Feeder molds are used to make weighted bait cages and other constructions for bottom fishing. The basic purpose of a feeder is to carry groundbait to the fishing area and allow it to disperse around the hook bait. Its behaviour depends on body shape, casting weight, cage design and the characteristics of the bait mixture.

A conventional feeder cage is not the same as a method feeder. Conventional designs may use perforated sheet metal, a mesh cage or another structure for holding groundbait. Method feeders have a different body design and a particular way of compressing bait around the feeder. Their molds and components are therefore not automatically interchangeable.

This category includes molds for various feeder and carp feeder weights, together with separate metal components required for production. Before choosing, establish whether you need to cast a lead weight, produce a specific metal section or assemble a feeder from several compatible parts.

Lighter feeders – for delicate feeder fishing and shorter casts; include the weight of the loaded bait cage when selecting your setup.

Heavier feeders – for stronger current and longer casts; consider cage drag, water pressure on the line and rod casting weight.

Multi-cavity molds – several casting weights in one mold; check cavity count, individual weights and compatible metal components.

Sheet metal parts – feeder cage components attached to the lead casting; dimensions and fastening must match the selected mold.

Choose feeder weight according to current, casting distance, depth and the total weight of the complete setup. The casting weight of the lead section alone is not enough. Once filled with groundbait, the feeder may be significantly heavier and must still remain within the capacity of the rod and rig.

In still water, a lighter feeder may allow a more sensitive presentation. In flowing water, the ability to maintain the desired position is particularly important. However, weight alone does not determine stability. Body shape, cage resistance and pressure on the line also matter.

Different feeder designs vary in opening size, bait capacity and the way groundbait is released. Fine groundbait may disperse differently from coarse particles or pellets. When making your own feeders, consider the type of mixture you intend to use rather than casting weight alone.

The aluminium mold produces a precisely shaped lead component, while the perforated sheet metal or other accessory may form a separate part of the finished feeder. During assembly, the components must fit correctly and the connection must withstand casting, impact with the water and repeated use.

Select perforated sheet metal components according to the exact feeder mold. Similar casting weights do not guarantee identical cage dimensions. Length, width, bending profile and attachment method may all differ.

SAF offers, for example, F143 for 20 g, F142 for 45 g, F111 for 60 g and F140 for 90 g. Multi-weight molds such as F132 and F88 are also available. Check the cavity count and feeder construction rather than focusing only on the highest casting weight.

If the cavities can be filled independently, you can produce only the weight required. This is useful when preparing feeders for different venues where the casting weight changes but the general feeding method remains similar.

Metal inserts, guide pieces and connecting components must be prepared correctly before casting. All components must be intended for the exact mold, seated properly and positioned so that both halves close completely. Follow the dimensions specified for the individual product.

After cooling, trim any excess lead and check the attachment to the cage. Sharp edges may damage the leader or the metal feeder body. With running designs, a clean and smooth line passage is especially important.

Complete feeder construction also influences casting behaviour. A compact, evenly loaded feeder may fly differently from a bulky metal cage. A particular casting distance cannot be predicted from the mold name or weight alone. The groundbait and complete setup affect the result.

When using feeders in carp rigs, check how the weight can be released if the main line breaks. The running system or other attachment must be appropriate for the intended application. Never modify components in a way that could leave a fish dangerously trapped with a heavy feeder.

Lead components can be finished with a suitable coating for the specific product. However, paint must not interfere with cage attachment, block an internal passage or cover functional connection points. Allow the coating to cure properly before assembly.

Before producing a larger batch, assemble one test feeder. Check the total weight, strength of the mechanical connection, available bait space and attachment method. Proceed with repeated casting only after the complete feeder has been checked.

When working with molten lead, wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, long clothing and closed footwear. Use effective ventilation and a stable, heat-resistant surface. The mold and all inserted components must be clean and completely dry. Moisture in contact with molten metal is dangerous.

Do not eat, drink or smoke during casting, and keep water away from the working area. Separate lead-working equipment from kitchen utensils and wash your hands thoroughly after finishing. Follow the instructions for the mold and melting equipment.

For conventional feeder cages and carp feeders, select the mold according to cage construction, weight range and required components. If you want to make modular plastic method feeders with a separate lead insert, use the dedicated SAF Method Series.

Frequently asked questions – feeder fishing molds

What is the difference between a conventional feeder and a method feeder?

A conventional feeder may use a metal or mesh cage. A method feeder has a different body design and method of holding compressed bait. Their molds and components are not automatically interchangeable.

Which feeder weight should I choose?

Consider current, depth, casting distance and rod casting-weight rating. Include the weight of groundbait carried by the finished feeder.

Which feeder mold weights does SAF offer?

The range includes individual molds for weights such as 20, 45, 60 and 90 g, together with multi-cavity models. Check each product for exact specifications.

Are metal feeder cages included with every mold?

Not automatically. Check the package contents and required accessories of the individual product.

Can I use the same sheet metal cage with different molds?

Only if compatibility is confirmed. Dimensions and attachment methods can differ even between similar designs.

Can I cast several feeder weights from one mold?

Yes, if the mold has several cavities. The available weights and number of castings are listed in its parameters.

How can I tell whether a finished feeder is assembled correctly?

The lead weight must be securely attached to the matching cage, there must be no harmful sharp edges, and all passages or attachments must function correctly.

Can the finished feeder be coated?

Yes, using a suitable coating for the material. Functional connections and passages must remain clear.

How can I cast feeder weights safely?

Use protective equipment and effective ventilation. The mold and metal components must be completely dry. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
