Detailed information

Product detailed description

The RCBS Lead Thermometer 81175 is an analogue instrument for checking molten lead alloy temperature. The original instructions specify a 200–1000 °F range, approximately 93–538 °C. Its dial reads Fahrenheit; Celsius equivalents here are conversions for reference, rather than a switchable digital display.

Both the probe and adjustable safety handle are 6 inches, 152.4 mm, long. The glass-covered dial is 1½ inches, approximately 38.1 mm, in diameter. The handle supports positioning or attachment according to the vessel rim, allowing the probe to enter the bath safely.

The RCBS catalogue specifies Pro-Melt, Pro-Melt 2, Easy-Melt and the separate Lead Pot. The instructions describe attachment to iron pots and round vessels with suitable rims. Check actual probe reach, rim shape and stable positioning before use; other furnace models require their own clearance assessment.

The manufacturer states ±1% accuracy. This is a bath-checking instrument, without automatic control of furnace power. A suitable fishing casting temperature depends on alloy, mould, charge and casting pace, so assess the reading in relation to the actual process.

Practical procedure

  1. Check that the probe and handle are clean, undamaged and completely dry.
  2. Adjust the handle for stable support or attachment on the actual vessel rim.
  3. Introduce the probe into the melt, keeping the dial above the bath, and read the settled indication.
  4. Once the required temperature is reached, carefully remove the instrument as instructed and rest it safely.

The thermometer is a useful checking accessory for the RCBS Easy-Melt 240 V furnace and RCBS Pro-Melt 2 240 V. On a digitally controlled furnace, it helps compare the setting with the bath temperature, allowing for measuring position and timing.

Supplied as a thermometer with safety handle. A furnace or melting vessel is not included. Let the probe cool after use and keep lead-handling tools separate from food equipment.

Use only dry moulds, metal and tools. Moisture contacting molten lead can cause violent spattering. Wear eye protection, heat-resistant gloves, protective clothing and closed footwear. Provide effective extraction or ventilation. Lead and contaminated dust are toxic; keep food, drinks, children and pregnant people away from the work area. Wash your hands after work and safely remove residues and dust.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Does the dial read Celsius?

The illustrated version has a Fahrenheit dial. Its 200–1000 °F range converts to approximately 93–538 °C.

How long is the probe?

It is 6 inches, 152.4 mm. The manufacturer specifies the same length for the adjustable safety handle.

Does it control the furnace heater?

No. It measures and checks temperature without controlling furnace power.

Can it remain in the bath permanently?

RCBS describes checking the temperature and carefully removing the instrument when the desired temperature is reached. Follow this procedure and the furnace instructions.
