dark bottom. The speckled look breaks up a solid black profile, so the weight looks more natural. This rubberized lead coating creates a tough, wear-resistant surface layer that helps protect the weight from abrasion and holds up during frequent bottom contact.

In practice it’s most often used on heavy carp leads and casting weights (in-line leads, backleads, flat pear leads, swivels/attachments and other leads that take harder handling). Compared to classic powder paint, rubberized coating is thicker and heavier, which you’ll notice especially when using a fluid bed. For smooth and consistent airflow in the fluid bed, the Hailea ACO 208 compressor is a proven choice – it has the power and reserve needed for rubberized coating.

A big advantage is that you can mix shades together. Mottled Black works great as a base for a “stone” tone – either lightly dust a lighter shade while the base is still warm, or pre-mix the powder. Mix in small batches and always test on one piece first.

recommended coating process (field-proven):

  1. prep: clean and degrease the lead (any grease will ruin adhesion)

  2. heat: warm the lead to about 160–200 °C (typically 10–15 min in a hot-air oven; a torch only for a few seconds – the lead must not start melting)

  3. apply the coating:

fluid bed: best for batches; rubberized coating needs stable airflow (hence Hailea ACO 208)

quick dip in powder: dip the hot lead briefly and pull out immediately; shake the container first so the powder is “fluffed up”

  4. tap off: gently tap off excess for an even layer

  5. cure: for maximum durability, bake at about 180 °C for 10–20 min

  6. cool: let it cool freely in the air or hang it up

tip for a lime camo effect: while the base layer is still warm, lightly dust a darker green shade on top (or pre-mix shades) and then cure.
