Platil Marine 0.80 mm / 36.5 kg, 100 m is designed for robust cod rigs and the transition to natural baits. Choose this stiffer rig monofilament with eye size and the required bait movement in mind. Alongside larger tube-eel rigs, it suits fish-bait traces that do not require the heaviest diameters in the range. Choose the end fitting for knot seating and eye size; a suitable crimped connection is an option for a compact heavy-duty end.

Detailed information

Product detailed description

Platil Marine 0.80 mm suits more substantial homemade cod rigs and traces requiring a firm body. Its stiffness takes it beyond the idea of a soft all-purpose leader. Alongside larger tube-eel setups, it can serve in fish-bait traces where the design does not yet call for the heaviest diameters in the range.

Firmer, stiffer rig monofilament needs to be chosen around the way the trace is built. In SAF practice, Platil handles differently from soft Regenerator, becoming almost wire-like in the heavier versions. Stiffness can help a body retain its shape while increasing the demands on eye size and connections. The 100 m pack supplies spare rigs and replacement sections for later trips.

SAF recommendation: Robust cod rigs and the transition to natural baits. On a bulky setup, check clearance through the hardware and the radius of the end loop. A sharp bend will not force stiff line into a good connection. Use a tied connection where the knot seats correctly, or consider properly matched crimps for a compact end fitting. Branch length and hook weight matter just as much to bait movement.

Neighbouring diameters and rig choice. Consider Platil 0.70 mm for easier handling in a tied rig. The 0.90 mm version moves more clearly towards heavy natural-bait traces and larger baits, so do not transfer the same tube-eel recommendation automatically to it.

Distinguish a terminal leader for a single lure from the body of a multi-hook system. The first allows lure movement; the second carries several branches and keeps baits sensibly separated. They are different jobs, and one diameter need not be ideal for both. Test a homemade rig with the actual hooks, baits and lower sinker rather than judging a bare piece of line on the workbench.

Choose the end connection for the actual eye and the material’s behaviour in it. A knot must seat cleanly without forced bending or surface damage. For a more compact end loop, or where thick material deforms poorly in a knot, use a tested crimped design. Match sleeve, tool and procedure to the actual diameter; a similar sleeve label does not guarantee a suitable bore. Test each new connection under controlled tension.

Do not convert the 36.5 kg label figure into a fish weight you can lift by the trace. Connections, hardware and wear affect the completed rig. Inspect the terminal section and areas beside eyes after bottom or fish contact. Cut away damaged line, rinse used sea rigs in fresh water and let them dry. Keep spare material away from heat and direct sunlight. Abrasion resistance is not guaranteed bite protection; choose an appropriate terminal material when sharp teeth require it.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

When should I choose Platil Marine 0.80 mm?

Robust cod rigs and the transition to natural baits.

Can it be the body of a cod tube-eel rig?

It can form part of a suitably designed homemade rig. Assess body and branches separately, and check hook reach with the actual baits fitted.

Should I tie or crimp this diameter?

Use a tied connection where the knot seats cleanly without damage. Consider a correctly matched crimped loop for a compact heavy-duty end fitting.

Why not choose Platil solely by another brand’s diameter?

In SAF practice Platil has a firmer construction and its heavier diameters serve distinctly heavy-duty roles. Equal diameter does not mean equal suppleness, eye size or end connection.

Does 36.5 kg describe the strength of the complete rig?

No. It is a declared material figure; connections, components and wear affect the finished rig. It is not a fish weight that can be lifted by the line.

When should I rebuild the trace?

After cuts, rough spots, flattening or damage beside an eye or connection. Remove the damaged section and test the replacement end fitting.
