Product detailed description

SaBoFlex Motor Oil Brown is a concentrated pigment paste for colouring plastisol when making soft-plastic fishing lures. It is designed to produce a warm amber-brown to smoky-brown shade from the Motor Oil colour family. This is a colour concentrate intended to be mixed into base plastisol – not ready-to-use plastisol, actual motor oil, an airbrush paint or a surface coating.

Motor Oil Brown emphasises the brown and amber side of this colour family used in lure making. Depending on the dose, base plastisol, thickness and lighting, a cooled sample may range in appearance from a lighter amber-brown to a deeper smoky-brown tone with an olive undertone. The photograph of the brown concentrate helps distinguish this version, but is not a substitute for a sample of the finished lure.

Motor Oil Brown is not the same as Motor Oil Green, Green Pumpkin, Transparent RootBeer or an ordinary brown colour. The Motor Oil name alone does not confirm a colour shift, dichroic effect or any particular transparency. Without a technical data sheet, we also make no claim regarding UV activity, fluorescence, opacity, a metallic or pearlescent effect, or migration behaviour.

For this pigment paste, SAF recommends adding it in small amounts to plastisol that is already hot and clear. It is difficult to judge the true intensity in a cold, milky-looking base; in clear working plastisol, you can see the change in shade after each addition. Prepare the base according to its manufacturer's temperature and safety instructions and do not overheat it.

We do not specify a fixed number of drops per 100 g. Drop size depends on the dispensing nozzle, while the appearance varies with the plastisol used, casting thickness, other additives and lighting. Start with a small amount: a mixture lacking intensity can be coloured further, but concentrate that has already been added cannot be removed. For repeatability, record the weight of the plastisol, the colour dose and all additives used.

Homogenise first, then build the shade

SAF workshop tip for easier homogenisation: we recommend placing 2 clean, completely dry stainless-steel mixing balls in the 50 g bottle and 2–3 in the 250 g bottle. They help redistribute settled pigment evenly before dosing. Do not use lead balls or ordinary steel that may corrode. Mixing balls are not included with the colour.

  1. Stir the base plastisol thoroughly from the bottom, then heat it to the clear working state specified by its manufacturer; do not overheat it.
  2. Shake or stir Motor Oil Brown thoroughly before dosing so that the paste has a uniform colour and consistency throughout the bottle, with no settled layer remaining at the bottom.
  3. Add a small amount of colour to the hot plastisol, then stir the mixture slowly but thoroughly.
  4. Check the shade on a thin, cooled drop or a test casting. Increase the intensity gradually with further small additions.
  5. Add glitter and other visual-effect additives only after establishing the base shade. Record the proven ratio so that you can reproduce it in future batches.

Complete soft bait making range and workshop guide

Motor Oil Brown can be used for the complete body, belly or flank, or as a warm brown layer in a laminate with a green-olive, dark-brown, smoke-coloured or pearlescent back. The appearance can be complemented with suitable heat-resistant gold, copper, black or red glitter. These are workshop composition options, not claims about visibility or effectiveness in water.

The 50 g option is practical for trying the shade for the first time, making smaller batches or equipping a workshop that uses a broader palette of colours. The 250 g bottle makes more sense for regular production or repeated use of the same recipe, offers better value per gram and is easier to homogenise by shaking because of the greater mass of its contents. The concentration and method of use remain the same for both pack sizes.

Storage and packaging appearance

Store the colour upright in its original tightly closed bottle, in a dry place at a stable room temperature and away from direct sunlight, heat sources and frost. The manufacturer does not publish an exact storage range or frost-resistance specification. If the sealed bottle has become cold, allow it to return naturally to room temperature before homogenising it. Do not warm it on a radiator, hot plate or in a microwave oven.

Packaging notice: Especially after transport, a light oily film may appear around the thread or leave a mark on the label, even when the bottle is closed. If there is no visible loss of contents, this surface trace does not affect the use of the colour; we apologise for any marking of the label. After dosing, wipe the bottle neck and thread, retighten the cap firmly and store the bottle upright, ideally in a washable tray or sealed bag.

Working safely with hot plastisol

  • Hot plastisol can cause severe burns. Wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, clothing that covers your arms and legs, and closed footwear.
  • Work on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Ensure effective ventilation, ideally with local extraction of vapours directly at the source. Follow the safety and temperature instructions provided by the plastisol manufacturer and do not overheat the mixture.
  • If the safety data sheet for the plastisol being used, or an assessment of the working conditions, requires respiratory protection, select a mask and filter suitable for the specific substances and conditions. An ordinary particulate dust mask may not protect against gases and vapours.
  • The container, dispensing nozzle and mixing tools must be clean and completely dry. Prevent water and other unsuitable liquids from coming into contact with hot plastisol.
  • Close the bottle tightly after use, keep it out of reach of children and follow the current product label and safety data sheet.

Frequently asked questions about SaBoFlex Motor Oil Brown

What shade does Motor Oil Brown describe?

It is a warm amber-brown to smoky-brown version of the Motor Oil colour family used in lure making and may have an olive undertone depending on the dose and plastisol. It is not a standardised numerical colour; a cooled test casting is the decisive reference.

How does it differ from Motor Oil Green?

Motor Oil Brown emphasises the warm brown and amber components, while Motor Oil Green is based on green and olive tones. The precise difference can be compared only using samples made from the same plastisol, at the same dose and in a similar thickness.

Does Motor Oil mean that actual motor oil is added to the mixture?

No. Motor Oil is only the commercial name of a colour family. Do not add automotive oil or other unapproved liquids to plastisol; use only additives specified by the manufacturer for the particular plastisol system.

Is Motor Oil Brown transparent or does it change colour?

The Motor Oil name alone does not guarantee transparency, a colour shift or a dichroic effect. Without a technical data sheet, we also cannot confirm a particular opacity, UV activity, fluorescence or metallic effect. Verify the required appearance on a cooled sample.

How can I use the shade in a multicoloured casting?

It can be used for an amber-brown belly or flank and paired with a green-olive, dark-brown, smoke-coloured or pearlescent back. Test each layer separately first, then assess the resulting boundary on a casting of the intended thickness.

Can Motor Oil Brown be mixed with another liquid colour?

Yes, provided both concentrates are designed for the same plastisol system, but without technical data sheets we cannot guarantee universal compatibility across all brands and ranges. Begin with a small test, record the ratios precisely and assess the result only after the full heat cycle.
