Detailed information

Product detailed description

The RCBS Lead Pot 80010 is a separate cast-iron melting vessel for approximately 10 lb, or 4.5 kg, of lead or a suitable casting alloy. It features a flat bottom, metal bail handle, pouring lip and an opposing lifting tab for suitable tongs or pliers. It has no built-in heater or controller.

Use a suitable external heat source intended for melting lead. Check load capacity, support dimensions and stability before assembling the workstation, including clearance for handling tools. The 4.5 kg capacity refers to the charge mass rather than litres or the empty pot weight.

For fishing sinkers, molten alloy can be taken with an appropriate ladle. The pouring lip helps direct the stream when transferring metal, but handling a filled vessel requires a secure grip and a prepared work area. The handle and tab should not be assumed to remain cool.

The Lead Pot is independent workshop equipment, without declared fit as a replacement internal vessel for RCBS electric furnaces. Select it by the required charge, heat source and method of filling the casting mould.

Practical procedure

  1. Place the vessel on a stable, suitable heat source and check safe access.
  2. Add clean, completely dry metal of known composition suitable for the vessel.
  3. Once molten, check bath temperature and cleanliness; dispense with suitable dry tools.
  4. Switch off the heat source after work and allow the vessel to cool safely before moving or maintaining it.

A Lyman Casting Therm digital thermometer can check temperature when its probe is correctly positioned in the bath. For smaller charges, compare the RCBS Lead Dipper casting ladle and its dimensions with the vessel opening.

Supplied as one RCBS Lead Pot cast-iron vessel. External heating, lead, a ladle and a casting mould are sold separately. Keep the pot and all lead-contaminated tools for dedicated workshop use.

Use only dry moulds, metal and tools. Moisture contacting molten lead can cause violent spattering. Wear eye protection, heat-resistant gloves, protective clothing and closed footwear. Provide effective extraction or ventilation. Lead and contaminated dust are toxic; keep food, drinks, children and pregnant people away from the work area. Wash your hands after work and safely remove residues and dust.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is this an electric pot?

It has no built-in electric heater or thermostat. It requires a suitable external heat source.

What is its capacity?

RCBS specifies approximately 10 lb of metal, about 4.5 kg of lead. This is a mass rather than a litre capacity.

What is the tab opposite the pouring lip for?

RCBS specifies gripping it with suitable tongs or pliers during handling and pouring; account for the high temperature of the whole vessel.

Can it replace the internal pot in an electric furnace?

Such compatibility is not specified. Lead Pot 80010 is a separate vessel for external heating.
