Gamakatsu Jig 90 5/0 suits larger paddle tails and more demanding lure fishing for zander and pike. The extra-strong construction of the Jig 90 range also makes it useful for lighter saltwater lure fishing. Still, choose hook size primarily according to the lure and compatibility with the mould, rather than only the target species or head weight.

The soft lure should sit straight behind the jig head. The point should exit through a solid section of the body, leaving enough space between the lure and the hook bend for a secure hookset. With a slim soft jerkbait, focus on where the point exits. With a deeper-bodied paddle tail, also check that the lure body does not fill too much of the hook bend.

Before casting a batch, always test the particular hook size in a dry mould. The hook must sit correctly in its groove, and the mould must close freely and fully. If the hook does not fit, do not bend it to suit the mould. Use the correct hook instead.

The same 90° front bend does not make this hook automatically interchangeable with the VMC 5150 RD or VMC 5150 BN. These are different model ranges, and compatibility must be checked for the particular mould.

Frequently asked questions

When does it make sense to move from 4/0 to 5/0?
With a larger or bulkier soft lure when a 4/0 exits too close to the front. The 5/0 point should still exit through a solid section of the body, leaving the tail free.

Is the Gamakatsu Jig 90 suitable for salt water?
Yes. The manufacturer explicitly recommends the Jig 90 range for fresh and salt water. After use at sea, rinse the rig with fresh water and let it dry.

What does NS Black mean?
NS Black is the name Gamakatsu uses for the dark finish on this European product range. At SAF, we retain the manufacturer's original designation.

Is the Gamakatsu Jig 90 the same as the VMC 5150?
No. Both ranges have a 90° front bend, but they are different models. The same hook size does not automatically guarantee compatibility with the same mould.

How do I choose the right hook size?
Choose the hook according to the length and depth of the soft lure and where the point should exit. Jig head weight alone does not determine hook size.
