The SAF Method Series 40 g aluminum mold produces a lead insert for a plastic method feeder basket. It has 1 cavity for nominal weights of 40 g. The single cavity produces one lead part at the listed nominal weight.
This version produces a 40 g lead insert. The range contains separate 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 g molds; it is not one mold offering six weights. Select the load by rig control and your rod's casting range.
The lead weight is not the weight of a filled feeder. Include the basket, groundbait and other parts when assessing the casting load. Current, bottom slope, basket resistance and line tension affect how it holds; weight alone does not guarantee a fixed position or a particular casting distance.
The mold casts only the lead insert. Fit it into a SAF Method Series plastic basket only after the lead has fully cooled and been deburred. Secure it at the system’s four fixing points by pressing with pliers. Check full seating and joint strength; the plastic segment must not be cracked or distorted. Finish the cleaned casting with a rubber lead coating according to the coating manufacturer’s instructions.

From the mold to a finished feeder
- Prepare a clean, completely dry mold and tools. Keep plastic baskets away from the pouring area.
- Check correct assembly, full closure and secure the mold.
- Cast according to the instructions for the mold, metal and melting equipment. Never place plastic parts in molten metal.
- Once solidified and safe to handle, remove the casting. Let it cool fully, then trim the sprue and deburr the edges.
- Apply any coating before assembly. Fit the cooled, finished lead insert into a SAF Method Series basket.
- Secure the four fixing points with pliers. Check joint strength, passages and total weight including groundbait.
Nominal weights refer to one casting, not the total output of the mold. The metal used and finishing affect actual weight, so weigh the first casting from each cavity you use. Check the function of all rig components and keep within the capacity of your rod and complete tackle.
Casting safety
- Never pour molten metal into a damp mold. Inserts and tools must also be completely dry.
- Wear safety glasses and suitable protective gloves. Use a stable, heat-resistant work area with effective ventilation.
- Follow the instructions for the mold, metal and melting equipment. The mold temperature limit is not a recommended pouring temperature.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke when working with lead. Keep casting equipment separate from kitchen utensils and wash your hands afterwards.
