SaBoFlex Fluo Japanese Red is a concentrated fluorescent pigment paste for colouring plastisol when making soft-plastic fishing lures. It is designed to produce a vivid warm red to red-orange fluorescent shade. This is a colour concentrate intended to be mixed into base plastisol – not ready-to-use plastisol, an airbrush paint or a surface coating.

Japanese Red is a distinct commercial shade name, not another name for ordinary red. Depending on the dose, the plastisol used, the thickness of the casting and the lighting, the finished colour may range from a lively warm red to a richer high-visibility red with a scarlet or red-orange cast. The concentrate in the bottle and the colour shown on a screen are therefore not exact samples of the finished lure; a cooled test casting is the decisive reference.

The word Fluo appears directly on the product label and distinguishes this colour from SaBoFlex Standard Red, Transparent Blood Red and the existing Fluo Red. It does not, however, mean that the lure will glow after the light source has been removed. The label also provides no separate guarantee of UV activity, a metallic or pearlescent effect, nano-glitter content, or a specific degree of opacity or transparency. We therefore do not assign these properties without a product-specific technical data sheet.

The label instructs the user to shake or stir the colour thoroughly before use. For workshop use with this paste, SAF recommends adding it in small amounts to plastisol that is already hot and clear. It is difficult to judge the finished intensity in a cold, milky-looking base; once the colour is mixed into clear working plastisol, you can monitor the change in shade as you work. Always prepare the plastisol according to its manufacturer's temperature and safety instructions and do not overheat it.

We do not specify a fixed number of drops per 100 g. Drop size varies with the dispensing nozzle, and the same dose may look different in different plastisols or lure thicknesses. Start with a small amount: a pale mixture can be intensified, but colour concentrate that has already been added cannot be removed. For repeatable production, record the weight of the plastisol, the colour dose and every other additive used.

Fluo Japanese Red can be used for the complete lure body, a vivid belly, tail, head or smaller contrasting accent. In a laminate, it creates a strong colour division against a black, dark brown, olive or smoke-coloured back. It can also be blended into a high-visibility transition with fluorescent yellow or orange. Suitable heat-resistant black, red, gold, copper or silver glitter can further change the character of the lure. Test every new combination in a small trial batch first.

The 50 g option is practical for trying the shade for the first time, making smaller batches or equipping a workshop that uses several colours. The 250 g bottle makes more sense for regular production or repeated use of the same recipe, offers better value per gram and is easier to homogenise by shaking because of the greater mass of its contents. The concentration and the plastisol-colouring method remain the same for both pack sizes.

Storage and packaging appearance

The pigment paste and base plastisol are not the same material and should not be treated identically in storage. In SAF workshop experience, Fluo Japanese Red remains easier to work with in cooler conditions than plastisol itself, but the manufacturer does not publish an exact minimum storage temperature. The colour should therefore not be regarded as frost-resistant. Store it upright, tightly closed and dry at a stable room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat sources and frost. If the sealed bottle has become cold, allow it to return naturally to room temperature before opening, then shake it thoroughly. Do not warm it on a radiator, hot plate or in a microwave oven.

Packaging notice: Especially after transport, a light oily film may appear around the thread or leave a mark on the label, even when the bottle is closed. If there is no visible loss of contents, this surface trace does not affect the use of the colour; we apologise for any marking of the label. After dosing, wipe the bottle neck and thread, retighten the cap firmly and store the bottle upright, ideally in a washable tray or sealed bag.

The exact difference is affected by the dose, base plastisol and lure thickness, so compare cooled test castings whenever a particular shade is required.

Should Fluo Japanese Red be added to cold or hot plastisol?

For this pigment paste, SAF recommends adding small amounts to hot plastisol that has reached its clear working state. Stir slowly after each addition; this allows you to see the change in intensity without the distortion caused by a cold, milky-looking base. Always determine the correct temperature and safe process from the instructions supplied with the plastisol being used.

How much colour should I use per 100 g of plastisol?

No single universal ratio has been published for Fluo Japanese Red. Start with a small amount, stir the mixture thoroughly after every addition and assess the shade on a cooled sample. Once you achieve the desired result, record the exact weight of the plastisol and the colour dose for the next batch.

Does Fluo mean that it is also UV-active or glows in the dark?

The label confirms the fluorescent Fluo version, not a phosphorescent glow after the light source has been removed. The manufacturer does not provide a separate UV-activity guarantee on the label, so we do not assign one without a technical data sheet. If you need a specific UV effect, use a product that expressly declares this property and test the new mixture first.

What can I combine Japanese Red with?

It is suitable for single-colour lures as well as contrasting sections such as a belly, tail, head or high-visibility accent. In a laminate, it can be paired with a dark back, blended into a transition with other fluorescent colours or complemented with suitable heat-resistant glitter. Test every new combination in a small trial batch.
