SaBoFlex Bee Larvae is a concentrated pigment paste for colouring plastisol when making soft-plastic fishing lures. It produces a muted creamy-yellow shade with a subtle olive cast and is a good choice when you want a softer, more natural base instead of a clean, high-visibility yellow. This is a colour concentrate designed to be mixed into plastisol – not ready-to-use plastisol, an airbrush paint or a surface coating.
The name Bee Larvae refers to its pale larval colour character. In the workshop, the shade lends itself to larvae, worms and other small aquatic or terrestrial insect patterns, a light lure belly or a calmer layer in a laminate with a darker back. The concentrate in the bottle is not an exact colour sample of the finished lure. The result also depends on the colour dose, the base plastisol, the thickness of the casting, other additives and the lighting conditions.
Bee Larvae is not the same as a clean Standard Yellow, a high-visibility Fluo Yellow or Chartreuse, or a metallic or pearlescent colour. It contains no metallic nano-glitter and is neither UV-active nor fluorescent. Without a product-specific technical data sheet, we also do not assign it a particular level of opacity or transparency. A cooled test sample made with your own plastisol is always the most reliable reference.
For this colour, SAF recommends adding small amounts to plastisol that is already hot and clear. Colour intensity is difficult to judge in a cold, milky-looking base. Once the plastisol has reached its clear working state, you can see the change after each addition and build the shade gradually. Always prepare the plastisol according to its manufacturer's temperature and safety instructions and do not overheat it.
We do not specify a fixed number of drops per 100 g. Drop size varies with the dispensing nozzle, while the finished shade also depends on the particular plastisol and the thickness of the lure. Start with a small amount: a light mixture can be intensified, but colour concentrate that has already been added cannot be removed. For repeatable results, record the weight of plastisol, the colour dose and all other additives used.
Mix the colour first, then dose it
SAF workshop tip for easier homogenisation: we recommend placing 2 clean, completely dry stainless-steel mixing balls in the 50 g bottle and 2–3 in the 250 g bottle. They help redistribute settled pigment more quickly and make the paste uniform before dosing. Do not use lead balls or ordinary steel that may corrode. Mixing balls are not included with the colour.
- Stir the base plastisol thoroughly from the bottom, then heat it to the clear working state specified by its manufacturer; do not overheat it.
- Shake or stir Bee Larvae thoroughly before dosing so that the paste has a uniform colour and consistency throughout the bottle, with no settled layer remaining at the bottom.
- Add a small amount of colour to the hot plastisol, then stir the mixture slowly but thoroughly.
- Check the shade on a thin, cooled drop or a test casting. Build up the intensity gradually with further small additions.
- Add glitter and other visual-effect additives only after establishing the base shade. Record the proven ratio so that you can reproduce it in the next batch.
Used on its own, Bee Larvae is suitable for subtle larval and creamy colour patterns. In a laminated lure, it can form a light belly beneath a darker brown, olive, green or black back. It can also be used as a soft transition between stronger layers. Suitable heat-resistant gold, copper or silver glitter can change the overall character further, but test every new combination in a small trial batch first.
The 50 g option is practical for trying the shade for the first time, making smaller batches or equipping a workshop that uses several colours. The 250 g bottle makes more sense for regular production or repeated use of the same recipe, offers better value per gram and is easier to homogenise by shaking because of the greater mass of its contents. The concentration and the plastisol-colouring method remain the same for both pack sizes.
Storage and packaging appearance
The pigment paste and base plastisol are not the same material and should not be treated identically in storage. In SAF workshop experience, Bee Larvae remains easier to work with in cooler conditions than plastisol itself, but the manufacturer does not publish an exact minimum storage temperature. The colour should therefore not be regarded as frost-resistant. Store it upright, tightly closed and dry at a stable room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat sources and frost. If the sealed bottle has become cold, allow it to return naturally to room temperature before opening, then shake it thoroughly. Do not warm it on a radiator, hot plate or in a microwave oven.
Packaging notice: Especially after transport, a light oily film may appear around the thread or leave a mark on the label, even when the bottle is closed. If there is no visible loss of contents, this surface trace does not affect the use of the colour; we apologise for any marking of the label. After dosing, wipe the bottle neck and thread, retighten the cap firmly and store the bottle upright, ideally in a washable tray or sealed bag.
Working safely with hot plastisol
- Hot plastisol can cause severe burns. Wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, clothing that covers your arms and legs, and closed footwear.
- Work on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Ensure effective ventilation, ideally with local exhaust ventilation directly at the source. Follow the safety and temperature instructions provided by the plastisol manufacturer and do not overheat the mixture.
- If the safety data sheet for the plastisol being used, or an assessment of the working conditions, requires respiratory protection, select a mask and filter suitable for the specific substances and conditions. An ordinary particulate dust mask may not protect against gases and vapours.
- The container, dispensing nozzle and mixing tools must be clean and completely dry. Prevent water and other unsuitable liquids from coming into contact with hot plastisol.
- Close the bottle tightly after use, keep it out of reach of children and follow the current product label and safety data sheet.
