SaBoFlex Transparent Appleseed – Plastisol Liquid Colour

Product detailed description
SaBoFlex Transparent Appleseed is a concentrated pigment paste for colouring plastisol when making soft-plastic fishing lures. It belongs to the transparent range and is used to give an entire cast or selected layers a translucent tint. This is a colour concentrate designed to be mixed into plastisol – not ready-to-use plastisol, airbrush paint or a surface coating.
The name Transparent Appleseed is a trade name for the shade and, in this range, does not mean a bright apple green. In current photographs of the exact product, the concentrated paste appears warm amber to reddish-brown and sometimes tobacco-coloured. This is, however, the appearance of the concentrate in a thick layer; the finished colour in cooled plastisol must be checked in your own sample.
According to its exact name, Appleseed belongs to the transparent range, so it is intended to give a translucent tint rather than automatically create an opaque brown area. Without a calibrated colour chart, it cannot be said to match another brand's Appleseed shade or to be an exact equivalent of Amber, Root Beer or Motor Oil. The name does not confirm a UV, fluorescent, pearlescent or metallic effect.
For this colour, SAF recommends adding it a little at a time to plastisol that is already hot and clear. It is difficult to assess the true intensity in a cold, milky base. Once mixed into clear working plastisol, you can see the shade change as you work and increase the saturation in small steps. Always prepare the plastisol in accordance with its manufacturer's temperature and safety instructions, and do not overheat it.
We do not specify a fixed number of drops per 100 g. Drop size varies with the dispensing nozzle, while the base plastisol, dose, lure thickness, other additives and lighting all affect the final appearance. Start with a small amount; you can add more colour to a mixture that is too light, but you cannot remove concentrate once added. For repeatable production, record the quantity of plastisol, the amount of colour and the additives used.
Mix the colour first, then dose
SAF tip for easier homogenisation: we recommend adding 2 clean, completely dry stainless-steel mixing balls to a 50 g pack, and 2–3 to a 250 g bottle. They help disperse settled pigment more quickly and homogenise the paste before dosing. Do not use lead balls or ordinary steel that is prone to corrosion. Mixing balls are not included with the colour.
- Stir the base plastisol thoroughly from the bottom, then heat it in accordance with its manufacturer's instructions until it reaches a clear working state; do not overheat it.
- Thoroughly shake or stir Transparent Appleseed before dosing so that the paste has an even colour and consistency throughout the pack, with no settled layer at the bottom.
- Add a small amount of colour to the hot plastisol first, then stir the mixture slowly but thoroughly.
- Check the shade in a thin, cooled drop or test cast. Increase the intensity gradually with further small additions.
- Add glitter and other visual additives only after mixing the base shade. Record a successful ratio for future batches.
A low dose can give the entire body or flank a light amber-brown tint, while a higher intensity can create a warmer back, lateral stripe or separate laminate layer. For multilayer casts, the shade can be combined in the workshop with a clear, cream, pearlescent or darker brown layer. Add suitable high-temperature gold, copper, bronze or holographic glitter only after mixing the base colour itself.
The 50 g option is practical for trying the shade for the first time, making small batches and maintaining a broader workshop palette. The 250 g pack makes more sense for regular production or repeating one recipe and offers better value per gram. The concentration and method of use do not change with pack size.
Storage and packaging appearance
The precise storage range is not stated by the manufacturer in the available documentation. Store the colour upright in its original, tightly closed bottle, in a dry place at a stable room temperature and away from direct sunlight, heat sources and frost. Allow a chilled, sealed bottle to return naturally to room temperature before opening, then thoroughly homogenise the contents. Do not warm it on a radiator or hotplate, or in a microwave.
Packaging note: With a concentrated pigment paste, a light oily film around the thread or a stain on the label may appear, particularly after transport, even when the bottle is sealed. Provided there is no apparent loss of contents, this superficial trace does not affect use of the colour; we apologise if the label has been marked. After dosing, wipe the neck and thread, retighten the cap firmly and store the bottle upright, ideally in a washable tray or sealed bag.
Working safely with hot plastisol
- Hot plastisol can cause severe burns. Wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, long clothing and closed footwear.
- Work on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Ensure effective ventilation, ideally local extraction of vapours directly at the source. Follow the safety and temperature instructions provided by the manufacturer of the plastisol used, and do not overheat the mixture.
- If the safety data sheet for the plastisol used or an assessment of the working conditions requires respiratory protection, select a mask and filter suited to the specific substances and conditions. A standard particulate dust respirator may not protect against gases and vapours.
- The container, dispensing nozzle and mixing tools must be clean and completely dry. Prevent water and other unsuitable liquids from coming into contact with hot plastisol.
- Close the colour firmly after use, keep it out of reach of children, and follow the current product label and safety data sheet.
Frequently asked questions about SaBoFlex Transparent Appleseed colour
Is Transparent Appleseed green?
Current photographs of the exact concentrate show a warm amber to reddish-brown appearance, not a bright apple green. Trade names for shades are not a measurement standard, however; confirm the final tone in a cooled sample of your plastisol.
Is Appleseed the same as Amber, Root Beer or Motor Oil?
The available documentation does not confirm such a match. Different manufacturers may use these names for related but distinct colour families. Treat Transparent Appleseed as a separate shade and make a comparison sample first when trying to reproduce another brand's recipe.
When should I use Appleseed instead of an opaque brown?
Use it when you want a warm brown tint with visible depth in the material, or with glitter or an underlying layer showing through. An opaque brown is more suitable where the area should be uniform without significant light transmission.
Why does Appleseed change between a thin tail and a thick body?
A transparent colour creates a longer optical path in the thicker section, which therefore appears darker and more saturated. A thin edge may look lighter and more amber. The test cast must have a similar geometry to the planned lure.
How can I use Appleseed in a multilayer cast?
It can form a warm, translucent back, flank or entire base body beneath a lighter layer. The colours combine optically through one another, so make a small laminated sample first; separate drops placed side by side will not reliably show the final combination.
Which glitter should I try first with the warm brown tone?
Temperature-suitable gold, copper, bronze or holographic glitter are options for a workshop test. This is not a universal recipe: start with a small amount and check whether the particles remain visible at the intended colour dose and thickness.
