SaBoFlex Transparent RootBeer – Plastisol Liquid Colour
Code: HA2149-050Related products
Product detailed description
SaBoFlex Transparent RootBeer is a concentrated liquid pigment paste for colouring plastisol when making soft-plastic fishing lures. It creates a translucent warm shade in the amber-brown to dark resinous part of the palette. This is a colour concentrate designed to be mixed into plastisol – not ready-to-use plastisol, airbrush paint, a surface coating or a flavouring.
The amber-brown RootBeer shade
RootBeer is an established industry name for translucent brown colouring with a warm amber undertone. The current SaBoFlex photograph shows a deep brown concentrate that may appear almost opaque in the bottle. Once mixed into plastisol, the finished hue and translucency are governed by dosage and lure thickness, so the cooled sample is what matters.
The term Transparent means that the colour is intended to produce translucent colouring. It does not mean a colourless result, nor does it indicate fluorescence, UV activity, a metallic effect or non-migrating properties. RootBeer is only the name of the colour shade; without supporting documentation, we do not attribute any scent or taste to the product.
How to use Transparent RootBeer in a lure
RootBeer can be used for an entire translucent brown body, a darker back or flank, or one layer of an earthy laminate. As workshop trials, combine it with amber orange, Gourd, olive, smoke, black or a pale belly layer. The base can be complemented with separate high-temperature gold, copper, black or orange glitter. These are workshop appearance combinations, not a guarantee of effectiveness on fish.
Adding colour to hot plastisol
For this range, SAF recommends adding the colour in small increments to plastisol that is already hot and at a clear working state. It is difficult to assess the true intensity in a cold, milky-cloudy base; in the clear, hot mixture, you can see the change after each addition. Always prepare plastisol in accordance with its manufacturer's temperature and safety instructions, and do not overheat it.
We do not specify a fixed number of drops per 100 g or a single universal working temperature. The result is affected by the dispensing nozzle, base plastisol, lure thickness, other additives and lighting. Start with a small amount, check a thin, cooled drop or test casting, and keep a record of the recipe.
Mix the colour first, then dispense
SAF tip for easier homogenisation: we recommend placing 2 clean, completely dry stainless-steel mixing balls in the 50 g pack and 2–3 in the 250 g bottle. They help redistribute settled paste evenly before dispensing. Do not use lead balls or ordinary steel that is prone to corrosion. Mixing balls are not included with the colour.
- Thoroughly stir the base plastisol from the bottom and heat it to a clear working state in accordance with its manufacturer's instructions; do not overheat it.
- Thoroughly shake or stir Transparent RootBeer before dispensing so that the paste is homogeneous throughout the pack.
- Add a small amount of colour to the hot plastisol first, then stir the mixture slowly but thoroughly.
- Check the shade in a thin, cooled drop or test casting. Increase the intensity with further small additions.
- Add glitter and other visual additives only after mixing the base shade. Record a proven ratio.
Choosing a pack size
The 50 g pack is practical for trying RootBeer for the first time, making small batches and comparing different dosages. The 250 g option makes sense for regular use or repeatedly making the same recipe. Pack size does not change the dosing method or the need to homogenise the paste thoroughly before use.
Storage and packaging appearance
Store the bottle upright in its original, tightly closed container, in a dry place at a stable room temperature. Protect it from direct sunlight, heat sources, frost and substantial temperature fluctuations. Allow a chilled, sealed bottle to return naturally to room temperature, and only then homogenise the contents. Do not warm it on a radiator or hotplate, or in a microwave.
Packaging note: With concentrated pigment paste, a light oily film may appear around the thread or a mark may appear on the label, particularly after transport and even when the bottle is sealed. Provided there is no evident loss of contents, this surface trace does not affect use of the colour; we apologise if the label has been affected. After dispensing, wipe the neck and thread, retighten the cap firmly and store the bottle upright, ideally in a washable tray or resealable bag.
Working safely with hot plastisol
- Hot plastisol can cause severe burns. Wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, long clothing and closed footwear.
- Work on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Ensure effective ventilation, ideally local extraction of vapours directly at the source. Follow the plastisol manufacturer's safety and temperature instructions, and do not overheat the mixture.
- If the plastisol safety data sheet or an assessment of working conditions requires respiratory protection, select a mask and filter suited to the specific substances and conditions. An ordinary particulate dust respirator may not protect against gases and vapours.
- The container, dispensing nozzle and mixing tools must be clean and completely dry. Prevent water and other unsuitable liquids from coming into contact with hot plastisol.
- Close the colour firmly after use, keep it out of reach of children and follow the current product label and safety data sheet.
Frequently asked questions about SaBoFlex Transparent RootBeer
What colour does RootBeer denote?
In colours for soft baits, it is a warm, translucent brown shade with an amber undertone. It is not a precise food colour or a universal recipe across brands; the SaBoFlex sample in your plastisol is what matters.
Does the name RootBeer mean that the colour contains a scent?
No. RootBeer is the name of the shade here. The available documentation does not state any scent, flavour or attractant, so we do not attribute any of these properties to the product.
Why does RootBeer look very dark in the bottle?
It is a concentrated paste viewed in a thick layer. After a small addition to plastisol and in a thin casting, the result may be considerably lighter and more translucent. Always determine the intensity from a cooled sample.
How does RootBeer differ from Transparent Amber?
RootBeer tends towards a deeper amber-brown, while Amber tends towards a brighter orange-amber. The same dosage may not produce the same saturation, so compare the shades in the same plastisol and at the same casting thickness.
Can RootBeer be used for the whole body?
Yes. It can also be cast as a darker back, flank layer or part of a laminate with a paler belly. Test a new layout with a small batch first and assess it only after it has cooled.
Which glitter can be trialled with RootBeer?
Gold, copper or orange complement the warm palette, while black glitter provides a darker contrast. Use only a type suitable for plastisol processing temperatures, and add it only after mixing the base shade.
