Method Feeder Molds | SAF Method Series

SAF Method Series is a modular system for making your own method feeders. It starts with an aluminium mold used to cast a lead weight designed specifically for the matching plastic feeder frame. Once the casting has cooled, the metal insert is fitted into the frame and mechanically secured. The result is a complete feeder body that can be equipped with the remaining components of the chosen fishing rig.

A mold for casting method feeder weights is not the same as a bait-loading method feeder mold. The casting mold works with molten metal to produce the weight itself. A conventional bait-loading mold, by contrast, is used to shape groundbait or pellets around an already assembled feeder. These products perform different functions and are not interchangeable.

The advantage of SAF's own system is the ability to assemble a complete feeder from compatible individual components. The lead casting determines its base weight, the plastic frame provides the space for groundbait, and the tail rubber forms part of the appropriate rig connection. All components must therefore be considered together.

SAF offers individual aluminium molds for casting lead inserts weighing 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 g. Each mold produces a specific weight, so there is no complicated combination of several cavities to consider. Choose the required casting weight and the corresponding accessories for final assembly.

Choose feeder weight according to casting distance, water depth, current and the equipment being used. A lighter feeder may suit shorter distances and a more delicate presentation, while a heavier setup can help with longer casts or more demanding conditions. The total weight of the feeder after adding groundbait is also important, not just the lead insert.

The shape of the SAF Method Series lead insert has been developed with stable flight in mind. However, casting distance and accuracy also depend on how the feeder is loaded, rod selection, line, weather conditions and angler technique. A heavier weight therefore does not automatically mean a longer or more accurate cast.

After casting, allow the lead insert to cool sufficiently and inspect its surface and mechanical attachment points. Remove any excess lead or sharp edges so the casting fits correctly into the plastic frame without damaging it during assembly.

SAF Method Series assembly involves fitting the casting into the plastic frame and securing it at four points. Suitable pliers are used for this mechanical connection. Apply pressure evenly so the metal component seats correctly without damaging the plastic frame. Once secured, check that the two parts cannot move undesirably relative to each other.

SAF plastic feeder frames are available in Brown and Green. Colour can help match the feeder's appearance to the fishing environment, but it does not determine its weight, bait capacity or rig safety. These properties depend mainly on the design and correct assembly.

Tail Rubber is another component of the system. Its purpose is to complete the appropriate rig connection, not to replace the plastic feeder frame or the lead insert. Before assembly, always check compatibility between the sleeve, leader material and the other rig components.

How the finished method feeder is loaded is also important. Fine groundbait and moistened pellets may require different preparation and compression. The bait needs to remain attached during casting but release appropriately after the feeder reaches the water, depending on the mix and conditions.

When comparing different method feeder systems, do not automatically assume that plastic frames, bait-loading molds or rubber sleeves are interchangeable across manufacturers. SAF Method Series has its own lead insert design and attachment method. Use components intended for this system.

The lead insert can be finished with a suitable rubberised coating before assembly. A coating may reduce direct exposure of the lead surface and allows the weight to be matched visually to the plastic frame. It must be applied and cured according to the manufacturer's instructions and must not interfere with the precise fit of the two components.

Before producing a larger batch, we recommend casting and assembling one test feeder. Check its actual weight, fit inside the plastic frame, mechanical connection and the function of the complete rig. Only then proceed with repeated casting.

The safety of the complete method feeder rig is also important if the main line breaks. Use an appropriate running or release system according to the rig design, and avoid combinations that could leave a fish permanently attached to a heavy feeder. Check the release behaviour of the assembled system.

When working with molten lead, wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, long clothing and closed footwear. Work on a stable, heat-resistant surface with effective ventilation. The mold and all tools that may contact molten metal must be clean and completely dry.

Keep water and damp objects away from the casting area. Do not eat, drink or smoke while casting, keep lead-working equipment separate from kitchen utensils and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Always follow the instructions supplied with the mold, metal and melting equipment.
