Size 2/0 offers several options for homemade jigs: a lighter head for a slower presentation or a fish-shaped head for an active paddle-tail retrieve. For perch and zander, choose it when a 1/0 point emerges too far forward or leaves too little clearance above the rigged lure.
The dimension image shows an overall length of approximately 39 mm. The increase over 1/0 is relatively small, allowing you to adjust the rig without an unnecessarily long shank extending into the rear of the lure. A relatively large hook can be used with a light head when the mould supports it.
VMC 5150 construction
The 5150 Barbarian Large Eye Jig 90° model uses high-carbon steel (Hi-Carbon Steel) and a Needle Cone point. Its construction differs from the 7161 and 6198 ranges. Their point designations and recommended mould pairings do not automatically apply to the 5150.
The angular Barbarian bend creates the distinctive lower section of the hook, which the manufacturer calls the Technical Locking Curve. After rigging, there must be sufficient clearance between the shank and point. With a deep-bodied paddle tail, also assess body depth. With a slim soft jerkbait, pay particular attention to where the point emerges and whether the rear section remains free to move.
Compatible moulds for VMC 5150 BN 2/0
The listed weights refer to lead castings. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, the recommendations apply to the mould as a whole and do not mean that every hook fits every cavity. Before casting, check that the specific hook is seated correctly and the mould closes fully.
The 90° front bend determines the hook placement and the position of the eye in the head. The angle alone does not determine the lure’s position in the water. Head shape and centre of gravity, lure resistance, current and direction of pull also matter. The large eye makes threading the leader and tying knots easier. After finishing the head, check that no metal or paint remains in the eye.
BN stands for the Black Nickel finish
BN denotes the Black Nickel finish. The VMC 5150 RD range is the red alternative with the same construction. Where the required size is available in both finishes, always compare the same size. The finish helps you match the appearance of the rig, but does not by itself guarantee more bites or compatibility with any mould. The VMC 7161 BN and VMC 6198 TI ranges use a different layout with a 60° bend. Check their use against the mould specification.
Making your own jig heads lets you prepare several weights for the same lure. The hook determines how the lure is rigged; the head weight determines how it can be presented. As the current increases, add only enough weight to maintain the intended path and contact. In midwater, a slower fall may keep the soft plastic at the level of the fish for longer. Weight therefore cannot be reliably matched to depth alone.
Before casting a larger batch, place the hook in a dry mould and check that it closes fully. After making the first head, check that the hook is securely anchored, the eye is clear and the lure sits straight. The hook is not intended to be reshaped to compensate for an unsuitable hook recess. Follow the instructions for the mould, casting metal and melting equipment.
After contact with rocks, check the point and look for any opening of the bend. After saltwater use, rinse the rig with fresh water and let it dry. When playing a fish, the hook works together with the rod, drag and leader. The numerical hook size alone does not specify a guaranteed load capacity.
Frequently asked questions about VMC 5150 BN 2/0
Does 2/0 make sense on a light jig head?
Yes, if the mould supports it. F135 is one example. The hook determines how the lure is rigged, while head weight determines the fall rate and control of the rig.
What does the large eye offer?
It makes threading the leader and tying knots easier. The eye must remain clean and open after casting and painting. Eye size alone does not indicate hook strength.
Does the 90° bend guarantee a horizontal lure position?
No. The angle describes the front bend of the hook. The actual position in the water also depends on the head shape and centre of gravity, lure rigging, direction of pull and current.
Can I choose the same design with a red finish?
Yes. For sizes available in both finishes, compare the corresponding VMC 5150 RD. It is the same 5150 construction with a red finish. Check mould compatibility again when switching to a different hook model.
How do I recognise a correctly rigged lure?
The soft plastic sits straight behind the head, the point emerges through the solid part of the body and the gape remains clear. The tail and other active parts of the lure should be free to move.
