Product detailed description

VMC 5150 RD 5/0 Jig Hook is a red jig hook for larger soft plastics without an unnecessarily heavy head. Size 5/0 suits soft plastics with a longer solid body section and homemade jig heads in various weights. For zander and pike fishing, it lets you combine a larger hook with a lighter head when you need a slower fall. Suitable moulds also let you add weight for presentations that demand more control.

At approximately 60 mm overall, this is one dimensional step above 4/0. Before moving to the longer 6/0, check the rigged lure and the clearance in the gape. The length of body occupied by the shank affects flexibility. A long lure may work better on a shorter hook, provided the point emerges in the right place.

The 5150 Barbarian Large Eye Jig 90° uses high-carbon steel and a Needle Cone point. Its construction differs from the 7161 and 6198 ranges, so their point designations and recommended mould combinations do not automatically apply to the 5150. VMC is a French fishing-hook manufacturer with a history dating back to 1910 and manufacturing facilities in Morvillars.

The angular Barbarian bend forms the distinctive lower part of the hook, which the manufacturer calls the Technical Locking Curve. Once the lure is rigged, the point must be able to reach the fish's mouth. The soft plastic must therefore leave room between the shank and point. With a deep-bodied paddle tail, check body depth as well as length. With a slim soft jerkbait, pay particular attention to the point exit position and keeping the rear section free to move.

The 90° front bend determines how the hook seats and where the eye sits in the head. The line pulls at this point; its position relative to the head's centre of gravity affects how the lure tilts during the retrieve. The hook angle does not prescribe a fixed swimming angle. Head shape, lure drag, current and the direction of pull all influence the result. The larger eye makes threading the leader and tying knots easier. After finishing the head, check that the eye is clear of metal and paint.

This size clearly shows why hook size and head weight are separate choices: F11 offers light heads, F207 and F210 medium weights, and other moulds provide heavier options. F133 has a specific restriction: 5/0 fits the 16, 20, 30 and 42 g cavities, but not the 9 g cavity.

Compatible moulds for VMC 5150 RD 5/0

  • F11 – jig heads, 6–19 g.
  • F133 – 16, 20, 30 and 42 g cavities only; 5/0 does not fit the 9 g cavity.
  • F207 – jig heads, 20–40 g.
  • F210 – jig heads with a cast-in bait keeper, 20–40 g.
  • F41 – fish-shaped jig heads, 30 and 40 g.
  • F66 – fish-shaped jig heads.
  • F126 – jig heads.
  • F153 – jig heads, 50–90 g.

The stated weights apply to lead castings. Unless expressly stated otherwise, the recommendation covers the mould as a whole; it does not mean that this hook fits every cavity. Before casting, check that the specific hook seats correctly and the mould closes fully.

By casting your own heads, you can prepare several weights for the same lure. The hook determines lure fit; head weight helps control the presentation. As the current strengthens, add only enough weight to maintain the intended path and contact. When fishing in midwater, a slower fall may keep the soft plastic at the fish's level for longer. Depth alone is therefore not a reliable guide to head weight.

RD denotes the red finish

The VMC 5150 BN range provides the dark-finish alternative to this construction. If your required size is available in both finishes, compare like-for-like sizes. Colour lets you adjust the appearance of the rig; it does not guarantee more bites or compatibility with every mould. The 7161 BN and 6198 TI ranges use a different 60° front bend. Check their suitability against the mould specification.

Before casting a larger batch, seat the hook in the dry mould and check that it closes fully. After making the first head, check that the hook is firmly anchored, the eye is clear and the lure can be rigged straight. Do not reshape the hook to force it into an unsuitable recess. Follow the instructions for the mould, casting metal and melting equipment.

After contact with rocks, inspect the point and check whether the bend has opened. After saltwater use, rinse the rig with fresh water and let it dry. During a fight, the hook works together with the rod, drag and leader; the numerical hook size is not a guaranteed load rating.

VMC 5150 RD 5/0: frequently asked questions

Does 5/0 fit every F133 cavity?

No. The manufacturer specifies this size for 16, 20, 30 and 42 g. Do not use 5/0 in the 9 g cavity; choose another documented hook option for that cavity.

What does the larger eye offer?

It makes threading the leader and tying knots easier. The eye must remain clean and open after casting and painting. Eye size alone does not indicate hook strength.

Does the 90° bend guarantee a horizontal lure position?

The angle describes the front bend of the hook. The actual position in the water also depends on the head shape and centre of gravity, lure rigging, direction of pull and current.

Is the same design available in black?

Compare the sizes available in the VMC 5150 BN range. Where the same size is offered in both finishes, you can choose according to finish. Check the fit again when switching to a different model range.

How do I recognise a correctly rigged lure?

The soft plastic sits straight behind the head, the point emerges through the solid part of the body and the gape remains clear. The tail and other active parts of the lure should be free to move.
