The Your Mold F214 lead casting mold lets you make large round jig heads in 400 and 500 g. Two separate cavities are designed for VMC 6169 hooks in size 16/0. This is a heavy setup for boat fishing with large soft bait bodies. Choose it in Norway when targeting large cod and halibut where current, drift and lure resistance call for this amount of weight.

Start with 400 g where you can still keep the lure at the intended depth and recognise contact with the bottom. Move up to 500 g when current or drift increases, or when a bulky soft bait and line create more resistance. Head weight is not tied to one fixed fishing depth: the same head can behave very differently as drift changes. If even 400 g hits the bottom too hard and snags too often, choose a lighter mold. Match the rod and the rest of the setup to the total weight of the head and lure, and to the intended fishing method.

The round head concentrates weight ahead of the soft bait body, while the tail and your retrieve create the lure action. Lift a large paddle-tail shad off the bottom and let it fall under control; a curly-tail lure uses its own tail movement, while a soft jerkbait responds more to changes of speed. Lift the heavy head as needed over uneven ground to keep it clear of rocks. When fishing through the water column, keep the lure at the depth of the fish. Straight rigging matters here too: a crooked body can make the setup spin during the retrieve.

Choose VMC 6169 in 16/0 for F214, available as the VMC 6169 jig hook. The version offered has robust round wire and a Black Nickel finish. Before rigging, lay the hook against the chosen soft bait and check shank reach, where the point will emerge and the clearance above the body for a hookset. Size 16/0 alone does not confirm lure fit; an excessively long shank can restrict the tail. Head weight does not indicate the strength of the complete rig, which also depends on the hook, leader and drag setting.

Choose large bodies such as SPRO IRIS Shocktail in 30 or 40 cm only after checking the actual fit on the hook. Length in centimetres does not replace an assessment of body thickness and free movement of the rear section. Depending on the lure material, a suitable adhesive can help secure the front joint; check that the adhesive is compatible with the material. Finish the head with powder paint or a suitable flexible coating for lead, keeping the hook eye clear. For lower weights, compare F148 in 300 and 350 g or F192 in 200 and 250 g among the jig head molds. When changing molds, also check the specified hook: a lower weight does not automatically mean the same hook compatibility.

Casting weights and hook compatibility

Both weights refer to lead castings fitted with VMC 6169 16/0 hooks. Do not treat another hook series or size as interchangeable based on appearance alone. Seat the actual hook in the dry mold before casting and check that the mold closes fully.

Choose hooks, coatings and other accessories separately; they are not automatically included with the mold. A first test casting helps you check cavity fill, hook anchoring and actual weight. Using another metal changes the casting weight. Compatibility with a preformed 19 mm keeper or a specific stick-on eye diameter has not been confirmed here; choose accessories according to the actual groove and the dimensions of the finished head.

Does a 16/0 hook fit every large soft bait?

Not automatically. Check where the point emerges, clearance above the body and free tail movement. Lures of the same length can still differ in thickness and shape.

Do I have to cast both cavities at once?

No. Prepare only the cavity for the weight you need. Weigh the first head and check its rigging before making a larger batch.
