Product detailed description
SaBoFlex Transparent Olive is a concentrated pigment paste for colouring plastisol when making soft-plastic fishing lures. It belongs to the transparent range and is intended to give the entire casting or selected layers a translucent colour. This is a colour concentrate designed to be mixed into plastisol – not ready-to-use plastisol, airbrush paint or a surface coating.
The name Transparent Olive denotes the transparent olive-green range. In the current product photographs, the concentrate appears medium green with a warmer yellow-green to olive character. In clear plastisol, a low dosage may look lighter, while a thicker layer or higher concentration may look darker; the cooled sample is what matters.
Transparent Olive is not the same as a dark, cool green or a vivid fluorescent yellow-green. The name alone does not indicate UV activity, fluorescence, pearlescence, a metallic effect or a precise level of opacity. The olive character may also shift more towards green or yellow-green depending on the base plastisol and lighting.
For this colour, SAF recommends adding it in small increments to plastisol that is already hot and clear. It is difficult to assess the true intensity in a cold, milky-cloudy base. Once mixed into clear plastisol at working temperature, you can see the shade change as you work and increase the saturation in small steps. Always prepare plastisol in accordance with its manufacturer's temperature and safety instructions, and do not overheat it.
We do not specify a fixed number of drops per 100 g. Drop size varies with the dispensing nozzle, while the finished appearance depends on the base plastisol, dosage, lure thickness, other additives and lighting. Start with a small amount; you can add more colour to a mixture that is too pale, but you cannot remove concentrate once it has been added. For repeatable production, record the amount of plastisol, colour dosage and additives used.
Mix the colour first, then dispense
SAF tip for easier homogenisation: we recommend placing 2 clean, completely dry stainless-steel mixing balls in the 50 g pack and 2–3 in the 250 g bottle. They help disperse settled pigment more quickly and homogenise the paste before dispensing. Do not use lead balls or ordinary steel that is prone to corrosion. Mixing balls are not included with the colour.
- Thoroughly stir the base plastisol from the bottom and heat it to a clear working state in accordance with its manufacturer's instructions; do not overheat it.
- Thoroughly shake or stir Transparent Olive before dispensing so that the paste has an even colour and consistency throughout the pack, with no settled layer at the bottom.
- Add a small amount of colour to the hot plastisol first, then stir the mixture slowly but thoroughly.
- Check the shade in a thin, cooled drop or test casting. Increase the intensity gradually with further small additions.
- Add glitter and other visual additives only after mixing the base shade. Record a proven ratio for future batches.
A lower dosage suits a lightly olive, translucent body, flank or belly; a higher intensity suits a warm green back, lateral band or one laminate layer. For a graduated pattern, use a clear, cream, pearlescent or darker green neighbouring layer. Add suitable high-temperature gold, copper, green or holographic glitter only after confirming the base shade on its own.
The 50 g option is practical for trying the shade for the first time, making smaller batches and keeping a broader colour palette in the workshop. The 250 g pack makes more sense for regular production or repeatedly making the same recipe, and offers better value per gram. Pack size does not change the concentration or method of use.
Storage and packaging appearance
The manufacturer's exact storage range is not stated in the available documentation. Store the colour upright in its original, tightly closed bottle, in a dry place at a stable room temperature and away from direct sunlight, heat sources and frost. Before opening a chilled, sealed bottle, allow it to return naturally to room temperature, then homogenise the contents thoroughly. Do not warm it on a radiator or hotplate, or in a microwave.
Packaging note: With concentrated pigment paste, a light oily film may appear around the thread or a mark may appear on the label, particularly after transport and even when the bottle is sealed. Provided there is no evident loss of contents, this surface trace does not affect use of the colour; we apologise if the label has been affected. After dispensing, wipe the neck and thread, retighten the cap firmly and store the bottle upright, ideally in a washable tray or resealable bag.
Working safely with hot plastisol
- Hot plastisol can cause severe burns. Wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, long clothing and closed footwear.
- Work on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Ensure effective ventilation, ideally local extraction of vapours directly at the source. Follow the safety and temperature instructions from the manufacturer of the plastisol being used, and do not overheat the mixture.
- If the safety data sheet for the plastisol being used or an assessment of working conditions requires respiratory protection, select a mask and filter suited to the specific substances and conditions. An ordinary particulate dust respirator may not protect against gases and vapours.
- The container, dispensing nozzle and mixing tools must be clean and completely dry. Prevent water and other unsuitable liquids from coming into contact with hot plastisol.
- Close the colour firmly after use, keep it out of reach of children and follow the current product label and safety data sheet.
Frequently asked questions about SaBoFlex Transparent Olive
How does Transparent Olive differ from Dark Green?
Judging by the name and photographs of the concentrate, Olive appears warmer, lighter and more yellow-green, while Dark Green tends towards a deeper, cool green. Confirm the difference using cooled samples made with the same plastisol and at the same thickness.
Is Olive the same as fluorescent chartreuse?
No. Olive denotes a transparent olive-green shade, while chartreuse and fluo are separate colour or effect designations. The available documentation does not substantiate fluorescent or UV properties for Transparent Olive.
Can Olive produce a very subtle green belly?
Yes. For a subtle tint, start with the smallest possible addition and allow the sample to cool completely. A thin belly will generally look lighter than a thick body made from the same mixture, so test a representative geometry.
Why does the olive tone sometimes look more yellow and sometimes greener?
Perception is affected by the light source, the colour of surrounding layers, the base plastisol, dosage and thickness. View the sample in daylight and workshop lighting, and against neutral white and grey backgrounds.
Where does Olive show most clearly in a laminated casting?
As a separate flank, back or translucent base body next to a neutral pale layer. If it adjoins a very dark colour, the difference may diminish in a thick section; a small test laminate will show the true contrast.
How can I keep glitter visible in an olive base?
Start with a lower colour concentration and check the sample at the actual lure thickness. Once the shade has been confirmed, add a small amount of temperature-suitable glitter; too much pigment or too many particles may make the finished appearance denser.
