Cheburashka and screw-in jig head molds allow you to produce weights for modern fishing with soft plastic lures. This category includes two different construction types: articulated Cheburashka weights, where the sinker is connected separately to the hook, and screw-in or spring-mounted heads that attach directly to the body of a soft plastic lure. Although they may have similar shapes and weights, their rigging methods and applications are not the same.

The main advantage of a classic Cheburashka is the articulated connection between the weight and the hook. Unlike a conventional jig head, the hook is not permanently cast into the lead. The articulated connection allows the lure to move more freely relative to the weight and, depending on the clip design, also allows the hook or weight to be changed without replacing the entire jig head.

Screw-in and spring-mounted heads use a metal spring or another dedicated holder that is secured inside the front section of the soft plastic lure. The hook can be positioned separately on a leader or stinger rig. This approach is particularly useful when you do not want a long conventional jig-hook shank running through the body of the soft bait.

Round Cheburashka – versatile articulated weights for spinning.

Olive Cheburashka – elongated shape and different weight balance.

Fish-shaped heads – profiled weights for soft plastic lures.

Screw-in jig heads – spring-mounted weights for soft baits.

Clips and guide inserts – components for Cheburashka casting.

Choose Cheburashka weight according to depth, current, rate of fall and the required presentation. A lighter weight allows a slower presentation and more delicate lure control, while deeper water or stronger current may require significantly more weight. The aim is to maintain control of the lure without unnecessarily overloading the complete rig.

One of the advantages of a separate Cheburashka weight is the ability to combine the same suitable soft plastic lure and hook with different casting weights. With rigs using an interchangeable clip, you can change the weight according to the clip construction without altering the actual lure rigging. Always check that the clip is properly secured and that its wire is undamaged after changing components.

Weight shape influences mass distribution, resistance during the fall and bottom contact. A round Cheburashka is a versatile solution, while elongated olive-shaped or profiled fish-head designs allow rigs with different proportions and balance. However, no single shape can be assumed to resist snagging or perform better in every current. The result depends on the complete rig and the actual bottom conditions.

With classic Cheburashka molds, the correct combination of mold, metal guide insert and stainless steel clip is essential. The guide insert creates the required passage for the connecting component during casting, while the clip provides the functional connection between the finished weight, hook and leader. The metal guide insert is not automatically a permanent part of the finished rig.

SAF offers Your Mold Cheburashka clips A, B and C for different casting-weight ranges. Type A is intended for lighter weights of 2–10 g, B for 12–30 g and C for 30–80 g. Use these ranges as a selection guide rather than as a substitute for verifying the specific mold and the actual dimensions of the opening in the finished casting.

Metal guide inserts also differ in dimensions. For example, mold F161 for 2–16 g Cheburashka weights uses a 0.6 mm guide, while some multi-cavity molds require both 0.6 and 1.2 mm guides depending on casting size. The exact requirement may therefore differ not only between molds but also between individual cavities in the same mold.

A mold's overall weight range does not mean that all its cavities use identical accessories. With the profiled F183 Cheburashka mold, for example, the lighter 11–18 g cavities use a 0.6 mm guide, while the 20–31 g cavities require a 1.2 mm guide. Always verify the specification of the exact cavity before starting a larger casting batch.

When choosing a mold, also check the number of castings and the available weight distribution. Molds such as F161 and F173 cover common Cheburashka weight ranges, while F178 and F179 allow considerably heavier weights to be produced. From a workshop perspective, it is usually more useful to choose a mold covering your most frequently used weights rather than automatically selecting the widest available range.

For screw-in jig heads, the selection process is different. The important factors are spring construction, spring dimensions, anchoring inside the casting and the size of the soft plastic lure. The spring must be securely fixed inside the head and hold the lure without excessively damaging its body. An oversized or incorrectly positioned holder may tear the soft plastic or restrict its action.

Screw-in systems are particularly practical for larger shads, minnows and other soft plastic lures that use separate hook rigging. When assembling the rig, always check stinger position, leader length and the lure's ability to move naturally. Spring retention alone does not replace secure and correctly positioned hooks.

An articulated Cheburashka can be combined with a suitable single hook, offset hook or another compatible hook arrangement, depending on lure size and clip construction. Offset hooks can be useful when presenting soft baits around underwater obstacles, but using a Cheburashka weight does not automatically make the rig snag-free.

Numerical hook size is not directly determined by Cheburashka weight. The hook must primarily match the lure, available hook-gap clearance and intended rigging method. At the same time, its eye must work correctly with the connecting clip. Excessively heavy wire or unsuitable eye dimensions may prevent the rig from being assembled securely.

Before casting, check that the mold is clean and in good condition, prepare the correct guide insert and verify its position. Both mold halves must close completely without resistance. If the manufacturer recommends treating the guide with a suitable release agent, use only a product intended for that application and follow the relevant safety instructions.

Once the casting has cooled, remove the guide insert, trim any excess lead and inspect the resulting passage. The clip must fit, open and lock correctly without force or deformation. With screw-in jig heads, also check that the spring is securely anchored and correctly aligned with the weight body.

Cheburashka weights and screw-in heads can be finished with suitable powder paint or rubberised coating, depending on the individual product. Follow the recommended application and curing procedure. The coating must not block the clip opening or the functional part of the spring. The finished surface must be completely cooled and ready for use before final assembly.

When working with lead or another compatible low-melting metal, wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, long clothing and closed footwear. Work on a stable, heat-resistant surface with effective ventilation. The mold, guide inserts, springs and all other components must be clean and completely dry before coming into contact with molten metal.

Never pour molten metal into a wet mold or onto damp components. Keep water, drinks and ordinary household utensils away from the casting area. Do not eat, drink or smoke while working, wash your hands thoroughly afterwards and follow the instructions supplied with the mold, metal and melting equipment.

If you want to change weight without permanently casting the hook into lead, choose a classic Cheburashka with the appropriate connecting clip. If you need to attach the weight directly to a soft plastic lure and use separate hook rigging, consider a screw-in or spring-mounted head. For rigs with a hook permanently cast into the head, explore conventional jig head molds.

Frequently asked questions – Cheburashka and screw-in jig heads

What is the difference between a Cheburashka and a conventional jig head?

With a conventional jig head, the hook is permanently cast into the metal body. A Cheburashka is a separate weight connected to the hook using a clip or another articulated connection, allowing greater freedom of movement.

What is the difference between a Cheburashka and a screw-in jig head?

A Cheburashka is an articulated weight connected to a hook. A screw-in jig head uses a spring or another holder secured directly inside the soft plastic lure and can be combined with separate stinger hooks.

How do I choose the correct Cheburashka weight?

Choose according to depth, current, rate of fall and the required presentation. Use the lightest weight that still allows you to maintain reliable control of the lure.

What is the difference between Cheburashka clips A, B and C?

Your Mold clips A, B and C are designed for different weight ranges. A covers 2–10 g, B 12–30 g and C 30–80 g. Always verify compatibility with the exact mold.

What is a metal guide insert used for?

The guide insert creates the passage required for the connecting clip during casting. It is removed after the casting has cooled. Its dimensions must match the specific mold and cavity.

Can I use the same guide insert in every Cheburashka mold?

No. Different molds require different guide dimensions. With some multi-cavity molds, the required size may also vary according to casting weight.

Which hooks can be used with a Cheburashka?

Depending on clip construction and lure type, suitable single or offset hooks can be used. Always check hook-eye dimensions, wire diameter and the security of the connection.

Is a Cheburashka suitable for fishing around underwater obstacles?

It can be, particularly when combined with a suitable offset hook. However, the articulated weight alone does not guarantee that the rig will be snag-free.

Are clips and guide inserts included with every mold?

Not automatically. Always check the package contents of the specific product. Some molds may include guide inserts, while additional connecting components must be ordered separately.

How should I inspect a finished Cheburashka weight?

After cooling, check the surface, clip passage, removal of excess lead and correct locking of the connecting component. The finished rig must allow the hook to move freely without the clip opening unintentionally.

How can I cast Cheburashka and screw-in jig heads safely?

Wear safety glasses, suitable gloves and work with effective ventilation. The mold, guide inserts and all inserted components must be completely dry. Follow the instructions supplied with the mold and melting equipment.
