VMC 9147 BN Aberdeen Jig 90° is a classic jig hook with an Aberdeen shape, Regular Shank and a 90° front bend. Its construction uses high-carbon steel, a Flat Eye Jig and the traditional VMC Cut Point. The BN designation refers to the Black Nickel finish. VMC recommends this series primarily for casting classic round jig heads.

Do not choose the hook size according to jig-head weight. The hook must primarily match the length and profile of the soft plastic lure, the required hook-point exit position and the amount of free space remaining inside the hook bend after rigging. Jig-head weight should be selected separately according to depth, current, rate of fall and the required presentation.

A characteristic feature of the 9147 is its traditional Aberdeen geometry. Compared with the pronounced Barbarian bend of VMC 5150, this is a more classic shape with a regular shank and smoother bend. This affects not only how the hook sits inside the soft plastic lure, but also how it fits into a specific jig mold.

#10–#6 – very small soft plastic lures, compact jig heads and lighter spinning setups where short and discreet hook placement is required.

#4–#1 – smaller to medium-sized minnows, shads and other soft plastic lures for perch and lighter zander fishing.

1/0–2/0 – versatile sizes for common soft plastic lures and standard zander jigging setups.

3/0–4/0 – larger shads and minnows, longer hook placement and setups for larger zander or pike.

When selecting the size, place the hook directly alongside the soft plastic lure and determine where the hook point should exit the body. The lure should remain straight after rigging. A hook that is too short positions the point unnecessarily far forward, while an excessively long shank can extend into the active rear section of the lure and restrict its movement.

With deeper-bodied shads, also check the amount of free space inside the hook bend. Enough clearance must remain between the lure body and the hook point for a reliable hook-up. With slimmer minnows, avoid using an unnecessarily long shank that could restrict their natural action. Two lures of the same overall length may therefore require different hook sizes.

The VMC 9147 BN range starts at size #10 and continues through #8, #6, #4, #2 and #1 to sizes 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 and 4/0. Pay particular attention to the transition between #1 and 1/0 – these are not two labels for the same size. The 1/0 hook is larger and may require a different lure and a different fit inside the mold.

VMC 9147 BN is suitable for anglers who cast their own jig heads. Before pouring lead, always place the exact hook size into the selected mold cavity and check the fit without lead. The shank and eye must sit correctly in the prepared grooves and both halves of the mold must close completely without placing pressure on the hook.

A 90° specification does not mean that all jig hooks with the same eye angle are interchangeable. VMC 9147 has its own Aberdeen geometry, Regular Shank and Flat Eye Jig. Another 90° hook series may have a different shank length, bend shape, wire diameter or different eye dimensions and positioning.

This is especially important when comparing it with VMC 5150 BN. Both models use a 90° front bend, but the 5150 has the characteristic Barbarian geometry and enlarged Large Eye, while the 9147 uses a classic Aberdeen shape and Flat Eye Jig. The same numerical hook size therefore does not automatically mean identical dimensions or compatibility with the same mold.

For VMC 9147, we have for example verified compatibility with mold F149 for jig heads of 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 g. With this mold, the listed VMC 9147 hook range is #1 to 4/0. Before serial casting, however, always test the actual fit of the exact hook size in the exact cavity. Browse the complete range in our jig head molds category.

Cut Point is the classic VMC point technology used on this series. Check its condition before rigging and after contact with rocks or other hard obstacles. The condition of the hook point has a greater effect on hook-up reliability than the colour or visual appearance of the hook itself.

Each VMC 9147 BN size is listed as a separate product, making it possible to match the hook precisely to the soft plastic lure and jig mold. Other hook geometries, sizes, eye angles and finishes can be found in our main jig hooks category.

Frequently asked questions – VMC 9147 BN

What does Aberdeen Jig 90° mean?

Aberdeen refers to the classic hook shape with a regular shank and characteristic bend. Jig 90° means that the front section with the eye is bent at 90° to the shank, which is a common construction for classic jig heads.

What does BN mean on VMC 9147?

BN refers to the Black Nickel finish. It does not describe the hook shape, size or strength class.

Which VMC 9147 BN sizes does SAF offer?

This category includes sizes #10, #8, #6, #4, #2, #1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 and 4/0. Each size is listed as a separate product.

Is size #1 the same as 1/0?

No. Size 1/0 is larger than #1. When moving between these sizes, check the soft-bait rigging and the hook fit inside the mold again.

How do I choose the correct VMC 9147 size for a soft plastic lure?

Place the hook alongside the lure and check the shank length, hook-point exit position, body profile and free space inside the hook bend. The active rear section of the lure must remain sufficiently free to move.

Does jig-head weight determine the hook size?

No. Hook size should primarily match the lure and the required rigging. Jig-head weight should be selected according to depth, current, rate of fall and presentation style.

Is VMC 9147 BN suitable for casting your own jig heads?

Yes. VMC recommends this series especially for classic round jig heads. Before casting, always test the exact hook size directly in the corresponding mold cavity and make sure the mold closes completely.

Is VMC 9147 BN compatible with mold F149?

Mold F149 is designed for jig heads from 3 to 12 g, and for VMC 9147 we list hook sizes #1 to 4/0. Before casting a full batch, always test the exact hook-and-cavity combination without lead.

Can VMC 9147 be replaced with VMC 5150 in the same numerical size?

Not automatically. Both models use a 90° front bend, but their bend geometry, shank and eye construction differ. Mold compatibility should therefore always be checked for the specific hook model.

What point does VMC 9147 BN use?

The series uses the VMC Cut Point. Check its condition regularly, especially after contact with hard or rocky bottom.
