VMC 7154 BN is a specialised Fireball jig hook with an Aberdeen 2X Strong Short Shank Jig 90° construction. It uses a short shank, reinforced 2X Strong wire, Needle Cone point, high-carbon steel, forged construction and a Flat Eye Jig. The BN designation refers to the Black Nickel finish.
The short shank is one of the most important differences compared with a standard jig hook. VMC 7154 is not designed to run deep through the body of a conventional soft plastic lure. It is intended primarily for compact Fireball jig heads and rigs where the hook itself remains close to the body of the head.
The 2X Strong construction uses heavier wire than standard light jig hooks. This provides a higher strength reserve under load, but it also means that the 7154 cannot automatically be replaced with another 90° hook of the same numerical size. A different wire diameter and much shorter shank can significantly affect how the hook fits inside the mold.
VMC 7154 #1/0 – more compact Fireball rigs and applications where a smaller hook and shorter overall rigging are preferred.
VMC 7154 #2/0 – a larger version with a wider bend and more clearance for a bulkier bait or stronger rig.
F152 – 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 / 26 g – a Fireball jig-head mold designed for VMC 7154 hooks in sizes 1/0 or 2/0.
Choose between 1/0 and 2/0 according to the actual rig and bait, not only according to the weight of the finished head. One hook size can work with several Fireball head weights if it fits the exact mold cavity correctly and matches the bait being used.
Fireball jig heads are used differently from standard jig heads with a long hook running through the body of a soft plastic lure. The short shank of the VMC 7154 leaves more of the bait free to move and allows a compact rig to be built around a lighter or heavier spherical head with a short, strong hook.
When choosing the hook, check the size of the bend and the actual position of the hook point relative to the bait. Enough free space must remain between the bait body and the point for a reliable hook-up. A larger numerical hook size is not automatically more suitable simply because you are using a heavier Fireball head.
VMC 7154 BN is suitable for anglers who cast their own Fireball jig heads. Before pouring lead, always place the exact hook size into the selected mold cavity and check the fit without lead. The short shank, eye and bend must sit correctly in the prepared grooves and both halves of the mold must close completely without placing pressure on the hook.
For this series, we have verified compatibility with mold F152, which produces Fireball heads of 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 g and uses VMC 7154 in sizes 1/0 or 2/0. Before casting a larger batch, we still recommend checking the exact hook-and-cavity combination dry.
A 90° specification does not mean that VMC 7154 can be replaced with any other 90° jig hook. VMC 7154 has a distinctly short Short Shank, reinforced 2X Strong wire and its own bend position. Another hook of the same size may be longer, thinner or use a different eye position and may therefore not fit the same mold correctly.
This is also important when comparing it with VMC 9147 BN. Both series use a 90° construction and are based on Aberdeen geometry, but the 9147 uses a Regular Shank for conventional jig heads, while the 7154 has a much shorter Short Shank and reinforced 2X Strong construction specifically suited to Fireball heads.
The Needle Cone point is designed for sharp penetration on the strike. Check its condition before every use, especially if the Fireball rig comes into contact with rocky or hard bottom. A blunt or mechanically damaged point should be replaced even if the rest of the hook remains in good condition.
The BN version uses a Black Nickel finish. The designation does not refer to standard bright nickel. For product parameters and category copy, it is better to keep the exact Black Nickel terminology so this version is not confused with other jig-hook finishes.
SAF offers VMC 7154 in sizes 1/0 and 2/0. Other standard, reinforced, 60° and 90° designs can be found in our main jig hooks category.
Frequently asked questions – VMC 7154 BN
What is VMC 7154 BN designed for?
It is a specialised short 90° jig hook designed primarily for casting Fireball jig heads. The construction combines a Short Shank with reinforced 2X Strong wire.
Which VMC 7154 sizes does SAF offer?
SAF offers sizes 1/0 and 2/0.
What does 2X Strong mean?
2X Strong refers to the reinforced hook construction. VMC 7154 uses heavier wire and provides a higher strength reserve than a standard light jig hook.
Why does VMC 7154 have a short shank?
The Short Shank matches the Fireball design, where the hook remains compact and close to the head instead of running deep through the bait like a standard jig hook.
What is the difference between sizes 1/0 and 2/0?
Size 2/0 is larger and provides a wider bend and more clearance around the bait. Choose according to the specific rig and always verify the actual fit inside the mold.
Is VMC 7154 compatible with mold F152?
Yes. Mold F152 produces Fireball jig heads in 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 g and is designed for VMC 7154 in sizes 1/0 or 2/0.
Does Fireball head weight determine the hook size?
Not automatically. The exact mold cavity, bait and intended rig are what matter. The same hook size can be suitable for several Fireball head weights.
Is VMC 7154 the same as VMC 9147?
No. VMC 7154 uses a Short Shank and reinforced 2X Strong construction for Fireball heads, while VMC 9147 uses a Regular Shank and is intended mainly for conventional jig heads.
Can VMC 7154 be replaced with another 90° hook of the same size?
Not automatically. Shank length, wire diameter, bend size and eye position may differ. Always test the replacement hook directly in the mold before casting.
What finish does VMC 7154 BN use?
The BN version uses a Black Nickel finish.
