Two cavities give you a pair of weights for the same hook size, allowing a lighter and heavier rig with the chosen soft bait. It is a practical choice when you want two distinct options rather than a long series of weights. For saltwater lure fishing in Norway, use it with a paddle-tail shad for cod and other predators where conditions allow the lure to be worked properly with this amount of weight.

The rounded fish-shaped front with eye recesses gives the lure a more pronounced head ahead of the soft-bait body. Aim to build one continuous fish-shaped lure: the front of the soft bait should meet the back of the lead head straight, without a kink or bulge. On a paddle-tail shad, the tail creates much of the action during retrieval; a curly-tail body gives a different response. A passive soft jerkbait needs more rod-tip work and changes of pace. Look beyond the head’s colour when choosing components. Body cross-section and tail design determine whether the finished rig suits the intended retrieve.

The 30 g difference between the cavities lets you compare noticeably different falls. Use the 90 g head when you want a slower presentation while retaining a clear sense of lure movement and contact. The 120 g option adds weight for drift, current or a soft bait with greater drag. When fishing in midwater, watch the time the lure spends at the fish’s level; the heavier option can pass through that layer more quickly. Near the bottom, you need contact you can recognise. Neither weight can be converted into one recommended depth without knowing the line, lure and current.

The specified rigging is VMC 5150 10/0. The hook must support the particular body correctly and give the point room to work during a hookset. A heavier head does not create that clearance. Before casting, hold the hook against the soft bait and check that it does not extend into the moving tail section. Once rigged, the body must not be stretched, twisted or filling the entire gape. If you need a different hook size, compare molds such as F193, which offers 8/0, 10/0 and 12/0. Changing the mold also changes the head shape and available weights.

Finish the surface with a suitable powder paint or rubber coating for lead and add 8 mm stick-on eyes. Avoid a thick coating in the eye recesses, keep the hook eye open and leave the point clear. Choose bait retention according to the actual casting and lure material. Do not automatically assign a separate wire keeper because it fits another mold. Among related soft baits, select bodies that suit a 10/0 hook and the fish-profile head. Test the first complete rig in water before casting a batch for the same body and intended presentation.

Casting weights and hook options

F53 has two cavities: one for 90 g and one for 120 g. This mold does not include an intermediate weight. The rigging follows SAF’s specifications. Dry-fit the actual hook before casting, check full closure and weigh the first finished head. The alloy and finishing can affect the resulting weight.

Filling both cavities requires a nominal 210 g of lead plus pouring sprues, so allow a margin when selecting ladle capacity. Hooks, eyes, soft baits and coatings are not automatically included with the mold. Any adhesive must suit the lure material. After saltwater use, rinse the finished heads with fresh water, let them dry and check the point and any damage to the surface finish.

Frequently asked questions about F53

What is the practical difference between 90 and 120 g?

An extra 30 g changes the load and usually the fall speed of the same soft bait. Use the lightest option that lets you control the lure reliably for your chosen method. Current, drift and drag from the complete rig all matter.

Can I also cast 100 g with F53?

The mold has 90 and 120 g cavities. For 100 g, compare F16, which offers 80, 100 and 120 g with a shad-head profile. Check body dimensions and the transition into the chosen head shape.

Can I replace VMC 5150 with another 10/0 hook?

The same size number does not establish the same eye and shank geometry. The specified hook for F53 is VMC 5150 10/0. Another series must not be assumed to fit automatically.

Which eyes should I choose?

SAF specifies 8 mm stick-on eyes for F53. Attach them to a clean, dry, cooled surface after finishing the coating. Avoid filling the recesses with a thick layer of paint.

Does the mold suit every large lure for Norway?

Suitability depends on body cross-section, shank length and gape clearance. A 10/0 hook may not suit some bodies. Check the complete lure weight against the rod’s rating as well.
