Platil Marine 1.00 mm / 70 kg, 100 m is designed for the heaviest natural-bait traces and large halibut jigs. Choose this stiff, almost wire-like monofilament with eye size and the required bait movement in mind. It targets large ling and halibut on natural baits and short leaders of around one metre ahead of large halibut jigs. For this heavy-duty class we recommend crimped end connections with a suitable sleeve and tool.

Detailed information

Product detailed description

For SAF applications, Platil Marine 1.00 mm belongs to the heaviest leader-monofilament class. It is intended for large ling and halibut on natural baits and for short terminal sections ahead of large halibut jigs. Its stiff, almost wire-like handling is why it should not be treated as an ordinary soft 1.00 mm version from another range.

Firmer, stiffer rig monofilament needs to be chosen around the way the trace is built. In SAF practice, Platil handles differently from soft Regenerator, becoming almost wire-like in the heavier versions. Stiffness can help a body retain its shape while increasing the demands on eye size and connections. The 100 m pack supplies spare rigs and replacement sections for later trips.

SAF recommendation: The heaviest natural-bait traces and large halibut jigs. When building a heavy rig, start with the bait and hook arrangement, then plan the body and sinker. Ahead of a large jig, a leader of around one metre can be adapted to handling beside the boat. For this stiff class, we recommend crimped ends rather than bulky conventional knots. Do not turn it into a general tube-eel system simply because the label reads 1.00 mm.

Neighbouring diameters and rig choice. Compared with 0.90 mm, this version adds cross-section and stiffness. In practical application it belongs to the same heaviest-use group as some 1.20 mm leader materials; that does not claim equal measured breaking strain, abrasion performance or interchangeable fittings.

Ahead of a large jig, separate the leader’s role from the stinger. The leader connects the main line to the lure; the stinger carries hooks along the soft body and needs its own suitable fittings. On a natural-bait system, check that bait, hook and sinker do not readily tangle while lowering or retrieving. A heavy setup must remain manageable beside the boat, so choose length and hardware for a clear purpose.

For this heavy-duty class we recommend crimped end connections. The sleeve bore must suit the actual diameter and material path through the loop; use the appropriate tool and procedure for that sleeve. An excessive crimp may damage the line, while an insufficient one may fail to hold it. Follow the component manufacturer’s guidance and test each new connection before fishing. A bulky conventional knot forced into a small eye is not the recommended solution here.

Do not convert the 70 kg label figure into a fish weight you can lift by the trace. Connections, hardware and wear affect the completed rig. Inspect the terminal section and areas beside eyes after bottom or fish contact. Cut away damaged line, rinse used sea rigs in fresh water and let them dry. Keep spare material away from heat and direct sunlight. Abrasion resistance is not guaranteed bite protection; choose an appropriate terminal material when sharp teeth require it.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

When should I choose Platil Marine 1.00 mm?

The heaviest natural-bait traces and large halibut jigs.

Can it be the body of a cod tube-eel rig?

This is not recommended for an ordinary tube-eel system. Choose it for the heaviest natural-bait traces and short leaders ahead of large halibut jigs.

Should I tie or crimp this diameter?

For the heavy-duty use described here, we recommend crimped end connections with a suitable sleeve and tool. Bulky conventional knots forced into small eyes are not recommended.

Why not choose Platil solely by another brand’s diameter?

In SAF practice Platil has a firmer construction and its heavier diameters serve distinctly heavy-duty roles. Equal diameter does not mean equal suppleness, eye size or end connection.

Does 70 kg describe the strength of the complete rig?

No. It is a declared material figure; connections, components and wear affect the finished rig. It is not a fish weight that can be lifted by the line.

When should I rebuild the trace?

After cuts, rough spots, flattening or damage beside an eye or connection. Remove the damaged section and test the replacement end fitting.
